Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????
I don't think that they are planning to not offer formula at all, just eliminate the freebie promotions when you leave the hospital.
You can still FF while they are in the nursery if you choose to do so. That is how I am reading it.

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????
They're starting to ban the free bags that they give you, not the formula you feed the child while in the hospital.

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????
My cousin is actually working on this project as an intern in the city this summer for the Hospitals Corp. First of all it's only the city hospitals and second it's the promos they're eliminating. they can't deny the baby's nutrition but they are putting together pro BFing take home bags instead and giving out free pumps to certain indigent women, etc.

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????
I think any kind of formula ban to promote breastfeeding is WRONG. Isn't it pushed enough now anyway?
Some women don't want to. Some women can't.
I am all for a positive approach to bf'ing and having support readily available to moms. But I think it's getting a little drastic.
At least people on this website agree. Do you know I went on kellymom. com last month to refer my SIL to the website, and this same post was on there (regarding the ban in city hospitals) and most of the responses were those of APPLAUSE?? I felt very upset that women would be happy about it because they feel everyone should breastfeed. Not saying all feel that way on that site, but it sure felt like it on that thread.

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????
If you didn't read the article they are NOT banning formula in the hospitals.
The push toward breastfeeding means a ban on freebie formula when you leave the hospital.
Big deal - it lasted me 2 days.

Beth had posted a link to a NYT article about this a few months back and I had the same exact reaction as Liza. I never produced a drop of milk with either kid. I would have loved to BF but it just wasn't happening.
Plus, with Sarah the nurses were very generous and gave us a month's worth of formula when we left. I think of the people who make too much to qualify for WIC but are struggling to make ends meet living in our area and know that the free formula is a blessing to them.
ETA: Link to Beth's thread
Yeah, there was a very interesting show on NPR about this. I'm sure if you go to the website you can look it up - they debated the pros and cons of the policy.

What gets me is this - they are pushing BFing, and then flipping out if women do it in public????
Ahhhh, the hypocrisy is mind-blowing, isn't it? Damned if we do, damned if we don't

I think you should change the title of this post....according to this one news station it is NOT a ban --- unless someone else can find an article where there is?

But WHO? The city is is pushing BFing, which is great. It's not the "city" that flips out when women do it in public. Right? It's not like you get a ticket by the city if you BF in public.

I know they are only banning the promo formula but I still think it's wrong, they should give a choice of promo products!

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????
WHY IS IT THAT WOMEN ARE SUPPOSED TO BREASTFEED FOR THE ENTIRE FIRST YEAR, yet...................
- We get HORRIBLE MATERNITY LEAVE options in this country (yea if we got a year at home like the Canadians do, maybe I would be encouraged enough to have a kid attached to my boob all day but guess what I have to work full-time)
and
- Employers are STILL not as mom/pump-friendly as they should be, if at all!!!!
We have a long, long way to go folks and banning freebie formula ain't the way to get there.

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????
My grandmother couldn't BF and she had her kids during world war II Germany. They didn't have formula so a woman donated her milk. Seriously, we're not in WWII germany here.
People should do what they choose. No one to force either way - it's a mom's decision...
If "they" are going to chase any issue, it should be smoking. Fry the big fish first.

Re: Free formula not being given in some city hospitals?
I wonder which hospitals are doing this - it would be interesting to see if the participating hospitals are ones like Lenox Hill - which have a wealthier patient profile - or Elmhurst hospital, which does not.

That is what I am got out of it too. My MIL and I were discussing this exact topic this morning. When DS was born I did not get much freebie formula anyway but they should definetely continue giving it out to mothers who do not BF.

This is what I heard as well. They want to eliminate the free formula that you get in the diaper bags when you leave the hospital.
If they really want women to bf, then they should promote the things that support breastfeeding such as having more LC available in the hospital to help teach moms how to bf, getting insurance companies to cover consultations and visits to LC instead of having it be an uncovered expense. I wonder how many women were on the committee for this bill that actually bf their babies.

That's how I read it too.
I see nothing wrong with promoting breastfeeding until the mother makes the choice & then it is HER choice. I do think it's ridiculous that everyone is up on arms over banning something that is complimentary. If hospitals decided not to discontinue giving anyone diapers to take home, who am I to complain about it? I'm sure the food I ate in the hospital wasn't free.
I'm all for free stuff at the hospitals. I was given cases of the special preemie formula Joseph was on. It was a bonus - not an expectation.
What I find more disturbing is a hospital would get get $ from the formula company to promote that specific type of formula. Most people I know who did not bf, brought their child home & bought the formula the hospital started them on.
I say if they want that to give away free samples, then formula companies should be given equal access to public hospitals.
For me, I suspect it is less about promoting breastfeeding than it is about the smaller formula companies who aren't willing to kick back getting fair marketing.

This is EXACTLY what is wrong here! 6 weeks and 12 for us lucky folks is NOT enough time off if we are going to be BFing. And, two 15 minute breaks that we are allowed throughout the day. Come on, that's not enough time to extract all the milk you need. We have a worse maternity leave policy than most third world countries. Until they fixt that, they can NOT force people to BF.
I was not able to because Steven wouldn't latch and my milk never came in. So, even if he did latch, I still wouldn't have been able to.
