Do you use the tip of your finger? If so, try using the side, it hurts less.

Re: GD Girls....Official Thread Maybe??

Hey Jess even though I passed as of now who is to say when I retake it at 28 wks.. But I still want to join your board... Since I found out I was pregnant I have been on my GD diet... And as proof I passed...

Remember what some can eat others may not be able to...

Breakfast----
Try Natures own bread - wheat with fiber it has only 9grams of carbs per slice.. with 2 egss sunnyside up and cheese for breakfast...

Yogaurt Dannon makes one with only 17 grams of carbs..

Snacks----
100 cal snack packs are great...
carrot sticks
cheese - Kraft sharp cut in chunks...
cheese its.. I found you can have 17 pieces as a snack...

Dinner---
Meat
1/2 cup of rice or potatoes
veggies...

Dressing is about 3-4 grams of carbs... Italian that is

When I think of more things I have been eating I will let you know.. And if you need coffee or tea.. drink one cup in the morning with splenda and your numbers will be ok

As much as they tell you to drink milk when you have GD 1 glass of milk counts as a snack.. so limit your milk intake..

If you have any questions please ask me I have been through all of this before and I know how hard it is...

use the side of your finger and switch them up daily... after a while you will get tough skin on your fingers and it will hurt less.. I still test every day...

Okay - for anyone new that finds this - let me add the list of snacks I was given by the nutritionist:

Gestational Snack List:

1. 30 large oyster crackers
2. 6 low-fat Ritz crackers
3. 1 cup tomato soup (w/water)
4. 12 Harvest Crisp crackers
5. 20 low fat Cheese Nips
6. 14 low fat Wheat Thins
7. 1 small banana (4 oz)
8. 1 small piece of fruit
9. 3 cups low fat popcorn
10. 6 Saltine crackers
11. 8 animal crackers
12. 29 reduced fat Cheezits
13. 8 low-fat Townhouse crackers
14. 8 ounces of lo-fat milk
15. Nabisco 100 calorie packs
16. 12 grapes (3 oz)
17. 3/4 ounce of pretzels
18. 1 'low fat, sugar free' yogurt - ex: Dannon light & fit or Yoplait light

(OKAY to add protein foods, heart healthy fats & vegetables with snacks).

So basically - she gave me a GREAT list of snacks and not much else....Chat Icon

as the girls have said and i have learned over the last 3 days - it's quite the learning experience..

breakfast for me is now a:

weight watchers whole grain english muffin with 2 scrambeled eggs.

again - as everyone has said - if you can cut a carb with protein - it helps. it also helped with my morning eating naseua (i'm NOT a breakfast person because eating early in the morning has always made me naseuas, since i was a kid)...

i had a high number this morning - 107 - but i know it's because i had a carb snack with NO protein....

I don't have to check with ketone sticks.

But I would have a protein with your evening snack along with the carbs.

Obviously, I don't have GD (DW did, though), but I've been Type 1 diabetic for 23 years.

Get a book on the Glycemic Index. It will really help let you know what foods you can and can't eat. Through years of trial and error, I figured out a lot of what is now in those books....

Don't use your pinky!!!! Man, that finger hurts! Chat Icon I personally prefer the index finger, but obviously use the other ones as well.

For me, I have very little problem with pizza. Not sure why, but it doesn't affect me very much. Bagels are a HUGE no-no, however.... Chat Icon

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread

okay, so since i'm the one with all the ????'s and your answers always make me feel more 'normal'...

little background: both dave & i are night people. He works 3 days a week until 9:00 at night....so we tend to spend our nights together (obviously). We don't go to bed until 1:00 or even 2:00 sometimes because we're watching a movie, or just hanging out, etc. This has been fine - we go to bed late, get up for work at like 8:45...and on our days off (his are tuesday and friday, mine is the normal weekend), we sleep LATE...until whenever our body clock wakes us up.

When we met with the GD Nutritionist, i explained our sleep schedule and she was like, NO WAY. That your body makes more sugar (i could have that wrong) when you are sleeping...so on the weekends, i need to get up early and eat and test, etc. I did that this weekend and now i'm paying for it. I've never been this tired in my life (and i've had mono/epstein barr 3 times)...i'm angry, bitter and upset because of how tired i am...

We meet with the Maternal Fetal doc tomorrow - so i'm obviously going to mention this to her...but is this normal? Was everyone else told not to sleep late??? I feel so depressed and tired....you'd think with the new diet - i'd be FULL of energy...

saw the specialist. NO MEDICATION right now...but she does think it WILL eventually come to that...for now - she said my numbers are OUTSTANDING - NOT at all what she expected based on my failing numbers on the 1 and 3 hour test.

we will have growth sonos starting at 24 weeks and at 32 weeks will start the non stress tests and other things...

Also have to schedule an echo cardiogram for the baby...we shall see. She also wants to keep an eye on my blood pressure - she said any time i'm i a store that has a cuff - use it and write it down.... okay then!

hi. i'm totally crashing here Chat Icon Chat Icon as i'm not pregnant or TTC......but.............i couldn't help myself Chat Icon

i wanted to tell you that for the last 4 months or so i've been trying to follow a low glycemic diet in hopes that i'll lose weight and more importantly reduce the massive amounts of sugar/carbs i was eating. that said.........

i get REALLY sick of drinking water so i feel your pain! i discovered this iced tea from trader joes that i am seriously addicted to. it is unsweetened blueberry pomegranate green tea. i'm not even an iced tea lover but this tea is SO good and has 0 sugar!!! not sure if you have a trader joes near you but i figured i'd throw it out there!

also--the book i've been following is called "The Formula" by gene and joyce daoust. it's an older book but it has some pretty good recipes in it and all the carbs are balanced out by protein.

i admit i don't know much about GD but the diet seems very similar to what is discussed in the book!

good luck!!!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread

when i had GD breafast was never breakfast food. i was also told by my nutritionist to never have in the morning Juice or fruit. it was protein and carb only. she said you are more sensitive to the sugars first thing in the morning. so don't add anything for breakfast that could cause a spike. fruit was ok later in the day. still no juice though. that was a complete no no.

as for breakfast... wonder whole grain white bread. (has more fiber and more protein than most of the bread labelled wole wheat... and the protein and fiber can help slow down the sbsorption of the carbs which keeps your numbers lower and more stable) with some form of deli meat... ham, turkey, roast beef. and a slice of cheese. not exactly breakfast food, but its high protein, low carb and my numbers were always good afterward. (but i will say i did get sick of sandwhiches after 7 months of it... i started with the diet at like 12 weeks becauseof a history of GD)

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread

I have a very different breakfast experience with GD. I eat two eggs, a whole wheat English Muffin & 4 oz. of OJ (the low sugar kind) every morning. or I can eat/drink a smoothie made with plain yogurt, frozen fruit and a Tb. of peanut butter and a slice of whole wheat toast (I eat the high figer kind).

It totally depends on how your body reacts to the food. It can also change by the day!!

Totally agree with this! Some people can do whole grain/whole wheat breads.. I can't. The only type of bread my body tolerates is Weight Watchers Rye or Whole Wheat.

I can also have certain kinds of oatmeal for breakfast, but usually have to have a hardboiled egg along it with it. 9 times out of 10 my blood sugars are terrific, but there's sometimes that one time, or even two times that the oatmeal gives me a reading over 120.
