Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
you know the nurse never told me anythng about squeezing the blood out. I do this probably atlesat half of the time. I'll have to try increasing the number on the pricky thing. I just get annoyed when i try to do it and don't get enough blood and have to do it for a second time. That sucks.

OH MY GOD I KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the only reason i noticed is that i'd have a NOT BAD SUGAR meal and my number would be over 120....so i'd be like - NO...and do it again - not 10 seconds later - different finger...and it was down 8-9 points. I mentioned it at my last visit and that's what she told me.
what i also do now is i'll kinda RUB my finger before i use the alcohol swab (with benzocaine btw - got them at walmart) - to get the blood 'flowing'...

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
So did you know... That i just looked at the Edy's grand ice cream in our freezer and it only contains 18g of sugar for 1/2 cup serving. That's like half of what the weight watchers ones i was looking at in the store have. I'm thinking this may be a good snack every once in a while. I'm allowed 15 grams or carbs, so 3 more isn't too bad.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
interesting!!!! i have to check my card and see how many carbs i'm allowed per meal - it doesn't break down like actual carbs....
i have to look at the carbs per serving. Then it breaks down by:
0-5 grams - does not count 6-10 grams - 1/2 carb serving 11-20 grams - 1 carb serving
and so on. I am allowed 3 carb servings per meal and 2 per snack....way FUN math!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
so the way i read it your allowed a whole cup of regular ice cream for snack. You know i've always read food labels but i do find it funny that the food that is labeled "sugar free" has just as many carbs as the regular ones. And the fat free ones usually have more carbs. Go figure with the deceptive labels

great news on the fasting number being your only issue! maybe try to increase the protein at your late night snack...that should help!

My fasting numbers are the only issue so far with me too, but my dr doesn't want to put my on medicine unless its consistantly above 105. They originally said 95, but since mine are usually between 95 and 105, she;s just keeping an eye on it for now.
If you eat protein like right before you go to bed as your snack it helps to lower your morning number.

I had GD and my fasting number was always an issue (it was high, but not terrible). They put me on Glyubride but only a half a pill at night with my evening snack, and that helped my fasting number. With the 1/2 pill my number was always around 75 in the morning.
Jess - You really are in the home stretch now, hopefully if you do need some "help" with your sugar levels, they will allow you to just go on the pill rather than insulin.
ETA: Eating protein wasn't the answer for me. It really depends on the person. I ate the same snack prior to being on the meds that I did after going on the meds, a perfect balance of protein and carbs.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
okay, so after yesterday's emotional and crying breakdown - i had a easy dinner and my number was okay. i'm going back to basics....what worked early on and just DEAL with being hungry.
I KNOW the doc is going to call me when she sees my numbers today....
Has anyone given any thought to Easter yet? My MIL wants me to call her and tell her what to make me - but i have NO clue....at this point, i'm thinking weight watchers whole wheat english muffin and scrambeled eggs

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Thanks BeachMom!
Well, I'm joining you girls apparently. I will read this thread more in-depth later when I have more time, but it seems like it will be a good resource!
I am pretty scared right now though. I went from practically laughing when the dr. told me about it an hour ago, to now being scared at the prospect of all this measuring, monitoring, calculating, etc. I guess I have to wait and see what they say at Madonna Perinatal (where they sent my paperwork and where I will call for an appt. in a couple of days). I'm not so scared about myself, but about the baby. Do you guys know how "bad" this really can be for them? The woman at the office told me sometimes it just makes for heavier birth weights...but I don't know?

Hey Kim, Basically what it means is that you can have a bigger baby if your GD is not controlled properly. This is my second pregnancy with GD. With my first one I was induced at 38 1/2 weeks and my DD was 5lbs 14 oz. As of 32 weeks they said my LO is measuring at 4lbs 6 oz. So far i've been able to control it with diet, but some people need pills or insulin injections. Basically they will sit you down with a nutritionist who will help you to make a meal plan and will tell you what you can substitute for what. One of my best recommendations is to be completly honest with them with what you may or may not eat and how food affects you. This was they can tailor the diet to you and not you tailoring it to them. Good luck, if you need anything feel free to FM me.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Thanks again for the insight!
I hope I don't need the injection - they didn't say anything on the phone but i suppose I'll find out at the other dr.'s office. They did say they were mailing me prescriptions for the glucometer, test strips, etc.
Good advice about being honest with the nutritionist. I am a very picky eater, which I guess is what scares me about this the most! I am usually such a carb/starch/sugar junkie and I'm just imagining myself eating grilled chicken and broccoli 3 times a day for the next 3 months. I know it won't really be like that but it's still daunting!
Hey, one quick question - can we safely have artificial sweeteners? Or are those a no-no also?

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
kim - i had the SAME issue - i am a CARB JUNKY!!!!!!!!! no joke - the only thing in this pregnancy i have craved has been pizza and pasta...so to be told NO MORE killed me on so many levels!
there are ways to figure it out though and in the beginning, it will be very hit or miss for you.... you TRY something, test after the 2 hours and it may be JUST FINE, or it may be bad and you learn from that bad number....
i have since learned i can have a TINY amount of spaghetti with meatballs (14 to be precise - but they are cocktail size) and be alright with my number. I add in mozarella cheese to that meal and i can have almost a FULL PLATE of spaghetti and my number is wonderful!
i was told that artificial sweeteners are FINE...because we are so limited in what we can and cannot drink and eat, to enjoy whatever 'flavor' we can. i personally, before pregnancy LOVED Coke Zero and now it's my lifeline...

Whew - I am a soda addict so the thought of totally giving it up was killing me! LOL! I will probably cut back a lot (better to drink water anyhow), but good to know I can still have some now and again. I also just had my morning cup of tea, where I usually just put in one Splenda. Then it crossed my mind that maybe I shouldn't. Whew!
Very interesting about the spaghetti and meatballs being okay for you. That's reassuring though I bet like with everything else, it's different between different people. The thought of testing and retesting and all this trial and error is freaking me out but obviously it's manageable if you girls are making it through! I'll get all the info when I see the people at the other office and take it from there I suppose!
I'm TRYING to look on the bright side of this - maybe this will force me to eat healthier and I'll even feel a little better? One can hope!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
it's not really testing and re-testing (once you test, you're DONE)...it's just a lot of testing... in the beginning - it's going to take a while for you to 'get it'...but you will wind up learning a LOT!!!! I know now how my body reacts to things on a much deeper level than ever before... I can process Weight Watchers muffins SO much better than thomas' and honestly, in a pinch (when i couldn't find the ww ones) - i've found that i don't like Thomas' as much anymore...
i'm finding now that 100 calorie snacks CAN fill me...(though i have 2 at a time - to make up my carb snack during the day). For me - it just works and it's surprising!
just like everything else with pregnancy, nothing is SOLID fact and a blanket statement. Because i can do spaghetti, meatballs and cheese does NOT mean you can.. I even tried the barilla plus (wheat pasta) - and my sugar number was HIGHER than normal, plain ole' spaghetti...but a friend of mine was opposite...she was GREAT with the plus and horrid with regular...
be sure to confirm with your doc about the sweeteners - as they all have their own 'things' that they cling to - ya know?
oh and welcome to the thread! not that it's a fun place to HAVE to be....but it's a learning experience...and you get to see the baby more (because of growth sonos, etc..)

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Hey girls,
I have a problem so far, which I would wager is fairly common for people?
I cannot get my morning/fasting # below 90! In fact, since I started testing a week ago, it's been over 100 just about every time (between 100 and 112-ish). I did what the dietician said and had 1 starch and one fat/protein at 10 pm before going to sleep. High in the morning. Just the protein. High in the morning. No snack at all. High in the morning! I am getting frustrated already!
I know she said this # can be the wackiest for people, but I am afraid if I can't get it down, that she's gonna have me put on medication or worse, insulin (I am BAD with hypodermic needles). What gets me the most, though I guess it's still a good thing overall, is that my day time #s have generally been great. I think I've only gone over 120 twice, and it was only by a couple of points.
I know all meals can affect people differently, but do you guys have any advice? Can you share what it is you eat before bed that seems to work for you? Thanks!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Hey Kim -
I'm so sorry i haven't written ya back yet.... i wanted to wait until i got home and checked the 'stuff' they gave me about GD to see if i could find SOMETHING that would work for you....
for me - almost no matter what i eat at night - as long as i include a protein - i'm okay....my numbers have been higher than 80 - but don't normally go above 90....and i haven't gotten any 'bad girl numbers' calls yet from the doc!
my normal night-time snack is weight watchers or a SMALL amount of regular ice cream and a string cheese.....

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Aw Jess don't even worry! I am just impatient
Hmm...so I've definitely been having a string cheese as my protein. It's quick and easy. For the starch, I tried the whole wheat crackers I've been eating during the day, a piece of whole wheat toast and half of a whole wheat english muffin. No luck! Maybe I need to experiment a little more?
I suppose I can get clarification from the doc, but I'm so confused as to why our blood sugar would go up when not eating? Maybe I just haven't researched it enough. But it just seems to me that not eating anything would be better than eating carbs before sleep? Ahhhh!

because sugar builds in the body while you SLEEP!!!! it's why i was originally told i had to stop sleeping late on the weekends.....but then my GD nurse told me - sleep late ONE day and test in the AM - if your number hasn't SPIKED, you're fine...and thank GOD it didn't spike....so i continue to sleep TERRIBLY late on the weekends...
maybe can you INCREASE your protein at night - like have 2 string cheeses and fewer crackers???

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Very interesting about sleeping! And the extra cheese is not a bad idea! Though I'm wondering...if I'd be cutting back on the carbs, are they necessary at all? I wonder if having something to eat if and when I wake up in the middle of the night is a good idea or not? I'll make me more tired from the getting up and going to the kitchen but I wonder...
