Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
I only picked the walnuts because they were the only nuts i could find in the store that weren't salted. I'm having salt issues too with the swollen feet and elevated blood pressure. They're not my favorite, but they do the trick. As for my fasting numbers those are always borderline. My doc says they want 95 or below but won't put me on the sugar pill unless it's above 105. Mine's usually between 90 and 100. As for a late night snack- when i actually have one i do the protein and the carb/sugar. But usually i can't eat a late night snack because anything that i eat after about 6 pm makes me nauseous. I think thats the reason why the doc isn't so worried if my fasting numbers are around 100. It's either take the compazine as anti-nausea medicine and eat the snack to lower the number or let the number be slightly elevated without having to take all of the extra medications.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
95 or below is NICE!! for fasting - mine is 80 or below...
i'm finding my sugars are SPIKING at night - my dinner one for the last 2 nights has been higher than normal...and last night i ate a 'normal' dinner - meaning i've eaten it before and gotten GOOD numbers... It was very upsetting...
i desperately don't want to be put on insulin....

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
I know the fear of insulin alone makes trying to eat right a little easier. I remember with my DD that as i got further along the numbers started to go up slightly. The way I used to deal with it was by adding more protein to my meals. Don't get me wrong the Nurse kept on telling me how fat my baby was going to be becuase i was deviating from the diet. But i was able to keep it under control. Needless to say, my DD was born at 39 week being 6 lbs 0 oz. Let's hope that we don't need insulin!!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
that's just mean - how fat your baby would be, etc....
i've been losing weight - so i guess that's a good thing...and i also keep telling myself my numbers are off lately because i'm feeling so miserable (bronchial thing going on)...
I FULLY expected a call from the GD nurse about my numbers this week - but so far - no call...maybe because i did make it clear how sick i have been (on medication, etc)...
i agree though - as soon as i see something i want to eat SO badly...i just think - needle, shot, insulin and the craving goes bye bye!

Today is the day I start with my blood monitoring, the lady helped me do it this morning but I am so not looking forward to pricking my finger later. I hope it gets easier!

It's not the easiest thing to do, you just have to be ready to do it and do it quick so you get enough blood and don't have to do it again. Good Luck!!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
that's what they told me too - to use fingertips....
then i saw the GD nurse and she was like, think of it this way....you can read braille with your fingertips - there are a TON of nerve endings there... That made SO much sense!!!!!
I use the sides of my thumb, pointer and middle finger...my left hand gets used MUCH more than my right....because i'm a righty...and i have an issue pulling the 'trigger' with my left...it's like i have a mental block against it...

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Thanks ladies! Jess I used the side of my finger and it was a lot better than the tip like the nurse showed me as well. I also stared at a picture of a baby while I pressed the button thinking it was all for her so it's worth it lol

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
So for the first time i got my morning sugar down below 120, it was actually 81. The funny thing is after i got up i grabbed a choc chip cookie and when i was halfway through i realized what i was eating and was like oh s##t. So i made a few egg whites. So for now on i have to remember to stay away from the cookies in the morning.

My numbers are consistantly around 95(from 93-99) The nutritionist says eat your snack later and all protein and she also told me one argument to us with the dr about the numbers and the glucometer. She says that depending on which glucometer you use your numbers could be higher and still be in a safe range. I use the Accucheck 1 touch thing which she told me tests plasma, not whole blood. And if it tests the plasma(which alot of machines do) that your fasting numbers could still go to 105 and your numbers 2 hours after eating could go to 130 and it would still be safe and you wouldn't need to be medicated. As for the other numbers, i'm pretty much able to control them and keep them around 100 by what i eat. My dr wants to see me every week to check the numbers and see if i need medication though. So how are you doing with yours Jess? You still doing ok or are they talking about medication yet?

I'm doing good so far thanks for asking! My numbers are usually around 82-93. The only time I went above what I should have was my first morning reading I had a 91. How is everything going with you?
I have one more little question, the lady who taught me how to use the machine said to test it once a week with a solution to make sure I'm getting an accurate reading, what number is supposed to come up at that test?

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
my numbers have been kinda weird and random...to be honest...i have hit 120 and gone above it - can't lie. Nothing consistently though...
i have to make an appointment to see the GD doc again - the last time i saw her she sent me to the ER - so i never made the appointment. I know when she gets my number every week, she considers if i need to come in...to have the medicine discussion.
INTERESTING about the plasma... I use a Freestyle monitor - it's alright i guess - i have no idea if it tests whole blood or plasma...i'm going to make a point of asking!
i'm not sure about the calibration part of the monitor. The only time i have to 'check' any part of the monitor is when i switch to a new bottle of the testing strips. I have to use this sugar syrup that they gave me with the monitor itself and use a strip. The number that comes up has to be in range of what it says on the bottle...
if you check out your instruction manual - there should be something there about how to calibrate... i believe mine says no calibration needed....
are any of you girls getting TIRED of food?????? i'm just so tired of having to plan out every meal, etc...

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Oh I am getting tired of the food already and haven't even been on the diet for a week yet I can only imagine how you must feel by now. I must confess though I cheated badly tonight, carvel carvalanche with reeses pieces and butterfinger bits but get this waited the 2 hrs and tested my blood just to see how bad my results were and I got only a 108. How can that be? My Dr. told me no sugar at all. Shame on me I know but I had such a bad craving!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
for my birthday this past weekend - i threw out every rule and had pizza and coldstone creamery!!!!
your number was good after CARVEL!?!?!?!?!?!?! i'm sooooooooooooo jealous! i rather like the weight watchers ice cream - but after last weeks' indulgence of Coldstone - it's not as yummy!!!!!
everyone processes' sugar differently - so while you got a 108 on the carvel - if i did it - i might get a 135....and Kristie would get an 85... the only way to KNOW how you will process things is trial and error!
do you have to test after every time you eat or did you do that for dinner?

Lol yeah I was shocked I thought I was going to fail miserably! Mmmm coldstone creamery and pizza sounds like a great birthday! I don't blame you! I have to test when I wake up and 2 hrs after my three meals. I had the ice cream about 1/2 hr after dinner. That was my dinner testing.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Ugh that really stinks, but atleast you still passed! Yeah I really don't understand how I only got a 108 I really was expecting a much higher score, I kept telling my DH maybe my GD test came out wrong, but it couldn't have I failed both of them. My nutritionist said I failed every single hr on my 3 hr test. I am just puzzled.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
I can't believe that we still have about 3 months left and i am already sick of food. But as my dr says( and BTW the nutritionist disagrees with ) you can't specifically deprive yourself. You can't indulge in every sugar filled craving but one or two here or there are ok. Because if you don't give into a little craving here or there you will find yourself binging on everything sugary. Sometimes i swear the numbers on the meter are wrong b/c when it occasionally tests really high, i take out a new strip and retest and its like in the 80's You never can tell. But i feel i may be on the pills sooner than i want b/c i can't really control the fasting numbers. But here's my question to you girls- If you have to be on medication doesn't that mean that you can have the ice cream and some of the sugar now since the medication should be regulating ou insulin? I know it's wishful thinking but theres gotta be a bright spot somewhere in there that i dont have to wait 3 months for

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
awwwwwwww Kristie - i hear you loud & clear. It's so frustrating. I miss being able to go - i'm hungry - let me just grab this or that...now it's i'm hungry - what CAN i eat out of my options??
i don't THINK that being medicated gives us free reign...but i'm honestly not sure. i think i'll be put on the meds soon too - we shall see...
one thing the nurse DID tell me - if you have to SQUEEZE out the blood - that affects your number.
When i started using the prick thing - i used it on ONE....that worked - but now i'm developing callouses (sp?) and i have it on 3...but on other fingers, i can still use 2 - if i don't use those fingers frequently... My point in sharing this is - if i MISTAKENLY use a 2 on a finger with a callous - i'll prick and have to SQUEEZE out the blood using force, as opposed to when i use the 3 and just barely touch my finger and out comes the blood...
is it possible that you're FORCING out the blood and need to increase the number on the pricky thing?
