Re: Getting a gift that is not what it appears...WWYD question...

well my only thing is -- how could you be 100% certain that they didn't know it was a knock off and are trying to pass it off to the receiver as real? like they SAY they got it at retail for full price -- but maybe they could just be saying that so the receiver believes they paid full price.
since i couldn't be sure i'd probably just keep it and deal.
I was thinking this too.

Man that's tough..you don't want to seem ungrateful, but if they paid the original price and not the knockoff they should know. I would say something in private like this.........Oh Molly I LOVE the coach purse. You have such a great memory to remember, but I do have to talk to you about it. You see I know that this is something you are not fimiliar with at all and that it's my sort of thing and that makes it even more special but I have to tell you that this is a knock off. I'm only telling you because I do not want you to be taken advantage of. I love it and use it all the time so please do not think I don't appreciate it. I love that you did this for me and that makes this irreplacable to me. I just worry you might not have been treated fair.

Re: Getting a gift that is not what it appears...WWYD question...
wow this got a lot of responses.
It was not a bag (not sure why people thought that...) it was a watch. It was a "designer" watch. the person who received the watch went to get it appraised to add to their insurance policy, and that is how they know for sure it is a knock-off. The gift-giver had mentioned that they used another friend's jewer, so the person who got the gift went there to see if they had the watch and to see if there were others there or if this was the only watch of that make/design. They had several, and of course the price was displayed. That is how she knew the price.
The person who received the gift told the friend who recommended the jewler to the gift-giver that *her* jewler sold their friend a knock off & charged full price. The friend who recommended the jewler was so angry and embarrassed that she told the gift-giver never to use that jewler anymore, but did not tell them why.
What surprised me was that while we were talking about this was sooooo many people would have just given the gift back. I mean, I am still not 100% sure what I would do, but I think telling the person who recommended the jewler in the first place and not the gift-giver makes the most sense. They obviously thought about how to go about getting this gift and kind of got taken by a recommendation from a friend they trusted....KWIM?

I would feel so bad that the person thought they bought something authentic, paid an authentic price, only to have that not be the case!

I think this was probably the best approach - that way both the person who recommended the jeweler and the gift giver will not use the jeweler in the future and will also tell others not to use him either. The gift giver still thinks she gave a nice gift and the recipient feels like somehow the wrong was righted.
BTW, I said bag because I read it in an earlier response. I think we all read "designer" and "knock off" and just assume it's a bag.

Re: Getting a gift that is not what it appears...WWYD question...
When my husband's niece and my dd were born (3months apart) my MIL bought them each cz's, but told us they were real. Made a big deal about their first diamond and such. I was in the jewelry store one day and the guy tested them for me and told me they weren't real. I never said anything. I know alittle off topic.
