Re: Getting dress for a house of worship
I couldn't believe it when, at my niece's Confirmation, another child's sponsor was wearing a bright red, low cut, short cocktail dress.

i mean, i think there is a time and a place and going to a house of worship is a time for people to dress respectfully
Of course, the other side of the coin is to not go at all. I honestly don't think about what people do and don't wear to a House of Worship for the specific reason of at least they go.....so many people have no religion or morals these days that I'm just happy to see people in the pews no matter what they are wearing.
As long as it isn't me, what difference does it make?
its okay that they go. but i would think that they would dress more appropriately

You know I was thinking the same thing. With church attendance down, I would think they'd be grateful people are still going.
Though I think the rollers/sweat suit was over the top.

Yeah, I don't understand that people don't dress respectfully when going to church. On the other hand, who am I to talk? I wore a strapless dress on my wedding day.

I know what you are saying but I think it comes to respect of where you are and the purpose for being there. In certain situations, just showing up is not quite enough - just like shorts & a tank top is generally not acceptable for working in an office and a velour sweat suit would be inappropriate at a wedding.

Our priest said that to us one Sunday. He said the older people were complianing how disrepectful the young kids were for wearing shorts & sneakers. He said to them but, they are here that's all that matters.
But, I do agree there is a time & place for certain outfits.
Like my husband 4 nieces who all wore jeans & tight (one showing some belly) tops to their Granny's funeral. Could of gotten away with it if they didn't all sing at the ceremony.

Re: Getting dress for a house of worship
I was at church yesterday and I was wearing a clean pair of jeans, a sweatshirt and sneakers. There are some people who get more dressed up and that's their perogative (sp). I personally feel as long as I am clean and presentable I am ok.

I agree with this--its like why should we lower our standards of what is acceptable in a house of worship, just because attendance is down? So basically the ones that DO respect the church and come faithfully in proper attire just have to deal with it because not as many people are coming to the church and therefore everyone should just accept those who wish to come looking like they are ready for a nite out at the club?
Just seems like more and more the idea of being respectful towards things that are sacred is just going out the window. I do not attend church regularly--that's just my choice. BUT when I do attend, for a service, funeral, baptism, etc you bet I'm in my "Sunday best" like my mom taught me.

Re: Getting dress for a house of worship
I think that is fine but also isn't "the Christian thing to do" not to judge others for how they dress? The exception being those who are completely innapropriate, i.e. tank tops and flip flops.

Well I think there is a difference between looking at someone who I don't think is properly attired and saying "Well that's not very respectful for the church" and seeing someone and thinking "OMG what trash! How disgusting that they would come in there like that!"
I think feeling a bit offended that someone isn't being as respectful as they should be IMO at a church isn't judging. There was a time where NO ONE would dare enter a house of worship without being "Sunday best" -- nowadays its a tradition that seems to be fading...I just don't think the whole "well at least I show up" excuse is valid...but thats just me. It sounds like 'well be lucky I come at all and I don't have to put much effort." IMHO its just a little disrespectful to something that I was always raised to believe is a sacred tradition. But I know everyone is different.

I agree with this but in the same respect, I have a strong feeling that the person in question by the OP is probably not a regular church goer anyway and was only there to get their child baptized. I bet that is the last time she'll be in a church until it's time for the first communion. The reason I say this is you can always tell at baptisms, confirmations, communions etc, the people who know how to act in church versus the ones who are only there for the event. As mentioned in this thread, they hoot and holler like they are at sporting event, they dress inappropriately, they talk out loud, they walk in and out like it's a party, etc. So yes, I agree that it's better to show up for church dressed inappropriately than not show up at all- but in this case, I don't think the person in question would be there at all if not for her child's baptism... JMO....

They are the hatched, matched and dispatched church goers .
Maybe getting her child baptized will be the start of a new tradition in their home. Personally I don't really care what other people wear to mass. I don't think me wearing flip flops to mass makes me any less of a good Catholic than someone who wears shoes. Jesus was a sandals kind of guy anyway. The whole point of mass is to listen to the Gospel find how you can relate that to your own life and pray for yourself and others. I would like to think God listens regardless of what you are wearing.

I guess you have a point, it's how you were raised. My mom brought my sister and I to mass every Sunday for the 1st 18 yrs of our lives and as long as we were clean and presentable it was acceptable.

I agree- but when it's tweens/ teenagers who are attending sunday mass with their families- shouldn't the parents be responsible enough to teach their children what is appropriate for mass?
I wouldn't want my 12 year olds wearing ANYWHERE what some of these girls wear to church. And their parents are with them!!!
I mean- adults who should (but don't) know better is a different story.
I will admit that I don't get all gussied up for regular mass- but I do wear decent clothes that don't let it all hang out. Special occasions I will dress up for.

See, I DO attend Church regularly and there are times when I'm not feeling well, have to go and do something immediately after, whatever - and I'm not all in my "Sunday Best". But I'm there almost every week. I know my priest and again, I don't judge what others are wearing because it's not my place to judge others.
I would rather see people there, no matter how they are dressed. Just like I think people should bring their children no matter what age to Church. I don't understand getting angry at someone who has brought their baby...I feel it's better that they are there at all.

Re: Getting dress for a house of worship
I am always under dressed for church.
When its nice out, I walk the 2.5 miles there...so I am in athetic gear.
other days, it's jeans and a sweater or polo shirt.
The people in my neigborhood go alllllllll out. The Catholics at my church really put on their sunday best.
The black people in my neighborhood though...wow...BIG hats, gloves, shimmery dresses.
On Sunday mornings, I am in my parking lot with the stroller, wearing underarmour capris leaving for church. My neighbors are decked out. Young boys were suits. And they are in church ALL DAY in these clothes.

That is true, and casual clothes, don't bother me so much (although, I secretly wish I went to a church where the ladies wore fancy hats ), but when you see someone think it is appropriate to have their tops & bottom hanging out, it kind of makes you wonder what's on the inside. Also, it is distracting/disturbing, to other people who come to worship.
