I think that is fine but also isn't "the Christian thing to do" not to judge others for how they dress? The exception being those who are completely innapropriate, i.e. tank tops and flip flops.
OK- so I wear flip flops and tank tops to church during the summer... and I don't think it is a big deal at all... I do agree with you though- as Jesus said, those without sin should cast the first stone

I do not attend church regularly--that's just my choice. BUT when I do attend, for a service, funeral, baptism, etc you bet I'm in my "Sunday best" like my mom taught me.
See, I DO attend Church regularly and there are times when I'm not feeling well, have to go and do something immediately after, whatever - and I'm not all in my "Sunday Best". But I'm there almost every week. I know my priest and again, I don't judge what others are wearing because it's not my place to judge others.
I would rather see people there, no matter how they are dressed. Just like I think people should bring their children no matter what age to Church. I don't understand getting angry at someone who has brought their baby...I feel it's better that they are there at all.
I completely agree... I am go every sunday and I know I don't look so fancy- but our parrish is pretty casual. the way I see it is- it's between me and God- and well, i'm a jeans/flip flop/tank top kind of girl- and that's who I am- and I don't think it is disrespectful..

I am all for dressing casual for church. Even a sweatshirt and sweatpants would be fine. What bothers me is the sexually inappropriate clothing- like massive amounts of cleavage, super short shorts- that to me is what is extremely disrespectful. You dont' have to dress in your Sunday best- just cover your ta-tas please!

Re: Getting dress for a house of worship
There was a wonderful article/photo spread in the Village Voice a few years ago about Sunday mornings in Harlem. It basically captured the old fashioned "Sunday Best" rituals that still exist among churchgoers up there. I'll see if I can find some pics.

Re: Getting dress for a house of worship
I was taught as a child to dress nicely for church and I still do to this day. I will teach my children the same. I'm not talking fancy-schmancy, but I wear what I would wear to work. No jeans or sneakers, ever.

Re: Getting dress for a house of worship
In church I saw a girl that was somewhere between the age of 10 - 12 wearing a pencil skirt, a tight top and 5 inch stilleto's. She looked like she was 12 going on 22 going on a hot Friday night date.
I was taught to dress nice for church, shoulders covered, and be respectful in God's home.

Re: Getting dress for a house of worship
I think I'd also be less offended by someone who is very casual (i.e. in flip flops) vs. someone who looks like she raced in from her shift at Scores.
ETA- not that I find casual dress offensive, just saying that half-nekkid is just wrong for church.

my friend got married in a Catholic Church and many of her cousins and Grandma showed up to the ceremony in rollers and sweatsuits. I was shocked
so what was she 'saving her hair' for then? the reception?

Re: Getting dress for a house of worship
If you go to Italy you are not allowed in the church unless you are wearing sleeves and you are covered down to your knees. If you go to the Vatican, they actually have guards stationed at the entrance to prevent people in shorts and tank tops from entering.
