Common sense. I said it earlier. People are afraid of "different". And from what I've read here regarding the character of the shooting victims, it seems that discrimination runs deep. That's all.
I'm not afraid of other ethnic groups, I am afraid of armed robbers. That is different to me.

ETA: I mean, we've already established that the shooting victims were up to no good and all had priors, so it's OK. All this, without all the info being out.
Ever thought the cops were just scared and shot first to ask questions later?
Ever think that it has nothing to do with color...but the element and environment they were in?
The people known for frequenting this strip club weren't known for their "community service".
Oh I'd love to live in Utopia, where this is the case. Can't say this is the case in this instance, though.
It was his BACHELOR PARTY...where else was he supposed to go?
I know my DH went to a strip club, in Queens, for his. It wasn't in the best area either.
Is that a crime? Because he didn't go to Scores, or in an affluent area, or a club frequented by caucasians, then he's a criminal or up to no good?
Please. It's gross. What is being assumed is gross.
I would love to be proved wrong. Really, I would.

If someone drove into my car not once, but twice, unprovoked, if I had a gun, I would open fire as well. Obviously, if someone does that, they are trying to hurt me. Once, ok, maybe it was an accident, but twice?
Not sure if I'd open fire but I would definitely feel threatened and want to do something to stop it.
I do think 50 shots is excessive but without knowing the full story, I can't honestly say. Regardless of past records, what was being done in the present was enough for the cops to react in the present as they saw fit - within the realm of the law.

Sharpton absolutely loves this stuff.
When I lived upstate Sharpton caused soooo much trouble with the Tawana Brawley case--she lied and said she was raped by a group of white men--he called the District Attorney a racist and a rapist. He ruined the man's career and life. Turns out she had made up the whole story. Sharpton should really get his facts straight before ruining the lives of innocent people.
I'm not saying what happened was right, but Sharpton is sooo quick to get on board without finding out the facts. It is exactly for this reason that I have never had one ounce of respect for the man. ANd once he found out she was lying, he did nothing to apologize for the false accusations that he helped propogate. So irresponsible.

Having fired many different kinds of weapons, I have to wonder if any legal police issue firearm would shoot off 50 rounds in "seconds." The only "handgun" type weapon that I know of that could do this is an Uzi.
The fact that one of the officers had to re-load his weaopn though gets me. What were they staking out at that club? Why were these men suspected of having A firearm in their car?
Too much still unknown, but again I will stick to my original statement, 50 rounds is excessive.
One officer fired 31 rounds. He used up on magazine (16 rounds...including what was already loaded in the chamber) and reloaded and used the 2nd mag which would be 15 rounds.
Here's the rundown: 31 shots: 12-year veteran
3: 5-year veteran
1: 9-year veteran
11: Undercover office, 5-year veteran
4: 17-year veteran

I'm not making any assumptions about the men shot. I'm not saying they were doing anything wrong. What I'm trying to say is that the officers are in a location known for it's illegal activities. Try and understand what's going on in their heads. Have you ever thought about walking in their shoes???

I don't know enough of what happened to "think like them" or walk in their shoes. You seem to have a lot of info that others don't though.
I'm not sure they try thinking like a citizen either. Or are they trained to?
Kinda silly, if you ask me.
I guess I'll wait, and read, all the details. Or as many as they feel like leaking.
It's already a blame game.
And I stand by what I said. 50 shots is a bit much...especially when there was no return fire.

I also think that the story, tragic as it may be for those invovled on BOTH sides, has been sensationalized. Do I think all the facts are out there? No, of course not. DO I think they will, probably not.

Situation: You and your fellow officers feel threatened for whatever reason and open fire...do you think one officer turns to the others and says "Hey guys...wait a minute! Jimmy, you only fire because 5 of us opening fire is just too much!"
5 officers opened fire. To me...that says they felt their lives or one of their fellow officer's lives were in danger.

Really? 'Cause I pretty much get that from you. You don't come accross as the most non-biased person to me.
If it "has NOTHING to do with anything" why would you post it then?
I mean, we're big kids. Let's not be naive.
He could have been white...he didn't have to be a minority. I'm calling it like I see it.
He's being blamed.
And the fact is that he could have been wrong...but no one knows.
I'm just disgusted by the statements about character and location, etc.
Is it relevant, at this point?
Not to me.

She did say it had nothing to do with anything. And I agree, that is not a normal situation. Out at 4am at a strip club, known for prostitution, and leaving with one of the strippers? This is what you do the night before your wedding? Im sure they were up to no good. Just my opinion. And he did say, " go get my gun".....so come on.

I can't think that way because my husband wouldnt plow his car into an off duty police officer on his way to a diner with a stripper.
How true is that! As far as the whole 50 shots and shoot to kill thing - DH is in the court officer academy right now and they are being taught - shoot at the torso (largest body part) - oh and by the way, he was saying that a 15 round clip is fired off in less than 15 seconds, multiply that by four or five cops and how many shots is that?! Sorry, my opinion is that officers are trained and usually in a situation they are doing whatever is appropriate for the situation. None of us were there and we have no idea what the facts are.
Oh yeah, and as far as Diallo - didn't it end up he had what looked like a gun and didn't speak english and didn't respond to the police who were looking for an armed man that was reported in the building?

Just to play devil's advocate a little here, but how do we know that he was not friends with the girl(s)? I know my DH went to a club for his bachelor party where we knew several of the girls - people that we would often go to the diner with after work to make sure none of their customers were trying to "follow" them home. Again not to say that this is the case, but why automatically assume the worst?
Granted, he did not hang out with any of them after his party, nor is it a club known for prostitution, but just playing devil's advocate for a minute.

Re: Groom Killed on Wedding Day
Plain and simple, these people werent "wonderful people"...whether they were white, black or orange. They were feared by the cops for a reason. The situation wasnt exactly "normal" and while I do admit that 50 shots is excessive, I do not believe it has anything to do with race. 2 of the cops were black...so that is OUT!
And for someone to say that location shouldnt matter is total BS! Of course location matters! When you know the "history" of a neighborhood, it makes you think totally different, especially if you are an enforcer of the law.

I absolutely agree with the above. I don't think we'll ever know the full truth.

5 officers opened fire. To me...that says they felt their lives or one of their fellow officer's lives were in danger.
Regarding the above, I would hope that that's why they would shoot so many rounds. I would pray to God that they take their "to protect and serve" oath seriously. As I'm sure most do.
But we don't know all the facts. At least I don't. So I can't say why they did what they did. I don't think anyone can, at this point.
ETA: Regardless of all the lunacy, it's unfortunate that someone died. Someone lost her fiancee, babies lost their dad, a mother lost her son.
And the cops aren't winners either.
No one won. It's just a horrible tragedy all around.
And I don't think this will help police/community relations either.

from NYT article "The whole thing most likely took less than a minute. The officer who fired 31 times could have done so in fewer than 20 seconds, with the act of reloading taking less than one second, Mr. Cerar said. "

Sorry, I cant relate. My FH doesnt hang out with strippers. And I can tell you he would not be going out with them, to the diner or anywhere else. You can try and justify it as much as you want. Its not a normal situation. Im sure most people would agree.
