Had such a scare last night...

So last night I had such a scare. In reality it wasn't that bad, but definitely could have been a lot worse and a big eye opener.

DS#2 is 5 months old and still sleeping in the Rock n' Play next to our bed. I know, I know, he should be in his crib, but I nurse and its nice having him there, and we are trying to finish his room in the next month. DS #1 went into his crib at 6 months old too, no issues.

Well, DS#2 was asleep in the Rock n' Play, still likes to be swaddled, and I didn't go to bed until 12:30am. I heard him crying a little when I was getting ready for bed, more of a sleepy whine. I came in the room to go to bed and found that even though he was swaddled from the chest down, he managed to roll over in the Rock n' Play to his belly!!! He was basically face down!!! I think he had his head turned to the side and so he wasn't having trouble breathing and he was still asleep for the most part, just looked uncomfortable, but my heart sank!!! I was so scared. It prob just happened when I came in, but I thought with the incline and how sunken in he was in that thing, that it would have been hard to roll. I was so wrong. I just pictured being one of those moms who thought if I only went in there sooner... uggh such a scary thing. And I usually have the video monitor, but figures its the one night it wasn't plugged in during the day and the battery was dead. DH was in the room with him, but didn't notice. Im shaken up but DS is fine, NO more swaddle, and definitely belted in until he can move into his crib Chat Icon

Thanks for sharing and I'm glad your DS is okay!!!!!

How scary! I've had a scare before and have definitely felt the same way. My kids slept in my room in pack n plays until 8 months old because of my paranoia. Once i shot up in the middle of the night out of nowhere to find DD face down in her pack n play. She was about 5 months old 3 months adjusted. Scariest thing ever! Glad he is ok. What about having him sleep in a pack n play instead of the rock n play until his room is ready?

I dont mean to scare you more, but we had to stop putting ds in the rnp around that age because even though he was belted in, he would push himself up (as if he was trying to stand) and he would manage to get out of the belt. we were worried he was going to flip the rnp. i know how convenient it is having him there, but you may want to consider moving him sooner rather than later. ds managed to push himself out of the of the swing (at 4 months) and the bouncer seat...we just couldnt chance anything else

Thank you all so much! Im so glad I can talk on here and have moms comment, def helps. I also wanted to put it out there in case there were moms similar to me doing this! DS had never even really moved in his sleep before. He has had his first real cold, so maybe he was sleeping lighter? There is not a lot of room to fit the pack n play in our room although that would be a good idea, so I was hoping maybe if I just don't swaddle him and buckle him in the Rock n Play? What do you ladies think? Or should I try to squeeze the pack n play in?

And he loves the swaddle and feeling closed in. I guess I wouldn't swaddle him if I moved him to a pack n play either? Im just afraid of him all sprawled out on a flat mattress with no swaddle, but is that best?

oh wow. Glad everything is ok & thanks for sharing...

hmm... my 4 month yr old is still in rnp but she doesn't get swaddled. We moved her to her room, hoping to transition her to crib shortly. She has acid reflux so been holding off but I do know she needs to be in crib.. Dr. says at this pt. she will be fine in crib but I guess Im just nervous...

Thanks for sharing though, found this very interesting. Time to make the switch too!!

OMG! How scary! We had to stop the RNP as well Bc my DS would try to sit up in it and I was afraid he would flip it.

That is so scary! My son is 6 mo and still sleeps in his rnp next to my bed. We have been trying the crib transition for the past month or so but it is not going well at all. Anyway I found it interesting that you mentioned your son had a cold and pulled this stunt. My son also had a cold this week and Saturday night for the first time ever turned in his rnp too. He didn't flip all the way to his belly but was 3/4 of the way there when I saw it on the video monitor (it was before we went to bed). He is normally SO good in there, never tries to get out or rock it. He sits up in it but only when its time to wake up. He enjoys being in there so I think he knows not to mess around usually. I really really have to focus on getting him out though... Scary stuff! Glad your son is ok!

Wow, yeah that is exactly my son!!! He loves it in there and knows it means sleep, and the incline helps him. Uggh

Re: Had such a scare last night...

I have limited space, and the pack and play didnt fit because of the width, but a portable crib did. They are smaller in width so It worked out great for us. Not sure how much room u have but it might work for you. Mine looks like this.

Glad your DS is okay!

At 8.5 months, we are still using the RnP (with the belt) for naps during the day. DS loves it and naps so much better in it then in the crib... He also still uses the swing on occasion so I think its depends on the temperament of the child. DS is not much a roller though.

Very scary!

Babies shouldn't sleep in this kind of stuff, carseats, swings, etc. When they try to roll, they get trapped, and could ultimately suffocate. I've heard of this happening more than once :(

To answer your other question, yes, laying on a flat mattress "sprawled" out is best (and safest) Chat Icon

I have a follow-up question to this because now I'm paranoid and don't want to let my DS stay in the rock n play.

its fine to still swaddle him and put in the crib right? i only swaddle his bottom half. arms are free.

I feel stupid asking this but I don't remember what we did with my first.

So scary....

We always belted in the R n p for overnight... and I think we stopped us in it around 2 to 3 months so it wouldn't be a tough transition to crib

It is safe to swaddle until the child is able to "break free" from the swaddle blanket. It is probably best to continue swaddling while you transition your little one to the crib then try introducing a sleep sack.

So glad your DS is ok.

If he can roll - I would not swaddle at all. It gives them free range of motion to lift arms and legs to position their head correctly. Move him into his crib ASAP and put him in a sleep sack. He will cry at first because he'll have a bunch of room but he will adjust.

Oh wow, that is super scary. I have to say I think the RnP is out of the question now. Try to squeeze the PnP in your room. Do you use sleep sacks (sack or the ones with feet)? My daughter sleeps in her fleece sleeps (over her pjs) and I wrap her in a blanket but her arms are free. She rolls all over with no problems in her crib

When I transitioned to crib at 5mos dd wasn't too happy about it until I got her a sleep sack. Like overalls but the bottom is a blanket. She was so happy because I think she felt covered and secure instead of with nothing on top of her.

You use the sleep sak over her pjs and a blanket?
