Hanging a flat screen TV on the wall
I've seen pictures of people who have done this, and their cable boxes are nowhere to be found-like they were hidden. Anyone know what I'm talking about and know how they do this?

Re: Hanging a flat screen TV on the wall
my aunt just did this. her cable box/dvd player are all in a closet. She said there is some type of infared gadget you buy to put on your remote and you can put your boxes anywhere. so cool!

Re: Hanging a flat screen TV on the wall
you need an hidden ir kit... i would check out smarthome.com for them
remember, the electrical for the flat screen must be behind the tv as you can run power though the wall.

Re: Hanging a flat screen TV on the wall
We did this recently and purchased a Logitech Harmony 890 remote instead of an IR kit. This helped us consolidate all remotes into one. Now when we want to watch TV we hit one button and the remote does the rest... it turns on the TV, turns on the cable box, then turns on the AV receiver and finally changes the channel to one we pre-set!
You can even set it up to control your lights and security system. (Haven't tried this yet)
Downsides are that it is not cheap and you need to be somewhat techie to set it up (or know someone that is). Patience too... you need lots of that! But once its setup it works great!
Another plus is that it sits in a rechargable base so no batteries are required.
Here are some links:

We have that remote and I have NO CLUE how to use it.
SIL has all their boxes and DVD players hidden. They are in the basement. They have one little black thing under the TV which is what they point the remote at. Pretty cool I think.

This is what we did for our bedroom.
All the components are hidden in the closet and DH and my dad installed an electrical outlet directly behind the flatscreen.
We use a Universal Remote:
(Attached is a photo of our bedroom tv.)
My DH also set up something similar for my sister and her DH. They have a tv in their kitchen, but the cable box is in the basement.

Re: Hanging a flat screen TV on the wall
DH just did this in our bedroom. we did not have room to have a table with a TV on it and/or one with a cable box on it.
we mounted the tv on the wall FH ran electrical from the outlet on the side through the wall up through the radiator. he made a new outlet behind the TV. this way we can plug the TV in behind the TV so no wires are shown. then he ran the cable line down the the basement. Mounted the cable box on the wall. we purchased an EYE at Radio shack that he mounted in front of the cable box and then put the other up in our room. we shoot the remote towards this "eye" to change the channels. thus we do not need to have the cable box in our room.
here is a pic of the TV on the wall with no wires seen

We have all of our components hidden in our basement since our den has a wall that is shared with the basement. You can also hide components in a closet. We got the device you will need from smarthome.com. It's called a Hidden IR Repeater System and costs about a $100.

Re: Hanging a flat screen TV on the wall
now, if you use a logitech remote with an hidden ir, you will able to have 1 remote and no boxes in the room.
the remote ask you what you want to do. if programmed correctly, its very easy to change channels, sources (dvd, tv, games, etc..)
Even if you don't know how to use it, press the help button.

Be careful, that is most likely against electrical code and could cause big problems.
You cannot put any flat screen power cables inside a wall. Flat screens typically need a recessed electrical outlet installed behind them if you want to mount it to the wall.
Plus it doesn't look like that TV is venting very well.
Godforbid if there is ever a fire in your house and an inspector from your insurance company comes by to assess your damage, they can use this to deny your claim and that can get ugly.
Just sayin'.

Re: Hanging a flat screen TV on the wall
I've read a lot about the flat panels and electrical. Supposedly routing the electrical cables thru the walls can void homeowners insurance, if there ever is a claim for fire.

thanks! i appreciate the concern but our families are electricians and plumbers and said it would be fine.
the power cords are not in the wall DH ran an outlet on the wall behind the TV to plug the TV in. The vents on the TV are on the Top of the TV not on the bottom/

i dont really understand what you are saying because all eletrical cords are run through the walls. also, people move outleys and light switches all the time.

Romex is run through walls because it is CL2 rated to withstand fires and not cause any problems.
Your typical flat screen TV power cable is not because it is not CL2 rated. Running the flat screen's power cable through the wall is no doubt against electrical code regardless of what any electrician says and like the above poster said it can void your homeowners policy. If your homeowners insurance denies your claim and you try to sue them over this you will lose.
This is why you need a recessed outlet behind the flat screen TV. Because the outlet is connected with Romex and that is what makes it code.

Re: Hanging a flat screen TV on the wall
Take a look at THIS THREAD I found by doing a quick search.
See how the electrical outlets are behind the TVs?
That's the way it needs to be done to be code. It's ok to run video and audio wires through the wall, as long as they are CL2 rated (it will say CL2 on the wire in tiny letters - if it doesn't say this it isn't CL2 rated). But you definitely can't run your TV's power wire through the wall.

Re: Hanging a flat screen TV on the wall
Based on what I'm reading, agl's DH installed an outlet behind the tv, so the tv's power cables aren't in the wall.
My concern would be electrical being run through the radiator, unless I'm misunderstanding agl.

But it looks like the TV itself is flush to the wall. So if that's the case everything is theoretically behind the wall (sheetrock).
Unless I am not looking at the picture correctly which is possible.

I don't think it's flush. You can see a shadow surrounding the left side & bottom of the TV.
