I try not to buy things with high fructose corn syrup. When I go grocery shopping, it's always a 2 hour trip because I read every label.

An easy way to shop is by knowing that not one of the Trader Joe's brand products contain HFCS

That's why nearly all of my grocery shopping is done at Trader Joe's.
I don't allow high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners in the house. If I have to use a sweetener I use agave or raw organic sugar in the smallest amount possible.
Many believe there is a link between cancer cells and sugar. My friend just buried her brother to brain cancer and her mother died from it 10 years ago. She's recently given up all sugar.

Just check the labels and avoided processed food. Once you get the hang of it , it is quite easy. If you need sugar use coconut palm sugar , raw honey or maple syrup ( in extreme moderation ). I find a little goes a long way with these sweeteners. Organic stevia is an option too.

We don't use HFCS in our house.
I've found the biggest culprits are condiments, so now that I know which brands to buy it isn't too bad. (Trader Joes, Stubbs, Simply Heinz)
It is also in most breads, so read labels there too!

Re: has anyone given up sugars and high fructose corn syrup?
When I first started, I did a simple inventory of what I was buying and wrote down what had HFCS in it. I then researched online if there were alternatives. For most there is and for what ever there wasn't, we found we don't miss it at all.
My cousin died of multiple cancers a few years back and he was told to stay away from sugar when he was diagnosed by his oncologist. I don't have sugar in my coffee anymore nor do I bake with it anymore.

Yes, it's easier than you'd think to give it up. But HFCS is not exclusive to desserts...it's found in ketchup bbq sauce and so on.
When you say give up sugars what do you mean? Regular sugar, artificial sweeteners?

Re: has anyone given up sugars and high fructose corn syrup?
I try my hardest to stay away. I try to buy mostly organic stuff, shop at TJ's a lot. It makes me so mad that they put that stuff in almost everything. The only time I knowingly buy something with HFCS is when I have my occasional coca-cola cravings

The 365 brand of soda from Whole Foods is so good and uses cane sugar! That might satisfy your craving!

I don't buy anything with high fructose corn syrup, but I'm sure I still eat it in things when we eat out.

has anyone given up sugars and high fructose corn syrup?
i've been working on this SLOWLY in my house because i don't want to be overwhelmed.
i've switched a few brands already and am doing my best to make as much as i can from scratch.
some of the new brands that i buy are more expensive, but i don't care.
i've already changed: * pasta sauce * cereal * baking items * boxed/canned tomatoes (sodium) * canned beans (sodium) * salad dressing
next on my list will be seasonings and spices/spice mixes.
we've also moved completely away from quick-fix meals (like pre-seasoned rice mixes and such) (again, because of the sodium).
it's not always an easy process, especially at the beginning... but i do see a change for the positive in everyone

May I ask what book you are reading? This sounds like something I should start doing in my house.

I recently read "It Starts With Food" i am not sure if that is what the OP is talking about but it sounds similar. Very eye opening.
I don't eat foods that list "ingredients" I shop the perimeter and make everything myself. No processed foods. If you cut out processed foods you will cut it all out of yo ur diet.

If you buy the imported coke from Mexico, it uses cane sugar (and tastes a hell of a lot better too)

I recommend the book, "what to eat" I forgot the author off the top of my head, but she's a nutritionist who doesn't literally tell you what you should/shouldn't eat but gives you a lot of insight into certain things. I also highly highly recommend the documentaries, Food Inc., Forks over Knives, and even Fat, Sick and Nearly Deal (all can be found on netflix). I'll admit, there is a lot of stuff in the movies that I don't agree with (like the guy with crazy hair saying why you should only eat raw food), but they bring up a lot of good points as well. We've definately cleaned up our eating habits in the last 2 years and feel a lot healthier.

Re: has anyone given up sugars and high fructose corn syrup?
I do not eat HFCS.
I reduced my sugar intake by about 80% last September. I immediately lost about 15 pounds, it was great. I didn't even work out - then, I started working out again after I lost weight to tone up. Wonderful results. I felt healthier and happier than ever before. I felt so much less bloated as well. It is AMAZING how many things have an obscene amount of sugar in them - and things you wouldn't expect. A ton of "diet" or "reduced fat" items just jack up the sugar while lowering the fat grams... and it ends up being worse for you than just eating a reasonable amount of the real stuff. So, I learned a lot from that and from reading labels. I never drink soda of any kind. That's probably the worst sugar offender of them all.
