Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

Do you feel your hospital stay was too long or too short after giving birth? In my case, I think it was way too short.

My labor lasted almost 24 hours, and I gave birth at 9 pm (so that counted as one day). My insurance covered one more day in the hospital, then I had to go home. This was a vaginal birth. I honestly feel one more day would have made a world of difference for me--more r & r plus more time to ask the nurses for baby care and feeding tips (this was my first child).

So for you, too long or too short?

With a psycho roommate, wayyyyy too long. I had the c/s on Tuesday and wanted to leave on Friday but the boys weren't ready to leave so I stayed until Saturday.

I do think that if u give birth at night, like you did, that shouldn't count as day 1! That's crazy!

Mine was too short.

I got to the hospital at 6:30am on a Monday, was induced, had DS at 9:10pm and was home by 4pm on Wednesday.

We hadn't really gotten much time to know each other before we were on our own!

Just right, I couldn't wait to get out of there and back into my home.

Found it impossible to rest with all the staff coming in every hour to ask usual list of stupid questions.

Just the right amount of time. I gave birth on Thursday at 4pm and went home Saturday afternoon. I could have even gone home Friday night or early sat morning b/c I felt great but they had to wait for the ped to come on sat to check DD & give her the okay.

Mine was a dream..

I had a c-section and my insurance allowed me to stay for 5 full days. I had a private room and at the end of 5 days I didn't want to go home Chat Icon I got food delivered to me, nurses to help with the baby and amazing pain meds. I highly reccomend Overlook Hospital! Chat Icon

Just right I think. Had DD at 7:30pm on Friday and went home Monday. I could have stayed until Tuesday, but I went in on Thursday morning and just wanted to be home.

Mine was just right. Ds was born at 12:41 am. The nurses refused to let me push b4 midnight, bc they know the insurance rules and wanted me to get that extra day. So we got to the hospital Saturday, Ds was born Sunday and we left Tuesday morning.

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

too short

had DD at 9am on Wed
went home at 12pm on Saturday

so, I only stayed 3 days for a C-Section

I thought I was feeling great but in retrospect I could have used the extra time. I really needed the help of the LC because DD wouldnt latch and I had an overproduction of milk which led to mastitis. Also, I did way too much too quickly.

If I have another LO, I will make sure to stay the FULL five days! Chat Icon

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

Just right, though i wanted to go home sooner, i just was so lonely at night - DS was in the NICU, I made DH go home at night bc he had already slept on chairs for 2 nights and i was in a private room.

went in Sat AM to be inducided
gave birth c/s Sunday 3pm
went home Wednesday

If DS was kept in NICU one more day, my Dr was going to keep me another.

To long!

induced at 9am on Saturday Had DS at 8:22pm left at 4pm on Monday!

I had preeclampsia and had really high BP, but I think my BP would have calmed down if I went home. All the machines hooked up to me made me more anxious!

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

TOOOOOOOOO long!! Only because I was induced. I was in the hospital for 5 nights and left on the 6th day in the afternoon.

If I hadn't been induced 3 days would've been just right with the C-section.

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

toooooooooooo short

I had issues with my blood pressure and ended up back in the ER a week later. I think they should have kept me longer. I also think I needed more time to understand what it was I was doing.

I wish I could have stayed until I was at least mostly heeled and better taught. I didnt even get a LC until the next to last day.

ETA: C/S Friday morning 10am, went home Tuesday morning

I was feeling well enough to go home after one night's stay. The beds are just so uncomfortable for a tall person.

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

Too long both times, I want to get my baby and go home (even though the nurses were pleasant, I had my own room, etc-I just wanted to be home). I was there for 3.5 days with DD (in Sunday night, home Thursday) and 2.5 with DS (in Monday morning, home Wednesday).

Especially with DS-I missed DD so much and really couldn't wait to get home to see here-she couldn't visit, it was during flu season and they wouldn't let kids visit the hospital-I missed her sooo much for those 2 1/2 days.

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

Went in for induction on Friday 4/2 @ 4:30am. Had DD by Csection at 5:08pm. I was told I could stay until Tuesday, but I went home Monday at about noon because I felt good (except for obvious csection discomfort) Ped cleared DD to go home too.
They told me that since I had DD in the evening, I was able to stay until Tuesday, but my roommate was psycho and I just wanted to be HOME.

I guess just right...I got to the hospital at around 2:30-3 am Sunday and had the baby at 12:34pm and left on tuesday at around 1pm. I was sooo exhausted though b/c I was awake all day Saturday through until Sunday night b/c the time I started to feel contractions was like 11pm Saturday night.

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

Too short! I got to the hospital at 6:00 AM on a Monday and had DS 3:28 PM that same day.

However, I developed preeclampsia and had to be a special recovery room for 24 hours after delivery. I was on medication that made me woozy the whole time. I was unable to sleep because the blood pressure cuff went off every 30 minutes and I was checked on a lot - and I had not slept the night before since my contractions started at midnight. I could not get out of bed so that meant NO SHOWER Chat Icon and I needed a bed pan Chat Icon . The worst part was that I could not really see DS Chat Icon

I finally got to my room around 3:30 PM the next day but STILL was not allowed out of bed (they needed to wait for the medication to leave my system) until about 9:00 PM!!

I barely slept that night because they needed to check my BP and was still high.

And then, they sent me home the following day in the morning in the middle of the blizzard Chat Icon

ETA: I could not believe they sent me home because my blood pressure was barely under control when I left.
