Too long. I asked to leave after only 24 hours after baby #2 and baby #3.

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

My stay was just right. I stayed 4 nights after a C section. While I wanted nothing more than to be home, it was best that I did as much recovering as I could in the hospital. I was in so much pain from the section that I wouldnt have functioned well at home if I went home sooner. I also had a private room which helped.

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

Just right. For DS I had an emergency c/s at 10 pm on a Wednesday and left Sunday morning at 11 am. For DS, by the time I actually got to my room it was almost midnight and they did not count it as a day. For DD I had a scheduled repeat c/s at 9 am on a Wednesday and left on Saturday morning.
ETA: For DS I had a really complicated pregnancy so they kept us longer for that too. I had the option of staying until Monday for him but chose to leave after 4 days.

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

with both girls, I had a c-section on Sunday and went home on Thursday.

DD #1 I stayed an extra day because I had to leave without her. She stayed in the NICU for 5 weeks.

DD #2 I stayed an extra day because she was also in the NICU. but was released and went home the same day as me.

I had a private room with DD #1, best part of the whole experience.

I had my own room for one (two?) nights with #2, but then the crazy roomate moved in.

Mine was pretty on target. I went in on a Tuesday night when my water broke, had DD on Wednesday morning and left on Saturday. I had a c section. So 4 nights total..they wanted to keep me in until Sunday but I felt good and just wanted to be home in my own bed.

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

I wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible.

With Ella, I had her 12:59am Sunday and left on Monday (I had the option to stay until Tuesday).

With Erik, I had him Saturday morning, and was forced into staying the 2 nights because they wouldn't release him until Monday.

A friend in CA went home the same day she delivered! She had the baby around 5am and was home by dinner!

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

I think it was just right.

With DD I was induced.

Admitted to the hospital Sunday night at 10pm

Delivered DD Monday afternoon

Home Wednesday night (we had to wait around as we didn't know if DD would be going home with us as she had very bad jaudice)

With DS -
scheduled c-section. Arrived at the hospital 9am on Wednesday, DS was born at 11:58am.

Home Sunday afternoon.

This past one did seem long, but that's because I really missed DD.

Too short. I yearned for the days of yore where a vaginal delivery earned you 10 days in the hospital.....Chat Icon

I have to add though- I gave birth in MD where all rooms are private with wireless access and flat screen TVs. They even had "room service" rather than 3 meals a day with limited choices.Chat Icon

Well, that seems long! I remember my Mom told me she was in a week with me.

But it was way too short for me--might have helped if DC slept at all the first few nights, but every night he was up--all night, though this is hardly unusual.

I just felt like one more day would have done me a world of good--in terms of how I felt and answering additional questions about caring for DS. But I'm glad a lot of people found it was just right.

I thought mine was perfect. I delivered at 6:35 am after 5 hours of labor on a Monday and could have left on Tuesday if I wanted to but my nurse recommended I stay an extra day (since my insurance covered it) to take advantage of the lactation specialist and o make sure I got the hang of BF. Boy am I am glad I did. Went home on Wednesday afternoon more confident about BF and feeling better physically too.

Just right. Got to the hospital Thursday around 12:30 pm and had DD at 3:50pm. Went home Saturday around 10 am. I had a vaginal birth.
It's not like I got any rest in the hospital. They were always checking me or my roomate. And they start the morning activities at like 6 or 7 in the morning! They were brining me breakfast at 7!

For me it wasn't long enough. Both times I had to leave without my dc. They were in the nicu.

Same for me! I developed a fever right before delivering (vaginally) so they had DS in the NICU for a week on antibiotics. I delivered on a Sunday @ 3:30am and because of the fever and developing high blood pressure after delivering, I didn't get discharged until Thursday afternoon, but DS didn't come home until Saturday morning. Leaving that hospital without DS was the worst day of my life.

Also, because I was EBF, I ended up just going back to the hospital the next morning @ 8am and staying there ALL DAY LONG so I could BF him every 3 hours and sleeping in between nursing sessions in a lounge chair in the main lobby. It was rough and it would have been nice if I could have just been discharged at the same time as DS so that I would at least have a bed to rest in between feedings.

Mine was just right since my babies were in the NICU

Had them on Monday at 2:10 PM via emergency c due to peeclampsia

Got sick that night and the next day due to either infection or after effects from preeclampsia

Stayed until Friday at 10PM. Baby 1 came home Monday night. Baby 2 came home Wednesday night

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

I was ready to leave! Delivered DS 3:25am on a Tuesday. Was supposed to be released Friday but then his jaundice was getting worse instead of better so we stayed until Saturday.

I wish we left Friday. The nurses were pizzing me off with formula and constantly giving him pacis against my wishes. Plus my roomate kept having massive amounts of people in the room. I'm talking like 6 people and one of her guests had an infant!! Chat Icon

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

Too long for me! I had a quick birth... lasted all of 2 hours... but he was born at 1am, after getting there at 10 pm. That was a Friday night I got there... Then I was there all day Saturday. The nurse told me that if I gave birth ONE hour earlier I would have been able to go home on Sunday. I was going NUTTY in there... I was lonely, they brought the baby in to me when it wasn't even time for him to eat...he was still sleeping... I couldn't WAIT to go home. So, early Sunday morn I BEGGED to go home...and sure enough, later that afternoon I did. I don't know WHAT I would have done if I needed to stay till Monday like they had wanted!

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

Too short, but it's my own fault. Insurance would've covered 5 days following my c/s but I chose to leave after 3. DS did NOT do well at night and everytime they brought him in from the nursery, he was SCREAMING b/c he was so hungry. I just wanted to be home with him next to me all night long. They wouldn't allow it in the hospital, so I begged to leave early and they let me. In hindsight, I should've stayed b/c my milk didn't come in for another 2 days and it was hel.l at home w/o a hospital bed to help me up/down out of bed. Chat Icon

Way too short!! Gave birth at 5:42pm on a sunday and went home tuesday morning at 10am. I had a very bad tear which it was hard for me to walk, sit, lay down or even stand. I could have used more time with pain killers Chat Icon
Plus i was at stony brook with a private room and room service, so that helped!!

to short..... but i say that cause it was 2 nights, and ds was in the nicu 10 days..... so it was a pain hurting from stitches and driving back and forth.

I had a scheduled c-section on a tuesday morning. I was adament about leaving Friday morning... I totally regret it. I could've really used one more day/night in the hospital.
