Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

Depends... I would've stayed another day and was allowed to b/c I had a c-section, but having a roommate made it tough. I just wanted to go home.

If I had a private room I would've stayed another night. LIJ was booked up that week DS was born and there was no private rooms available

With DD, I was admitted at 11am on Tuesday and had her at 11am on Wednesday. I went home on Friday afternoon. I felt it was just right since I had a somewhat traumatic v birth and issues with blood pressure afterward.

With DS, I was admitted at 7pm Monday, had him at 7am Tuesday and went home on Thursday. I felt great on Wednesday and wish I could've gone home but he needed the okay from the ped the next morning.

It was really short but I was happy to go home!
I gave birth 8PM Saturday and they kicked me out Monday morning. I had a vaginal birth.

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

I thought it was too long. But only because I couldn't sleep at all and ended up leaving the hospital both times exhausted.

With DD#1 had my c-section thurs and left sun, with DD#2 I had my c-section Friday and left mon. Both times I could have stayed one more day but decided not to.

Too short.

Went in Friday at noon.
Emergency c/s due to severe pre-eclampsia Saturday after 3pm.
Went home Wednesday afternoon.

But DS stayed behind in the NICU and I was still in a LOT of pain (probably because I was confined to a bed for 2 days after giving birth and didn't move around so by the time I DID try to move/stand, it was EXCRUCIATING).

I tried to stay longer, but they don't consider pain (or having your DC in the NICU) as a good enough reason for extra hospital stay.

Went in the hospital on Friday. Labored for 23 hours. Had DS on Sat. Was suppose to go home on Tuesday, but had to have a blood transfusion. So I went home on Wed. My insurance covers from the time the baby was born, not how long I was in the hospital before hand. If I was feeling better, I would have said that 3 days was fine...

i didn't want to spend the second night either time. im much more comfortable taking care of the baby in my own home. that said, even though i wanted to be home, i think it was the right amount of time. i just wish there were different rooms--with a more comfy chair or couch, and easier to use tv. i find my early weeks with the baby are spent sitting and nursing and watching tv

too short! I was checked in at 2 on Wednesday, had DD at 10 pm that night, didn't get into a room until 1 am, and was home on Friday before lunch. I feel like I got cheated. I wasn't even in the hospital for 48 hours. I feel like another night might have helped with BF, and recovery.

DH just wanted me and DD home though, so if it was up to him, it was perfect. He couldn't wait to have us home.

It was too short the first time only because the baby was in the hospital for a week after.

Too long the second time because I wanted to go home.

(the time was the same both times - 2 days)

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

too long, I was there the standard amount of time allowed after a vaginal birth.

I did nothing in the hospital that I couldnt do better in the comfort of my own home. Like just lay there and rest. In fact, I wouldve rested better at home, without the influx of visitors (mine or my roommates), nurses, orderlies, people in the hall. It was the least amount of rest I have ever had.

Next time, as long as there are no complications and we are both perfectly healthy, Im going to have us discharged 24 hours later.

Too short. I yearned for the days of yore where a vaginal delivery earned you 10 days in the hospital.....Chat Icon

I have to add though- I gave birth in MD where all rooms are private with wireless access and flat screen TVs. They even had "room service" rather than 3 meals a day with limited choices.Chat Icon

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

About right / a bit too long- we were ready to leave. Had DS friday night at 6:40pm and we were discharged Sunday afternoon. I wanted to leave Sunday morning. I was hooked up to an IV of magnsium for 24 hrs after the birth and had a tiny room. So I just wanted to be out of the hospital and back in the comfort of my own home.

The nurses and care were great but it was rough being there, I never really felt comfortable.

Mine was LONG - 6 1/2 days Chat Icon But that includeds the 20 hours of labor and i gave birth at 11:55pm but didnt get admitted until 3 am so that counted as my 1st day (I was already there for a day and half) then 5 more of recovery.

It was long but I felt like it was just right for me. I was ready to go but didnt feel pushed out.

With DS it was just right.
My water broke on Sunday, was induced, induction didn't take.
He was born at 3:55PM on Monday via C Section.
I had 5 nights total, came home the 6th day.

DD Waaaay to long! I was admitted for monitoring at 28/29 weeks.
She was born at 33 weeks at 5:43PM, again, on a Monday (repeat C)
I came home Friday.
Could NOT wait to get home, but, leaving her in the NICU for a month was extremely emotional.

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

Mine was great.. I went my insurance covered 4 overnights.. I went in on a Friday- early afternoon- and I came home Tuesday afternoon.

They asked me if I wanted to go home on Monday but that extra day made all the difference in how I felt!

I had a c-section and stayed for 2 nights, I think one more night would have been good for both of us.

Mine was just right - maybe a tad too long. I had my c-section on Tuesday evening and went home early Sat afternoon.
I was ready to be home and in my own bed!

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

I labored very long time too, almost 24 hours. I was in a lot of pain, and needed more rest, but I was dead bored when it was time to go and so happy to leave.

For me, it was perfect, but I had a private room and amazing nurses for the most part. (the nurse that taught me to BF was an idiot, but other than that ... )

Re: Hospital Stay After Birth---Too Long or Too Short?

I had the baby at 4 pm and stayed that night and the next night.
I woudln't have minded staying another night though- those were my LAST full nights of sleep for a VERY long time.
I woulnd't have minded hanging out there and resting another day.
