How do you explain death to a 4 y/o
I'm so sorry. Explain the situation as delicate as you can, Daddy went to heaven or is with the angels as someone else posted. Definitely seek some counseling for DS in the near future. It will help him overall with coping and sharing his feelings so nothing gets hidden.
They did this for my DH when he was a child and his mom died suddenly. He said it really helped him and was the best thing his grandmother did.
Again I'm so terribly sorry for you and your sons loss. My prayers are with you and your family.

Re: How do you explain death to a 4 y/o
I don't have any advice but just wanted to tell you how very sorry I am for your loss and your son's loss.
I would get a book about death and use it to explain to your son what happened with his dad. If you do a quick search on Amazon you can find several and pick one that you feel seems most appropriate.

Thank you everyone... I ordered a book off of Amazon and talked to my cousin who owns the funeral home we are waking him at. He said to just say he is in heaven and if he asks if he died or if he is dead, to just say yes... His granddaughter was almost 5 when her father past away and she didn't quite grasp what was going on but knew he was gone... I am going to contact our local church about councilors for both of us... I am trying to keep things totally normal for him... Keeping him on his routine.... Once again thank you for all your condolences. It means a lot

Re: How do you explain death to a 4 y/o
First, I am SO SO SO very sorry. I wish I had more words for you that could make this all better, but I dont. I am just so sorry.
As far as a loved one passing and a child. My one DC was five when they lost a grandparent. I told them that everyone has a special job from God while they are here on Earth (have a family so you could be born, etc) and when their special job is done, God takes them to Heaven to give them the most special job of all, to be your Guardian Angel. I told them that they will ALWAYS be with you, even though you cant see them, you can still always talk to them even though you cant hear them. And one day, you will get to see them again and talk to them but for right now, they are your special angel and tha is the most important job in the world.
Im so sorry.

How do you explain death to a 4 y/o
Oh my goodness. I am so sorry for your loss. I wish I had some answers.
My niece and nephew received some excellent bereavement services through Hospice Care Network's Child Bereavment program. Tey are based out of BayShore but also have a Nassau location. This organization got me through the passing of my father as well.
I will be praying for you and your family.

You sound like you're doing everything right...and being the best mommy! Just make sure you have someone to lean on, too. It's ok for you to need time for yourself right now, too. I can't imagine what you're going through.
