I am so so sorry for your loss.
I also have a 4 yo DS.
We recently had a few deaths in the family (not the level of closeness of yours) but we decided based on our intuition and what we read to go ahead and use the world "died." We didn't give details, just explained similar to what other posters said, how you can't see the person anymore, they're in heaven, etc.
Children don't have the life experience to know how final and devastating the word "death" really is, so it won't have the effect on them the way it does with us, which might make the conversation easier than you would think.
I would keep it simple, short, and yet honest.
Again I am so so sorry.

I know I already responded, but I saw my cousin post something on FB about a book she had read when she was a little girl and her grandpa died. It reminded me to get back to you here. It may help with the whole process...

My god, I am so sorry for your loss. I have a four year old DS too, and my heart and my head hurts for you and your son. I am also in the field-- please consider a professional to help him through this.
