those who live in countries with socialized healthcare and have had it for many decades, cannot be compared with implementing something so complex in a country with many times it's population.

Medicare / Medicaid are a cluster with miles upon miles of red tape, and only 44 million Americans are in those Gov't run programs. that's 1/6th of our population - of documented US citizens. this doesn't include the millions and millions of illegals.

Abundance of social programs are working out really well in CA

Do you not think its worth trying though? How can we continue to call ourselves the greatest nation in the world (I HATE this phrase but...) and not at least attempt to care for our citizens the way most westernized countries do?

how about the Gov't fix social security first, before embarking on another social program that will tax Americans into oblivion? Chat Icon

I think this is good idea but SS reform won't help citizens under 65. We should be taking care of all of our citizens not just the very young and very oldChat Icon

I've been paying into SS for over 20 years - what will I have to show for it when I am elligible? probably nothing. so now that my 401k is worthless, I have taken care of the older generation while I will be living in a box. not only will I have taken care of the older generation, but I will have taken care of illegals who are getting benfits!

so pardon me for being skeptical that the Gov't is going to "take care of me".

no thanks - I'll take care of myself. Chat Icon

your last line frightens me. Will you have enough assets to pay for your medical care when you're older and your living expenses without assistance? Do you think you really will never need assistance? Will you really be prepared to take care of yourself?

Re: how do you feel about a national sales tax on top of regular sales tax

I think it's naive to think that the money from a national sales tax is going to go solely and directly to a national health care system. If it did, then great. But it won't. Our corrupt lying deceptive government officials will find any excuse why that money needs to be applied to other things and then we'll have a permanent national sales tax with nothing to show for it except people who still don't have health care, except now they have even less money as well. Sorry if that sounds negative and cynical but our politicians have given us no reason to trust them. I would only support such a tax if the law instituting the tax tightly mandated where that money went and expressly stated that the tax becomes automatically null and void if the money was applied elsewhere.

why is that scary? I would be very happy to take care of myself. there is nothing wrong with that.

why is that so wrong? IMO, I think it's better than so many ppl in this country who have a sense of entitlement. me me me - what about me? what about my free care and education? Uncle Sam, you must take care of me.

but are you prepared to take care of everything without any gov't assistance? Will you be able to pay for your medical care when you are 65 and you have stopped working? Will you have enough to live on? Have you planned for that day?

I think saying you paying into SS and getting nothing out of it says me, me me..

it's nice to think that we can all take care of our own needs when the time comes but my medical care last year cost about $50,000. Will you have that when you are 65? Will you have that and more year over year? I think it's scary to think that we will have to have hundreds of thousands if not millions saved to take care of ourselves without gov't programs.

yes, these programs need attention but it's idealistic to think people will have that kind of money to take care of their basic health needs.

so paying into SS that is supposed to be available to me at retirement, and getting nothing becuase the Gov't can't manage it properly is 'me me me'?? i respectfully disagree.

wanting the Gov't to educate your kids and provide healthcare at the expense of others IS me me me.

I also think nationalizing healthcare will change the face of private insurance for the good. It will create competition.

I think a nationalized plan will cost insurance companies money. More money than they would lose if the had to lower their premiums to make it more affordable and insure folks they wouldn't ordinarily insure. Like another insurance company lowering premiums to attract new clients. They will have to change their business model to survive.
