How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?

I cannot begin to tell you how hot my daughters classroom is and was wondering if other parents feel the same way as me. It isn't even breathable, how do these children stand it and more than that, this has to affect their learning to some degree. Is it even "legal" to have it that warm in these classrooms, it had to be 100 degrees in there?!?

ETA: I'm a Teacher myself but my school is air conditioned which I know is not the "norm" but this is just RIDICULOUS!

It's hot
But there's a fan.

But it's only for a few weeks. And kids survive. We all did. :)

That said. I never understood why they don't hve AC.

I think it's harder on teachers than kids

Re: How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?

I've been in my classroom the last 3 days to set up and let me tell you, it is UNBEARABLE in there. I'm on the 4th floor, no a/c. I don't even know how it's legal to be that hot in a room. I'm just hoping it cools down by next week when the kids come in.

As a parent I would definitely make a stink about the temperature. It's impossible to learn in such a stifling environment. I'm sure the teachers feel that way too, but they can't do much about it. Definitely say something. Maybe if enough parents complain, they'll do something about it.

Im not at all trying to be snarky here-- and AC would be nice.. but growing up in NYC - we never had ac in class rooms in school and that's just how it was. There are plenty of occupations where people have to do physical labor in the heat outdoors and sometimes indoors without ac.

My youngest....unbearable. It's disgusting in there. I don't even know how they expect the kids to learn. To top it off, they have indoor recess because it's hot out. Um, it's hotter IN the school than outside. My DD told me today after school that they were getting an a/c. Who knows if that is true. They need it. The poor teachers! I had a/c growing up in the midwest.

My son has a/c in several of his classes so it's not too bad for him.

The rooms in the kids schools are air conditioned. My kids (like most others) are accustomed to AC and can't function if it's too hot. I would be complaining to the school, especially this week! It's been over 90 degrees.

Re: How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?

We have AC where I teach.
Growing up, in Maryland, if it reached 90 before noon, school closed. They all have AC now though.

Re: How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?

It was easily 90 in my classroom today. It was unbearable. We have a fan but it doesn't really do much. Our doors must be closed so no real airflow anyway. We kept giving them drinks but they were hot and sweaty and then got on hot buses with no ac to sit for 45 minutes since the routes are new.

This sounds like an OSHA violation to me. Aren't there laws about safe working environments in this day and age? It isn't 1901. To me, making a pregnant woman work in those conditions doesn't seem legal.

While you might not have had AC, my mom says back when we were little the schools asked parents if they could borrow fans. My mom said every year the parents brought in fans on the hottest days and the windows were wide open.

Honestly though children have no choice but to be in the classroom. As an adult you can choose your career. You know some jobs require weekends of holidays, other outside manual labor.

I was just going to say this exactly. They start in August so they need ac's. But I agree it must be unbearable.

I get what you're saying. I grew up in a house where you weren't allowed to turn on the AC unless you were about to pass out. I don't recall if we had AC at school, but I never remember feeling too hot.

When I say it is hot in my room, I mean like you sweat even if you're just sitting down. I was doing some light decorating in my room today and I literally felt beads of sweat dripping down my back and I never ever sweat like that: even when doing exercise.

Yes, there are plenty of professions that work in extreme heat- I've worked in some, but when you are trying to teach kids it's both physically and mentally exhausting when the temperatures reach over 90 degrees. Who can think straight when they're over-heated? Not me. I understand that AC is a luxury of sorts, but it shouldn't be unbearlbly hot in a classroom, it's just not right.

And please, I don't mean to sound like I'm attacking you, personally, this is just an issue that directly impacts my life and it really gets to me that so many teachers and students are forced to work and learn in these conditions.
