i dont have kids yet, but i can tell you that MY classroom is almost unbearable and some are even worse. only some of the rooms are air conditioned in my building.
it is really bad. i was wondering what the parents must think too. plus being just about 36 weeks pregnant, it isn't the best place for me either!
This sounds like an OSHA violation to me. Aren't there laws about safe working environments in this day and age? It isn't 1901. To me, making a pregnant woman work in those conditions doesn't seem legal.
Seriously. I wanted to look into this. How could it be legal to make anyone, let alone a pregnant woman, work in such conditions???

How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?
I feel worse for the teachers. I've been saying that I want a thermometer to track the temp in my room, because when I went outside I felt cool-it was easily 100 in my class. The kids just sit for the most part, and can wear comfy clothes-I have to be somewhat dressed up.
While I do have a few fans, they really don't do much, and I can't have them on when I teach or I lose my voice from screaming over them

I'm a teacher in NYC. No a.c.. And the doe sent a memo that all fans must be confiscated. Nice. So take a guess.
What? Why??
I believe it is because it could be dangerous to the kids, like they stick their fingers in it or hair gets caught, believe me there are kids that will walk right up on top of it and yes stick their fingers in it

How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?
We pay some of the highest property taxes in the country, with the majority going to schools, and the teachers and kids are forced to work and learn in such a terrible environment. It's actually really disgusting the more I think about it.

I agree. It infuriates me. We can't afford AC for a few weeks a year? Really?

Re: How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?
No AC, and Im fine with it. They will survive. Its just simply not cost effective to pay to install AC and pay for the electricity that running AC in all 14 schools in my district for what amounts to a need of only up to 6 weeks of the year.
At my school, all kids were given cold bottles of water, no running at recess, etc.
Its supposed to go back into the 70s the next few days.
I dont worry about it.

Re: How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?
My kids schools have CAC, I had AC in my schools growing up, and at home, I can't imagine it another way. I'm surprised how many schools don't have it, and people actually saying they don't turn it on at home, i can't see how that is a great environment for education, I'd be miserable.

How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?
I'm a teacher. Thankfully, I have an AC in my room.
On the flip side is the heat during the winter. Does any other teacher have this problem? Even on days that it's 40-50 degrees, the heat is way too high, and I sweat in a sweater and long pants. I've stopped buying heavy sweaters and turtlenecks because the heat in the winter. I can't stand the hot weather and this drives me crazy.

Not a teacher, but in the school a lot, and it's HOT in the winter too. They crank the heat up so high, it's insane. No wonder the kids are always sick. Germs just fester in there

Re: How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?
My dd came home with prickely heat today. Her face was beat red. I put a call into the school. They don't have ac in most classrooms. I even offered to buy one but they said they wouldn't be allowed to run it. This is ridiculous. Something needs to be done. In praying next week it's cooler but it looks like Tuesday will be in the 90's again.

My classroom thermometer was reading 88 degrees today.
My DDs too, and it's the first floor. It's not ok for me as a teacher or for the students. No one can focus, no one even pays attention. Useless waste of a day for so many. Yet, despite th obstacles and the piles of poop thrown at us, we always get it done I taught summer school one year in Long Beach HS. They have AC. The downside: windows don't open. So if the AC doesn't work or if the heat is too high in the winter you're dying.

Yes, it's a one-size-fits all system. We swelter on the third floor and all of the energy goes out the opened windows, along with the school taxes the poor residents pay.

Re: How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?
I am a teacher and it was VERY hot. I had the shades down so the sun wouldn't come in, 3 ceiling fans and a regular fan. I always have them keep water at their desks too.

Re: How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?
I don't know, I just feel like any public building not being ACed in this day and age is pretty much unheard of. I can't think of any other public place where there is no AC.
It's so antiquated, it's almost ridiculous.
We live in a modern society with modern conveniences. ..this is not a 3rd world country. The fact that our children and their teachers have to work and learn under these conditions is pretty ridiculous IMO.

Re: How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?
I had Open House last night (as a teacher) and I am lucky enough to have air conditioning. No other classes on my grade level have AC. One parent actually complained about the NOISE the air conditioner made.

Nope I'm hearing conflicting crap having to do with personal use (???) and our carbon footprint-I'll be making a whole body print when I pass out-I've been using fans for 13 years and no ones tried to stick a finger in-that's a management issue-no air circulation is a health issue

How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?
We did not have AC when I was a kid. Other countries do not have AC. Its for a few weeks at the most. We have all become so accustomed to modern conveniences we don't remember that very recently most places did not have AC and we were all fine.

I teach and my room gets close to 100 degrees easily. I have 2-3 fans to make it somewhat bearable.

My school is the opposite. In the winter, It's like a meat locker. They allegedly keep it at 67, but the thermometer in my room reads between 60-65. Many of my coworkers wear gloves and jackets...

How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?
My son's class is one of the only ones with AC in the school. I've been at the school the past two days for events and have come out DRIPPING with sweat.
Yes- when we were young there wasn't ac in schools either and we lived BUT, there wasn't as much AC anywhere... I think we were more accustomed to heat than kids today are - I know the heat has been harder on me since we've gotten central air.
I don't know how the teachers do it. One of the other k teachers in my kids school was telling some friends how the kids in my son's class are active with the AC while hers are quiet and tired because of the heat.
