I am mainly curious becasue I am always paranoid that I will never have enough saved. I figured an anonymous poll would be best since it is kind of personal information you are sharing!

I should say when I say saved...i just mean your checking/savings or money market accounts..not retirement.

I have no idea...

finances never played any role in whether or not we were going to TTC.

I like that! I wish I could just put that in the back of my mind and think if those 16 and pregnant girls can afford a baby that clearly i'll be fine since me and hubby have full time jobs! I am just such an analytical thinker..i could have a million dollars saved and still panic!

I'm the same way, but honestly, we wanted a family, and our age was really the most important factor in TTC.

Re: How much did you have saved when you conceived DC#1?

I chose over 35 K, but we were saving for a house too.

We bought the house about 1 month before DD was born, and our savings took a hit then. We started building it back up immediately though.

ETA: we weren't saving for the baby in particular, we were saving for the house and for life in general. We would have TTC without money in the bank and if we never TTC we still would have saved.

Same here. I knew I wanted a baby, and that was it. People who have a lot less than we do have babies all the time.

Re: How much did you have saved when you conceived DC#1?

I had 2 months salary saved because I knew that I wasn't going to get paid while on maternity so I needed to be able to cover my bills while I was out on maternity leave.

I know I have to keep reminding myself that there are always people in a worse position than yourself that somehow make it work! I feel mentally being prepared is far more important since it is quite different than wanting a puppy!

Not much - and we still do not. DH and I always agree "we don't have a lot of money, but we got love."

Its okay..totally dont blame you for not wanting to put specifics! (there are crazy people out there!)..I was just getting an idea!

I also know everyone's situations are completely different (depending on debt, loans, ect.)!

See I live in Pittsburgh (I am from NY)...so it also various by geographic location of how much you "need". I also already own a house so my savings are not necessarily saving for that.

Re: How much did you have saved when you conceived DC#1?

We didn't "save for the baby" at all.

Once I found out I was pregnant I figured out how much money I would need to cover the unpaid portion of my maternity leave and I saved up what I needed for that...and we managed just fine and adjusted our lifestyle to accommodate a child. That was the first pregnancy.

This time around I figured out that we'll (probably) be able to manage with 2 in day care based on their ages and basically just went for it because I'm the type who always manages somehow. I came to realize if I let money stand in the way of having a second child I'd always regret it.

Life has thrown us a few curveballs since I've gotten pregnant again and no matter what I had saved or planned, I wouldn't have been prepared for this.. but I thank God all the time that I'm going to have this baby despite the financial strain.

I do have a nice sized 401K and I put money into their 529's weekly....I do not need alot in the bank, I would LOVE to have it, but we make do Chat Icon

Same here. We had money saved, but it had nothing to do with deciding to have a baby. It was more for life in general, emergencies, etc.

Re: How much did you have saved when you conceived DC#1?

We had a little saved, but nothing to write home about. Actually money in the bank never entered my mind when it came to having kids. But I was very lucky to have a good job, as does DH, where we owned a home, had no debt and were living free! Chat Icon

I was able to become a SAHM without any major financial planning on our part since we were well supported on DH's salary.

The loss of my salary, just meant, no more shopping, expensive mojitos, weekends away, etc.

Now as a mom of almost three, I do own my own business which provides us supplimental income, but we still rely on DH to pay the bills. I am very wise about how I spend money, I clipped coupons and we are able to give our kids the things we want. We are by no means rich and right now do not really have much of a liquid savings, but our retirement accounts are well on their way as are college accounts for the kids.

PS....I live in OH, so it makes life much easier from a financial standpoint when it comes to mortgages, property taxes, etc.

Re: How much did you have saved when you conceived DC#1?

I conceieved #1 when I was 17 years old. I had a savings account with probably less than $1000. Now, obviously I would not suggest to anyone to do it quite that way, but I'm just sayin', we survived.

When we conceived #2, I'll say that we had more than the first option, but not by much. It wasn't saved for the baby either. It's really savings for the house that I'll probably never be able to afford years in the future. We're still chugging alone & our kids are still plenty taken care of.

It's nice to have money & it's nice to have that peace of mind when having kids, but money isn't everything. Chat Icon

Re: How much did you have saved when you conceived DC#1?

We never even thought about it. We wanted to start a family and we had both been settled into our jobs and make good money. Alot of our savings goes to fixing the house so even though we may have had money in savings--big chunks usually come out to do something on the house--I can't wait for the day it can just stay in sayings.

We can always find a reason that having a child at this moment isn't the right moment--in the end there may never be a right moment so if you want to have children and as you said you and your DH have good jobs--it will all work out in the end.
