Re: How much did you have saved when you conceived DC#1?

We had enough for me to stay home for 3 months (we started saving before we conceived to equal 3 months of my salary). We did this for both kids as we still needed my salary when I was on maternity leave.

I have no idea...

finances never played any role in whether or not we were going to TTC.

same here - any money we had in the bank at the time was going to a house...it wasn't b/c of TTC.

i chose 35k plus but we didnt factor that when TTC ... i dont know how families do it with minimal savings. I dont get maternity leave and watching our savings slowly dwindle while im home with DS is making me Chat Icon thankfully we will be able to put the money back into savings once I am working again. the stress of living paycheck to paycheck must be tough Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

lots of credit to those families! Chat Icon

DH (not me) is a big saver and very cautious. He wanted to have a year's worth of expenses saved before we started a family.

no idea..we didnt factor in finances when TTC. We did start saving alot when I became pregnant because we wanted me to stay home and needed to save for that.

Same here, and we still don't have much "savings" to speak of. Once I got pregnant, we started just being more aware of what we were spending and trying not to spend frivolously.

I'm the same way, but honestly, we wanted a family, and our age was really the most important factor in TTC.

ITA... If we waited to "save" for a baby I never would have had one... I was 32 when we started... we have money saved in general and an extrememly low mortgage and not alot of debt so we still save as we go..

We had a lot of savings, but it wasn't saved for the baby in particular.

Re: How much did you have saved when you conceived DC#1?

For us, finances played the most important role in TTC. We didn't try until we had money in the bank (about 50K) The reason for it was so I could SAH the first year. I'm glad we waited until we had the cash b/c I wouldn't trade this year off for anything!

Re: How much did you have saved when you conceived DC#1?

Saving is very important to both me and DH. We had over 40K in our savings, plus our retirement accounts and stocks. We never want to be in a position where we can't afford to provide our child with the basics. The only debt we have is our house and one car. Now that we have DS, we save even more, since we have an account for DS that we deposit regularly into. We have a 529 for him as well.

Re: How much did you have saved when you conceived DC#1?

I am not TTC yet..(but really really am getting anxious and want to start probably next summer but having a hard time holding off!).

See I am super paranoid about being financially okay before TTC. Right now, we have no credit card debt (never have). At 25 (hubby will be 27 in August) we bought a house in Pittsburgh, have 1 car loan (which will be completely paid off in 2012) and hubby has student loans (we just paid off my car and student loans). So all and all come 2012 we will be completely debt free aside from mortgage and school loans

We also have approx. 28K in savings and I still act like we are broke and paranoid that we cannot afford a child!

Someone please tell me we are fine!

the simple fact of the matter is this:

if you waited until everything in your life was absolutely perfect: money, success, car, home, etc...you would likely NEVER have children...because things will never be perfect.

We're always saving for something: house, car, vacation but we never put money aside specifically thinking it was for having a baby.

Re: How much did you have saved when you conceived DC#1?

I feel like the bottom of the barrel.

I had no money put aside. Heck I couldn't even pay of the debt I had when I got pregnant. I had two car payments and piles of bills. I was already living check to check.

I borrowed money to have my child. I literally took out a $22k consolidation loan and paid things off to have space left for her basics.

I still live check to check.

I'd love to pay off my debt and have a savings. Chat Icon

I have both cars paid off now and live in a modestly small home. One TV set, super slim on spending and I'm STILL struggling! Chat Icon

I can honestly say I would probably break down and lose my mind if I were to get pregnant again. There's just no way.

Re: How much did you have saved when you conceived DC#1?

For me, it would be "how much did you SPEND in order to have your baby." I spent ALOT-basically our whole savings, but we are fine. My kids get sale clothes and sometimes consignment or stuff off CL. My MIL is very generous with them as far as big toy purchases, and they eat almost all organic. I think we are doing fine. We have a plan in place saving for college and the day to day necessities.
