few weeks old and I cut his nail second time I did it. Just remember if you cut them it will bled a LOT...they dont clot like we do yet. Dont get scared, just apply pressure, and Im sure you will be fine!

Re: How old was your newborn when

The day we got home from the hospital so 4 days old. He had extremely long nails at birth (believe it or not, it was the first thing out of my mouth while he was on the table getting cleaned up after he was delivered - DH and the anesthesiologist thought I was nuts Chat Icon). He was clawing the crap out of himself so we really had no choice.

Re: How old was your newborn when

I'm so bad - I think I have cut his nails less than 5 times his entire life!!!

HOW do they know to hate getting their nails cut when they are infants????

Re: How old was your newborn when

I started cutting them when I saw she was cutting herself with them. I did cut her once... it was scary but they will be ok.

Re: How old was your newborn when

I started when she was a few weeks old. I have really great "Parents" brand clippers and I have yet to make her bleed (knock on wood!). I don't file because I have some sort of sensory thing and can't touch files (or microfiber couches!) without cringing Chat Icon

I never clipped just filed. I didn't start clipping until she was about 6 months old.

DD had long nails at birth so I had to cut her nails within the first week. I did it while she was sleeping and she never even flinched. I have that Parents nail clipper that the other poster mentioned. It has a great grip.

I've never used a file. I am more afraid of getting her skin in the file than I am the nail clipper.

Re: How old was your newborn when

A week or two. His nails grow fast and he scratches his face, so I have to do it at least once a week. I use the nail scissors. Other moms have told me I am nuts, but I use scissors on myself and I am more comfortable with the scissors than the clippers.

He would never sit still long enough for me to file Chat Icon

Re: How old was your newborn when

right away. I don't use the baby cutters, they are useless. I just cut them and I haven't got his skin yet.

Re: How old was your newborn when

My mom always bit them for her kids. when they are newborn the nails are so thin it's easy to do that. i've done it a few times.

This is very true. I started when DS was about 2 or 3 weeks old. I have cut him 2x. It will bleed alot, DS never even flinched though! I put a bandaid on and left it alone for a little bit because it took awhile to clot! And then 2 days later it was completely gone as if nothing happened!

I used a file for about 8 months. I was too chicken to use the clippers.
I do use the clippers now and DS actually likes having his nails cut.

The second we got home from the hospital.

I did cut him in the first month though...after I saw he lived through that, I wasn't nervous anymore.

During the first few months I filed them and sometimes I bit them off and then filed them. Now at 6 months my DH cuts them.
