How would you handle this scenario? (for those with more than 1 child)

You are coming home late at night, 11pm and both your 15mos old and your almost 5 year old are passed out, sound asleep in the car.

How would you get them both in the house?

Would you wake the older one and bring them both in together?

I was faced with this decision tonight, DH was not home. My DS' (almost 5) room is on the 1st floor, DD's is on the second. If I woke him he would have had a melt down and not walked in himself anyway so I locked the car, carried him in, put him in his bed and ran right back out for DD. Brought her up to bed, then came back down to cover DS and take off his shoes etc.

But I am curious about what others would do.

Same as you. I know it's not the "right" thing to do but I do it ALL of the time. My kids only nap in the car so they're almost always sleeping when I get home...day and night.

I have a 6 and a 2 year old. I take the baby first. I can't lift my 6 year old anymore. So, I carry in the baby and then I have to wake her- which usually is not pleasant!

If I lived in a private house with its own driveway or garage I would, without a doubt, do exactly what you did and not think twice about it!

I would leave one in the car and get the other settled. Depending on which one was easiest to get to sleep.

I would have taken them both in at the same time. Or I would have someone meet me at the house, my DH or my aunt and uncle.

I don't feel right about leaving the kids in the car alone. I'm very neurotic though.

I have a 22 month old & 11 month old & always do the same as you even if DH is home. He cannot get the boys out of the carseats without waking them.

I would have(and have plently of times) taken 1 in at a time, get them settled them go get the other child. i lock the door and i go as quickly as possible. My 1 year old is still in her infant seat, so usually i'll bring her in first, and actually bring the whole seat in and pretty much drop her at the inside of the door and then go out for my 2 year old.

i would have, and have done what you did.

i just lock the door...run into the house....put them in bed and run back for the other.

I have woken older DS to bring him in with the twins but that doesn't work out well either b/c he is tired/cranky and whiny and doesn't want to walk etc...

I would take my older one first, get him in his bed, then go back and get the younger one since he is more likely to wake up.

I do this all the time. Where do you people live that you are THAT paranoid Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm totally joking.

I lock the door and my block is so quiet noone ever passes us anyway. I don't think it's a big deal at all.

I take one in, lock the car door, and get back out to the car as fast as possible. I had to do this with 3 kids, although now I wake the older 2 and make them walk in with me. Unless it was a long car ride and they slept a long time, they will go right back to sleep.

1. either exactly what you did..

or

2. when the little one was still in infant carrier..take that one in..leave right inside front door then go back and get older..

but now that they are 3 and 2:

3. I take the older one in...lay her on the couch so I do not have to wake her...go back and get the 2 yr old..bring him all the way up to his crib..come back down and get the 3 yr old on the couch and carry up to her bed!

EXACT same thing. I sit for another LO that is only 6w older than my 13 month old. It's one at a time awake or asleep. I have auto start so I run the car with the keys out in my hand and the doors all locked and shuttle them one at a time. I also do this when I am unloading the car from grocery shopping. I unload the groceries to the kitchen table and then get the kiddies out. You gotta do what you gotta do!!!

I know 3 different people who have had vehicle fires while warming up/cooling down/running the car. 1 of these was at a convenience store while she ran in, 2 were in driveways.

You're better leaving the car OFF and doing the same thing with the shuttling/keys etc.

For the OP:

I have to park in the back, so I've had to do this before numerous times. I run in, open the back slider door (can't be opened from the outside) and shuttle in whichever kid I think will transition to bed easier, it just so happens that it is usually the 3yo.

I'd probably bring my older one in first, then the younger one.

Re: How would you handle this scenario? (for those with more than 1 child)

I have to transfer 2 in all the time, so if they are both sleeping, I take the youngest (2 years) first, turn off and lock the car, and come out for the older one (he's 4). I go as fast as I can as we all do, and I try to think that if something/someone were to come up to the car and try to take my older one out differently then the "mommy" way that I do, he would know to yell or call for me. :) Stinks to leave one, but if you're alone, you have to do it or wake them up. :)

I also have to do this all the time (DH travels quite a bit for work!). I have a garage so I pull in there, shut off the car and close the garage. I generally take the older one in and put him to bed. Then I get the baby. I always change the baby's diaper before putting him to bed so that takes longer.
If one is awake though, I will take that one in before the sleeping child...
