Re: I AM SO DONE!!!!!!!!!! I cannot look at one more disgusting house on LI
I also would like to say, there is no need to walk into a house that needs work and say wow all this needs to be done as soon as we move in.
Everything works out. Make the house clean first, add or update a bath if necessary but dont stress over old appliances or outdated kitchen. as long as the crap works youlll make do.
Yiu dotn have to furnish an entire house in 3 months take your time, live in it have fun.
I know everyone is different but dh and I didnt even hook up a phone or cable the fist 3 months because we had so much other crap to do, we didnt think the expense was necessary right away.
Also my kitchen has holes in the walls, mustard lineoleum wth a big rip and horrible yellow cracked counter tops but we dont have the coin right now to do it so we make do.
Not my ideal kitchen but the appliances work so thats fine...

I believe though what the OP was saying was that, for the $$$ people are asking for a house, you shouldn't have to do all that work. Of course unless you buy a custom built house, there is ALWAYS going to be a home improvement here of there that needs to be done. But when a seller is asking $500k for a house that needs total renovations....that's where the frustration comes in.

I would just like to add that it's not the house or the apartment that makes it a home...it's the people in it.

Okay, but that was in the past. We are in the here and now. What past generations did/bought is irrelevant to what the OP is saying.
What I mean by total renovations is that, it's disgusting to pay a half a million dollars for a house and have to - put a new kitchen in, redo bathrooms, pull up carpeting or refinish floors, paint...etc... the $$ all adds up and when you pay that kind of $$ you SHOULDN'T have to do major work.
DH and I live in NJ, and I can tell you that we were shown some crap for $500k+ and were shocked at the condition.
We were shown a house once for $699. Very nice house structurally, gorgeous in fact, BUT in order for it to be move in condition for US, there was at least another 80K worth of fix ups this house needed. The house eventually sold, and the people that bought it gutted the entire house, probably putting in close to another $120k into it.

I understand that, but I personally think just because the bathrooms are old and out of style doesnt mean they have to be redone right now. Thats my point, unfortunately many of us can not afford to buy new build homes. So we buy homes that people like us 50 years ago bought and fixed to their liking and the story goes on..
It is sad but to expect to much is poiintless in this era.

I think it came from the actual diamonds being rough fresh from the coal and needing to be polished.

Re: I AM SO DONE!!!!!!!!!! I cannot look at one more disgusting house on LI
Are you guys looking for a starter house? Or something to lige in for a while and try to save for a different house for later? That is whta we did. We live in Islandia-We have a 4 BD, 1.5 bath, with a fireplace. It's on a 1/3 of an acre. The house was in very good shape when we bought it. So far we have had to install a new water heater. We also did some cosmetic work. We have no basement but a garage and a huge shed. We paid 287k for this house. We have no children yet but we figure we still have 5-6 years after they are born to find a new place. This house is in CI school district which is nit the greatest. The neighborhood is great though. Everyone takes acre of their homes and minds their own business.
ETA we bought in 2004-I know there are still houses for sale here in the low 3's It's also a very convenient location

I agree with you... its these "not desirable" areas where the houses are more affordable. thats where we are going to be looking. We are going hopefully start a family within the next year or two, but like you said a kid wouldn't start school until 5 years after its born. So the district can do a lot of changing in those 5 years. OR you start off in that house, build some equity, save some money, and then you can buy a house in a different place.

I so agree especially knowing that you won't be putting yourself in alot of debts or even living paycheck to paycheck which is quite dangerous.

This approach might work for some, but not for others.
DH and I are an "older" couple. So we knew when we started looking that our must have list had to be pretty exact to what we purchased, because whatever house we bought was going to be the house we spend the rest of our lives in and grow our family. We never had any intention of buying a starter home and then moving on in 5-10 years.

Meaghan can I make a suggestion.. Please.............
Get married first, have a little fun time with your spouse, no one ever died from renting. Enjoy your time then pick up the house search again.
No need to stresssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss enjoy these days
Oh I will have a house by the time I get married. Im positive of it. It will be one of the bug infested horror stories you hear about, but it will be mine.
Im not stressing about it- when i complain about prices, its because im worried about what LI is going to look like in 15 years, bc all my friends are leaving! what will happen to our economy here? I think big picture (and I have a finance degree so I like economics and things like that)
i just think this thread got way out of hand, and its my fault too, but we all have our opinions! And if people dont like that we keep arguing over the same things over and over again - just dont contribute!
and Sasha - please post if you want to! 's for everyone!
