All true but can unvaccinated John affect vaccinated Mary? The answer is no. Correct me if i am wrong. As an aside, my mom and all her siblings had measles and were just fine. I bet many of our parents around here had it as children. I'm not anti vax, but I find the hype around measles extreme. The rate of death and complications is so low. I'm sure your kid had a greater chance of dying in an accident. Not saying, I'd want to contract it, but it isn't Ebola !
So I think the bigger picture of disease is what the public gets worked up about. Sure perhaps your children could contract it and be fine. But who did they contact while infectious? Did they infect a classmate that went to visit his grandma who just started chemo? Did he sneeze on a target shopping cart and a newly pregnant woman picked up that cart in the parking lot? Likelihood is that you will never find out so its hard to make that connection personal about the spread of disease when your own experience wasn't that bad.[/QUOTE. Good points. I know that an anti vax parent would argue from the other end. Ie, ''my child is vaccine injured / was never the same after their shot so you whose children are well cannot understand the personal connection I have to it. " Such a complex isSue.

Re: I have a (possibly dumb) question about vaccinations
Curious - are parents allowed to inquire and be informed if their children are in class with unvaccinated children? I know there are privacy disclosures but I'm wondering about this. Also there are very vocal anti- vaccination parents too. With some diseases making a comeback the dynamics must come into play of other parents being vocal

I don't believe this information can be shared. Most people who end up not vaxing at all do so under religious claims since I believe it is the only way to get around the rules about children being vaxed in order to attend school

I know that a medical professional cannot share the info, but I'm not sure if information shared WILLINGLY by the parent/guardian falls under HIPAA regulations. I don't believe a school is considered a covered entity. Either way, they could get around that by saying your child will be in classes with / exposed to other children who have not been vaccinated and not name the children, no protected information would be disseminated in that case.

I have a (possibly dumb) question about vaccinations
I could be wrong, but didn't we have to show our immunizations before we started school & be up to date with them? I just started DS in Pre School and I had to provide his immunization schedule before he started.
As a parent this makes me very very scared and very angry. Especially with #2 arriving soon. From what I understand it's scientifically proven that vaccinations DO NOT cause developmental delays or underlying issues.
What scientific research has been conducted to prove that these vaccinations cause autism, Aspergers etc?
I'm honestly asking because I never did delayed or opted out of vaccinations, so I never did the research.

I thought unvaccinated John could infect vaccinated Mary if she was not rendered 100% immune by her vaccination.
Isn't this true?
Yes, true AND even more true if your child has only had the first shot and not the booster.

The "research" that was shown to cause Autism has been completely debunked. In fact, the physician lost his medical license and was fined (I believe he was fined, I know for a fact he lost his license - he was a UK doctor). He admitted to having fabricated the entire thing. Do some children have allergic reactions to vaccines? Sure, but there are also children who have allergic reactions to foods, vitamins, antibiotics, tylenol, etc.

Exactly this! It drives me nuts when people like Jenny McCarthy add fuel to the fire; especially since all this "research" was false. Some people still run with it - which is what leads to panic and people making ill-informed choices.

I vaccinate but a lot of people dont vax, delay or hesitate to do so because of other reactions (NOT autism). encephalitis, seizures, so many different types of reactions. It has been set up by they supreme court that people cannot sue vax makers so people have to go through the vaers system. im not 100% sure of it, but there doesnt seem to be a real scientific method to tracking or reporting to specific reactions to specific vaccines. im personally in the camp of vaccines do more good than harm, but i can understand why people who have had bad personal experiences with vax reactions decide not to vax/select vax/delay etc.

I can speak for myself personally. After watching my DD have a rare and severe reaction to the 4th prevnar - 107 plus fever for two days, etx (you can look up my old post from the night it happened) - I feel like I couldn't live with myself if I gave her another shot. With the Grace of God she did not suffer any long term consequences however she could have easily from a fever this high. Is this common no- but now that this happened to her I realize she is for some reason susceptible to these rare life altering side effects from vaccines. These are not in my head, they are real actual risks and dangers as per the companies product inserts. There ARE kids who suffer severe life altering reactions to these shots that are worse than any of these diseases. It's a fact - read the insert in the vaccine from the company. I can live with myself becuse for my child the chances of contracting and suffering life altering effects are far lower than the risk from these shots. Can any parent honestly say if they witnessed their child go through this they wouldn't do the same or at the very least hesitate before vaccinating??? For what it's worth my first dc also suffered reactions to every shot but they were all within the realm of normal and thus he is fully vaccinated. Having a family member that died from a rare but real vaccine complication - I'm not about to take that chance with my child.
Eta: my doctor who witnessed the reaction is fully on board with the above.

im sorry to hear that. you're one of many stories ive heard. and you mention something really important- read the product insert- potential reactions are listed there. i was watching cnn the other night and a doctor was saying how there was no proof that these supposed reactions occur. it's right on the insert! are they common reactions? no, but they still can happen.

I don't think there is any question that you have a valid reason to stop vaccinating. I would do the same.
My kids have not had a reaction to any shots, and I think on the whole they do far more good than harm, and are needed for the sake of the community. But of course there are individual instances where they can't be given. Your example even furthers the argument that vaccines are necessary for the community as a whole.

I have a (possibly dumb) question about vaccinations
My sister has a son with Autism and a few other medical issues. There are still PLENTY of world class doctors that believe vaccinations do cause these issues. She goes to conferences all over and sees/talks to different doctors from different states. She is very involved in the autism community and there is other research and respected doctors that still believe this. And like a pp said, it is also other things that people believe vaccinations casue that make them not want to give it to their children.
I dont really agree with my sister but she has done her research, gone to 100's of conferences and believes whole heartly what she believes AND what these doctors are telling her from their research and studies. So, I don't see her as someone who doesnt know what she is talking about or just blindly feels like she doesnt want to vaccinate.

And THIS is why others who CAN get vaccinated, need to. Because children like your daughter cannot. I have heard of children who are allergic to some component of the vaccine. They too, cannot be vaccinated. It goes back to herd immunity and eradicated diseases like measles and polio- with vaccines!

So she gets crucified without people understanding it's not always black and white

All true but can unvaccinated John affect vaccinated Mary? The answer is no.
That's the very point of this thread. Unvaccinated John CAN affect vaccinated Mary. Vaccines act differently in different people. Not everyone becomes 100% immune to the disease if they're vaccinated. So, if Mary's vaccine didn't fully immunize her, then she is susceptible to contracting the disease if she comes in contact with an infected John.
But part of what is missing from this, is that the VACCINATED John (as well as the unvaccinated John) can affect vaccinated Mary.

Re: I have a (possibly dumb) question about vaccinations
Posted by jessnbrian The HEPS & Chicken pox (though we all likely had chicken pox as children) are actually important pieces of the vaccinations. If you had chicken pox as a child you are severely at risk for developing shingles as an adult... have you ever met someone who had shingles? The pain does not usually just go away. If you have it in early adulthood and middle age, the pain goes away at the time, but when you become elderly, good gracious, you should see half of the shingles patients we see in our neurology practice... as it is neurological pain.
I have had 3 shingles outbreaks thus far. The research I have seen and read indicates that the reason there are so many outbreaks in adults is the varicella vaccine. Repeated adult exposure to chicken pox is a natural immune booster against shingles. The eradication of chicken pox via vaccine is causing the increase in shingles outbreaks. As for the shingles vaccine - it's made by the same company that manufactures the varicella vaccine. Coincidence???

Sorry, but I do not see this as a case of being anti vaccine or choosing not to. This is a medical reason why your child cannot get a vaccine, like someone who has an allergy to a component. They fall under the category of people who need herd immunity to cover them. I just don't see this as anti vaccinating, medical reasons (cancer, certain illnesses, allergies etc) are not choosing to not vaccinate, they cannot, putting them in a category with babies, immunosuppressed etc.
Etd to add btw I see everyone talks about dying from measles or whatever...but what about life altering complications. Off the top of my head I have one friend who is a rubella baby, and my grandfather became deaf at 3 from measles.

Wow three that is awful. I know many older adults that had shingles most I know do not get the shingles vaccine.
But no I don't think it is strange or a coincidence that CP and shingles are manufactured by the same company since the two are directly related.

I'm just saying that there are public figures that are speaking about things that they do not have the medical background to back up. My question with the people who have direct personal experience with vaccines supposedly causing autism is how do they know that their child would not have been on the spectrum if they had chosen not to vaccinate? Meaning if they didn't vaccinate and still had a child on the spectrum, what would they believe is to blame then? Not trying to start an argument or anything, just saying that I think that people look for something to blame and vaccines seems like the easy choice since there has been noise about it.
