Re: I JUST GOT LAID OFF!
if the lateness issue is due to your pregnancy and you can get doctor records, and there was no prior warning
you have a case on your hands

Re: I JUST GOT LAID OFF!
Stepping in from an HR standpoint, I agree. I would have to say that this seems very fishy due to the timing. It MAY be a case of pregnancy discrimination.
The pregnancy discrimination act was ammended into Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to protect women from discrimination related to pregnancy, childbirth, or medical related issues. Now, if you were having a problem making it to work on time, and did not have medical documenation indicating the need to be late, then they probably will be able to defend the termination decision. Nevertheless, that wouldn't say that they didn't lay you off due to your pregnancy, it just means that if a case was brought against them, they could probably defend themselves to show that they did it for other reasons.
However, employers cannot choose NOT to hire you on the sole basis of your being pregnant. Does it happen realistically, yes. Is it legal, no. I would still get out there and apply in the meantime. So sorry that this happened to you. Hopefully you can find something soon!
ETA: If you can have a doctor provide medical documentation certifying your lateness was due to your pregnancy, than you may be able to fight this.

Re: I JUST GOT LAID OFF!
Well, I dont think so because there was prior warning due to the fact that my grandfather was very sick, and then passed away, and I had to deal with all of that, and take days off, come in late, leave early... ugh....

Yes I agree .If there was no prior warnings and it was due to your m/s and you have a DR. backing, you should definately look into your legal options.

Re: I JUST GOT LAID OFF!
WHOA... wait one minute. You told them you were pregnant and exactly ONE day later they fired you? Even if tardiness is an issue, the timing itself SMACKS of pregnancy discrimination. I would, at the very least, hire a local attorney and have him draft a threatening letter indicating that you will sue unless you are provided with reinstatement, or, in the alternative, severance for at least 6 months. It should only cost a few hundred to have someone draft something like that for you - I've done it in the past, and have been quite successful.

Maybe I will do that.... I honestly would not want reinstatment... cause that would be embarrasing I think... anyone know of a lawyer I could contact?

I practice out of PA so I don't know any NY attorneys, but I would try to find someone who specializes in labor and employment.

Thats insane, you tell them you are pregnant, and the NEXT DAY they fire you?? Something is definitely wrong with that! I agree with the other girls - get a lawyer!

First off Congratulations
Secondly, I would take the advice of some on the boards and take some kind of action against your company...the whole thing smells fishy!
