Would you opt to get laid off if you could?
if you were not happy at your job and found out that your company was doing a layoff... and that you would be able to add yourself to the list, would you?
(this would qualify you for a decent severance package and unemployment)

There have been worries about layoffs for me. I haven't been there long enough for a comp package so I'd have to start looking right away

If i was unhappy then I'd definitely would add myself to the list. I would also look for something so it would coincide with my layoff.

YES
even though I got fired- it has been the best thing that has happened to me
I got a nice little bit of money from them- and now unemployment checks
I am in the process of making a total career change- my skin is totally clear, I haven't gotten a stomach ach in over a week- and some other issues that are def TMI have gone away also- I have never felt better
it's amazing what stress and unhappiness does to you physically
and we can go to lunch and finally meet!

I did this but was then out of work for 10 months. Severance only lasted so long and unemployment was a HUGE difference from my salary.

At my last job they had restructured the entire company, laid off almost every person I knew. I hated being there and was hoping to get laid off so I could get a severence package. Of course they decided to keep me so after a year I just quit on my own and am soooo much happier. I say if you are unhappy and have the opportuninty for a severence package and can collect unemployment definitely go for it!

It depends on your financial situation. As you know you would be taking a risk since severance only lasts a certain amount of time and unemployment is usually less than your typical salary check. You have to be prepared for the worst (it could take longer than anticipated to find a job) but hope for the best.
Also, I don't know what field you are in but maybe you could call some recruiters and see what they tell you about job availability. If the job market is good than you may not have any problem finding a new job. But it they tell you otherwise you may want to think it over before you make any decisions.

I wouldn't do it because I would be afraid of not being able to find another job. If it isn't your choice, it is out of your hands, but given the choice I would always pick having a job over not having a job. I've been in situations where I have hated jobs, but I always stuck it out until I found another.

Yes!!! I was at my last job for almost 8 years, I knew there was going to be a layoff, so I just held out and received a NICE package! In addition, I already had another job lined up to start two weeks after my last day at my old job, so I was getting a double paycheck for a while until I got my severance pay.
It was NICE!
