I know there have been a lot of smoking posts
But for the people that have quit, how did you do it?
When I quit years ago, I did it cold turkey. What worked for you?

I did it cold turkey also.
I came home from a vacation one year...lost all my desire to smoke and never had another cigarette again.
I have been smoke free for over 13 years

For DH, he tried hypnosis (lasted 3 months), the patch (gave him crazy nightmares) and the gum.
At almost 4 months smoke free, what got him was getting the stomach virus in December. He was sick for 4 days and no cigarettes. When he got better, he just continued the gum.

i stopped buying cigarettes.
i would still bum them from friends, but after a month or so they started to taste gross (probably b/c they weren't the ones i was used to smoking).
so on 9/25/05 i quit cold turkey.

I was never a HEAVY smoker but this is what I did.
Every day I could start smoking an hour later and had to cut one cigarette out of my day. So let's say Day One I couldn't smoke until after 9AM and no more than 10 cigarettes. Once I got used to that I pushed it to 10AM and 9 cigarettes. I got stuck on that last cigarette for a while, right before bed but then eventually gave that up too!

I was more a social smoker - only 2 or 3 cigarettes a day but if i went out it was closer to half a pack. I would go out 2-3 times a week. My husband and I decided that we would quit when we got back from our honeymoon. After we returned we went out with friends and I had two halves of a cigarette. after a few weeks without smoking I couldn't even get thru a whole cigarette. Now 2.5 years later I have very little desire. Ironically, I did crave cigarettes while I was pregnant but I would NEVER!!!!

I quit cold turkey 3 years ago. I was still bumming one probably once a month, but those days are gone now!

We have prescribed Chantix for some of our lifelong smoker patients, they have had great results.

This is a great post. My goal is to quit by the end of them month so any advice would be great. I have tried to quit two times and it has not worked for me. (I used the patches).

how much do you smoke?
i think that the more you smoke, the more help you might need quitting.
but i swear by my method.
i just stopped buying them.
and since i am who i am, i felt guilty always bumming cigarettes off of people, so that helped me cut down a lot too.
but i never smoked more than a pack a day - and usually only 1/2 pack a day - so i didn't really need stronger methods to quit.

Cold Turkey (I was starting IVF so it was incentive)....for DH the patch, the gum, hypnosis, eating everything in the fridge, whining like a little girl, etc. but he's smoke free for almost two years Whatever works!

I used the patch and a lot of Cherry Trident.
ETA: Sad but I also stopped going to bars with all my friends that smoked. At that time you could still smoke at bars.

I am actually smoke free now for 23 days now and I am using the patch and so far it is working great!
Mind you I was a pack a day smoker for 14 years and never went 24 hours without a cigarette until 23 days ago!

Cold turkey - my pulmonologist put a serious scare on me 4 years ago & I quit that day. I met my dh a month later & he's very anti-smoking so he was my motivation to stay off of them when I was weak

I quit as soon as my pregnancy test came back +. I miss it so much (yes, crazy I know) I can smoke a cigarette right now. I had one a couple of weeks ago and it was AWESOME! It is a daily battle and I hope I can keep it up. I am smoke free since May 18,2008.

I was about a 1/2 pack per day smoker - for about 2 weeks I cut down to about 5 cigarettes per day, stopped smoking in my car, etc. After that I just stopped.
