Re: I know there have been a lot of smoking posts
I first dwindled down from a pack a day to 3 or 4 a day. To kick those last few cigs I went on Zyban and it worked great for me. I have been smoke free for about a year - quit end of April, 2008

Re: I know there have been a lot of smoking posts
I've quit a hundred different ways but the one that worked best was cold turkey. It's been 2 years now.

Re: I know there have been a lot of smoking posts
I had a minor heart attack at age 29. That cured me of smoking.
(I had tried to quit several times unsuccesssfully. That scared the shyte out of me enough to not even want to lookat another cigarette, never mind smoke.)
ETA: Smoke-free for 6 years this past February.

Re: I know there have been a lot of smoking posts
I went away on vacation for 5 days. I broke away form my everyday habits like driving to work, cig breaks, lunch break, driving home etc. I totally gave my body this time to detox from nicotine.
It totally worked for me. When I came home and was forced to do my regular routine it was not easy but I knew it was mind over matter and I was not going to let it get the best of me.
I loved driving and smoking, that was definitley my weakness. I could chain smoke listening to one good song after another. I told myself that there are millions of people who don't smoke and drive. I could be one of them, and I did.
I quit cold turkey 4 years ago.
I totally recommend leaving and breaking away from the everyday routine.
eta: I smoked a pack a day and more on weekends while socializing.

Re: I know there have been a lot of smoking posts
Bronchitis x3 and finally, walking pneumonia did it for me.
I never smoked when I was sick, because basically, I couldn't breathe! I also have asthma. So when I dealt with three months of bronchitis/pneumonia, I wasn't smoking much anyway, so I never went back. I kept a stale pack of cigarettes in my kitchen drawer for months. Each day I didn't reach for it, was a personal victory.
I was also given a pamphlet by my doctor that showed the physical changes your body goes through each day, month, year you are smoke free. That was great, and kept me on it, knowing if I had just one cigarette, I'd be back and square 1.
I took it one day at a time, not knowing if I was going to stick with it. I had smoked 1 to 2 packs a day for 10 years. I quit 11 years ago and although I do still have dreams where I'm smoking in them from time to time, I don't want them anymore.
The hand fixation was the last thing to go. I kept a rubber band around my wrist and play with it while I talked or was bored.
Good luck, you can do it!!!!

Re: I know there have been a lot of smoking posts
My old roommate did it similar to tilde, only more gradually - she stopped smoking 1 more cig every 6 mo. i.e. In Jan she smoked 8 (instead of 9) a day, in July she went to 7, the following Jan was 6,etc... and she let herself have more if she really needed - in the first 6 months she only oversmoked twice Eventually she was smoking even less and not when she usually would - social situations, in the car, etc. I think she's down to 2 a day now

Re: I know there have been a lot of smoking posts
I got a cold with a nasty cough. It really hurt to smoke, so I stopped for a few days. When I was feeling better, I thought about smoking, but decided I might as well not start again.
I had been thinking about it for awhile before this--it just did the trick for me.

Re: I know there have been a lot of smoking posts
I will never forget my last cigarette. It was 4/19/06 at around 11 PM. I reached for my pack of cigs and my lighter and saw that I only had one left. A wave of panic washed over me. I literally didn't know what to do. Should I smoke the whole cig now and have nothing for the morning? Should I smoke half now and save half for my morning smoke? Should I forgo my last cig of the day to save an entire cigarette for the morning, but then again, I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep knowing there was one entire cigarette just sitting in its box ready to be smoked...
And then I snapped into some kind of clarity...these little white sticks were controlling my life, my mind and my body. They were controlling my money, my time, and the breath in my lungs. I decided I would smoke that last cigarette right then and there and never smoke another cigarette again. I lit it up and smoked it. I tired to enjoy my last smoke, but I couldn't...
I got the patch the next day and that helped tremendously. I didn't go through all of the steps though, I think I just did step 1 and a week or so of step 2 before I didn't need it anymore.
I am almost 3 years smoke free and it is the best decision I have ever made. I wish I would have done it sooner as I smoked for a long time and I can only imagine the irreversible damage I have done to my body.
I urge all of the smokers out there to give it a try and see if it works...you have nothing to lose!

Re: I know there have been a lot of smoking posts
I quit cold turkey.
I was getting 2 of my wisdom teeth pulled. When i had had the other 2 pulled, i didnt smoke for over a week b/c i didn't want to get a dry socket. So, since i knew i wouldn't smoke for at least a week afterwards, i decided to use that as my jumping off point. I had my last cigarette that morning on the way to the dentist.

I am actually smoke free now for 23 days now and I am using the patch and so far it is working great!
Mind you I was a pack a day smoker for 14 years and never went 24 hours without a cigarette until 23 days ago!
Keep it up!!!!
