Re: if you have your mom or MIL watch the baby during the week...
My father watches Lily during the week for us. He was retired, but doing a few odd jobs to bring in some additional income, and he had to give those up. So we pay him what he was making. It's cheaper than day care, and she really loves her grandpa!

Yes we do. She watches DD instead of having a job.

My mom watches DS up to three days per week, depending upon our schedules. We do not pay her, but buy her really nice presents for birthday, Christmas, Valentine's Day, etc. For Christmas we got her a dishwasher.

Re: if you have your mom or MIL watch the baby during the week...
My parents watch DD. Dad two days, Mom two days and one day together. Each of them gave up some working hours to watch her but they refuse money since they feel the reason they are doing it is partly to help us save money.
We started off providing food, diapers, wipes, and then my mom started buying it all on her own. I can't even do it.
We try to be generous with gifts and since we know that the thing they like most is spending quality time all together, we visit them for dinner a few times a week so that we can all be together. I know there are times when DH would rather relax at home but we know that it makes my parents happy and that is sort of payment.

My MIL watches DD 5x/week. She refuses to take any money from us. However, we compromised and give her money for the cab that she takes to and from our house daily to watch DD. So thats $5/each way.
