If your kid is too sick for school, he's too sick to be in daycare at gym. It's not just about infecting other kids. It's that your child can pick up a secondary infection & get worse.
It's common courtesy to other kids AND your child.
Such a shame. I would complain to management.

I see it no different than letting your kid go to daycare or to school with a cold.
I think there is a difference - school is generally required and people sometimes don't have other options for daycare and have to go to work so they are forced to take their child to daycare (I presume this because I see parents on here saying that who are working parents - I'm a SAHM).
There is no requirement to go and workout- it is a privilege not a requirement. It is nice to go and work out but if your child is sick - it isn't something that must be done and that parent is risking the health of others for something that is optional.
To me that is a selfish parent. Now having said that - the child "might" not be contagious and "might" be going to the pediatrician for say an ear infection recheck which could mean that although they might be snotty they might not be contagious. I know my DD gets a snotty nose from her allergies but that does not mean that she is contagious. But I believe the OP said that the older child was home sick from school that day which to me says that she is risking the health of other children.
hey, I agree with you all BUT I will tell you that I have been to plenty of open play places (as recently as this past weekend) and to the gym where I have seen countless kids sick.. should they have been there? probably not.. but parents go on with their routines and do what they want and how they see fit.. it doesn't make it right but I don't see it any different than when kids go to school or daycare with a cold or cough..

right but there is nothing you can do about it. you can bittcchhh allll day long and it wont matter. its unfortunate but true.
my kid has been sick since september because of other sick childnren at daycare. i get a call that he is sick so i pick him up. he's home for a day or two, better so i take him back. next week, same thing. over and over. this is the story with daycare, school, playgroups etc. its the nature of the beast.

Definitely complain to management.
My gym's daycare has a policy that no school aged children are allowed when school is in session- in order to prevent sick kids from coming in.
I guess they can't do much about the younger ones...my DD had the worst cold for weeks after the first few days in the daycare.

I do. Daycare or school is necessary. If you have to work, you have to work. Going to the gym is NOT. It's a luxury. Skip a day- it won't kill you.

She has to work out, urgh..she has to be a parent and take her kids the Dr. If the older child is too sick to go to school why on earth would she take him to a daycare. This sounds irresponsible and, inconsiderate!

I'm with you. I'd be annoyed. Unfortunately, there are a lot of selfish people in the world. I'd probably complain to management knowing that nothing would probably change but at least you get it off your chest. Does your gym have any rules in writing about this? Can they refuse to take a sick child?

Re: Im really mad right now!! Do you agree???
I have not gone to the gym since last Thursday because my DD was sick. While it is frustrating that I couldn't go, the health of my DD is more important. It would be selfish of me to put others at risk and possibly making DD worse. I understand keeping your DC out of school and daycare everyday is impossible. But taking a sick child to the gym is purely selfish of the parent. My gym does have a sign that says if your child is sick they may not enter. But it is rarely inforced. I have seen plenty of runny, crusty noses and hacking coughs. They even closed the babysitting for a day to get the carpets cleaned when a kid threw up!

Re: Im really mad right now!! Do you agree???
Don't you think it's wrong to send a child to school/daycare/gym daycare when they are sick? Why is it better to send them to daycare when you have to work. They are still sick and infecting other children. This is why doctor's always blame illness on daycare because irresponsible parents send their kids to school/daycare when they should be home getting over an illness that is contagious. That is very unfair to other parents.
I also totally agree that sending a kid (especially one home sick from school) to the gym daycare is ridiculous. The poor kid needs to be home in comfy pj's relaxing and getting better and again not infecting other kids so you can workout!

I agree with part of this. If they child is to sick for school they are to sick for the gym. I don't neccessaraly agree with the school/daycare issue. Kids get colds. If we had to miss work every time Emmy had a cold or a sniffle we would have been fired. It's just not feasable to take off every single time a child doesn't feel good. If the child is obviously sick taht's different. Emmy would go to daycare with the sniffles, a cough, or a runny clear nose. She had to. We told them up front what was going on and if they had a problem they would say so or call us to come gert here. They never did. That is just the life of a working parent. This is a different story though and this parent, IMHOP, was wrong.

I agree, I was referring to a sick, contagious child not a little sniffle or clear running nose or left over cough which can linger for weeks and weeks. I work part time and use daycare for my children 3 days a week, so I know what you are talking about.

For this reason I stopped bringing DS to the gym with me. I now go at 5 in the morning. I could not believe how many people brought their kids to the gym sick.

I stopped too. It was ridiculous. Honestly, whatever "me time" I gained at the gym was completely wiped out by the inevitable sleepless nights with a sick kid, the ped visits, etc. Not worth it!!

VERY different IMO. People have to go to work and don't always have relatives/friends who can step in at a moment's notice. Or they can't always take sick time themselves.
You do not have to work out however, that is optional. I would be annoyed about this also given the circumstances.

I'd be royally annoyed too and I probably would have just left. That mom has a lot of nerve IMO.
My question is does the gym have rules that kids must be healthy in order to use the babysitting service? I'd check that out and if not, suggest it to the management.

So then you think it's okay for me to bring my kid to school/daycare with a fever (held down by tylenol) because I HAVE to work and can't find any other childcare? And then infect several other kids with parents that also HAVE to work? This doesn't make any sense to me. If everyone kept their kids home and got them well then we would have a lot less sickness at daycare to begin with and we wouldn't have to keep taking days off of work.
Don't get me wrong, I understand your point about the gym being an optional activity and going to work not being optional but still a sick kid is a sick kid and parents need to have a back up plan for child care if they can't stay home from work when their child is actually sick and and needs to be home.

ITA. Part of the responsibility of being both a parent AND an employee is to have a back up plan for childcare. Giving Motrin first thing in the morning so that you won't get the inevitable phone call till lunchtime is NOT a back up plan, kwim? I totally understand that sniffles and coughs linger for weeks, and I send my DS to preschool under such conditions because he'd never go to school otherwise. But I think we can all agree that there is a huge difference between a kid with a lingering sniffle and an actively sick and contagious child, and a lot of parents seem to need a refresher course on that difference.

Holy crap! I wonder if we go to the same gym. I deal with a woman too that has her own set of rules with the same aged children. She does the EXACT same thing and MANY other things too that nobody else can get away with.

ITA. I would definitely say something to management about a sickness policy. I may have even made a comment to her as well on your way out, since you were both picking up the kids at the same time.

This makes me nuts!
The are little people. Why the hell would a sick little boy want to be sitting in a gym daycare and not home comfortable???
I bet when his mother is sick she lays on the couch maxing and relaxing...

If I kept DS home from daycare because he had a cold, he would've missed EVERYDAY since August 23rd with the exception of 2 weeks total! It's just a part of life.... I only keep DS home from daycare when he has a fever. Other than that, he goes - green boogies, cough, and all!
ETA: With that being said, a gym daycare is not a place for sick kids. Those kids should be kept home.

No, not ideal, but I CAN understand why a parent would do this if they have to go to work. Doing this to go to the gym makes no sense to me whatsoever. The original poster did not know what was wrong with this child, but he was sick enough to stay home from school, therefore, he should not be in a gym daycare.
Doesn't make it okay for working parents to bring actively sick children to school (I'm not talking about sniffles or a mild cough), but I'm saying I can understand that scenario. The OPs I can't understand at all.

Im actually not sure if there is anything posted Bout this, but now I will look!!!
This woman is just obsessed with the gym! She use to be much heavier. Im pretty sure they have her on a banner in the gym as a before and after example. A fee weeks ago she herself had strep. She came to the gym that day and went to the dr after. She was out the following day. She was back the day after that. I get she was contagious but relax you body lady!!!

That is the STUPIEST thing I ever heard! Our Y would never let the kids in child care with crusty noses so that wouldn't happen. I would definitely complain. If he is sick enough to be home from school, then he shouldn't be in child care. That is just SO rude.
