Insurance - child health plus?
I'm a single mom but not legally separated yet, or divorced but have a lawyer. In progess. About to get a new job. The insurance at new job is more money than what I'm paying now. I hear child health plus is good? Can I not get insurance through job and get this for them instead? With 'Obamacare' everyone need s insurance or you pay a fee right? Is 'obamacare' potentially cheaper than insurance thru job? Or can I pay for single fo, then get child plus for kids or am I obligated to get insurance for soon to be ex? I know someone who has "obamacare" and its very expensive for them.
Confused! ? Hope someone can help with these questions.

Ok, you have a lot of questions and I will try to answer them. There are 2 ways in which health insurance is expensive. The first, which is how I guess your work insurance will be, is high monthly premium payments. The other way is out of pocket expenses for services- deductibles, copays, coinsurance. Child health plus would likely be inexpensive and good coverage, but it is essentially a Medicaid HMO, and as such, not a lot of doctors accept it, and you have to qualify. I would try to sit down and look at the package the job insurance offers. I can tell you, for me, I'd rather spend a little more on a higher premium and not have to worry about a multi thousand dollar deductible - and trust me, doctors WILL collect that or send you to collections, even if the bill is for your child.

Also, child health plus would only be for your child, not for you. There is a tax levy if you do not have health coverage. But forget about that, kids are always getting sick or hurt, don't risk not having coverage for them.

Re: Insurance - child health plus?
My children had child health plus and I thought it was great. I asked their pediatrician which child health plus plans they accepted and chose one of them. I did not have an issue with specialists either. It is not only for people on Medicaid. Its a good option for people who are self employed or have high premiums through their employer.

This. My SIL is a single mom and only has coverage for herself through her job (and even that is super expensive). She qualified for Child Health Plus and spoke to her kids pediatrician. She said the insurance is great, covers a lot. My nephew had surgery on his shoulder at the Hospital for Special Surgery with a top orthopedist through child health plus. It is only for children though.

How does a child qualify for this? Does it depend on home income or if the only other available plan is expensive or not?

Child Health Plus is excellent: we had it for years for both kids while both of us were freelancing. Not every doctor will take it, but many do and everything is covered.

Re: Insurance - child health plus?
We have child health plus for DS because DH & I don't have the option of getting insurance through our jobs. Even though we pay a lot for it, we are still treated as though we are on medicaid.
I know I shouldn't care what people think, but it is annoying to get the looks and comments from the staff that are judging me because I have nice things and then it appears that my son is on medicaid. I even had a doctor say that one of the medicines they wanted to prescribe for DS wasn't covered so he's going to have to search for an alternative. Like really, I'll pay for it out of pocket then, don't make the decision for me. He apologized and commented that he saw DS was on medicaid so he just assumed I didn't want the option. They don't understand how the pricing works I guess.
It does cover a lot so I guess I shouldn't complain. There aren't as many options for Dr's, but there are enough. I've never had an issue with any of the care DS has received.

Insurance - child health plus?
I apologize, I don't deal with peds much these days, but child health plus must have changed a lot, because only a few short years ago it WAS a Medicaid HMO for children.

I have to respectfully disagree . We had Child Health Plus for two years and all of the doctors we were already using also accepted it along with every single specialist involved with my son's procedure. We had a small monthly payment and no copays. It was the best insurance I ever had.
Eta I hadnt read your reply when I posted, but for a time reference we had this coverage in 2012 through part of 2014. No idea how it was before then or how it may have changed after. At our time it was not Medicaid. To get Medicaid you needed to earn less than maybe 28k a year and for child health plus you could earn up to 90 something.

It must have changed right before that. Because in 2010/2011 ish (and to this day) no doctor I worked for would accept it, unless they were already patients. They've also recently expanded the limits for Medicaid specifically when it comes to children. And back then, it was known as the Medicaid HMO for children. Clearly even for those of us who do this for a living, it still has that stigma.

I just want to make it clear that I have no problem with Medicaid, nor do I think it is a bad thing to be on it. From a doctors perspective, it is a very low reimbursement therefore that is why there is a stigma. Despite the changes in the last few years and increased reimbursement rates (certain commercial Oxford plans, for example, have lower rates).

people in my office signed up for it for their kids... and I heard they only applied using one persons income instead of both of the married couple.

I cannot confirm about the medical end but the dental plan requires a medicaid provider number so you must find a medicaid dentist in order for your children to be covered.

Not true, CHP comes with whatever Dental is offered through the plan you picked.
Example: CHP through Emblem is Healthplex Dental plan

Yeah, DS has a CHP plan and dental is through the provider, not medicaid. Not sure why there is so much misinformation out there.

Yeah and a stigma is pretty silly considering a family of four is eligible making close to 100k. You would think that people in this field would be more informed and not less. Obviously they need to better disseminate their information.

Ours was Healthplex. Had nothing to do with Medicaid. It's a great plan. We used it when DH was in between jobs from a layoff.
