Is a heparin shot mandatory after a c- section?
I tried to refuse the shot but she said it was absolutely mandatory.... Ive never heard of this before.

Yes it is. You are more prone post csection to develop a blood clot which is life threatening. You are lying down for a long period post surgery so blood tends to clot. If the clot reaches your lungs you're done.
Not just telling you this as a patient that has had a history of blood clots but as a nurse.

I don't think I received a heparin injection with my ds1. I am also a nurse and know that it is standard practice to receive heparin injections post surgical. But I have never heard of any post csection moms getting one.

At Winthrop where I worked in l&d we gave it either directly into the skin or added to the IV. If not heparin we would give lovenox

Absolutely...after surgery you are more prone to a blood clot. Heparin is a blood thinner. Also if you are worried about breast feeding and the medicine getting into the milk, don't worry. Heaprin and Lovenox do not pass into the milk!!

I didn't get a shot at North Shore. But I have no idea what was in my IV. No one mentioned Heparin to me.

Yes, it is VERY common. I don't know anyone who had a c-section who DIDN'T have it. I gave birth at LIJ and I had it.
Just ask them to give it to you on the fatty part of your arm, I bruised like a peach from it so bad. Also, make sure they switch arms for each dose.

I don't remember having this either and I've had 2 sections at 2 different hospitals. I guess it could have gone in my IV without my knowledge...

And I don't think that you are necessarily lying down longer post surgery. If you had drugs with a V birth you would be lying down til the drugs wore off....same with csection. My Dr had me up and moving asap.

Exactly, i just don't understand why this is a big deal. After any surgery they give you a blood thinner. No consent is needed b/c it is medically necessary so that you don't develop blood clots. I don't know but I prefer to have the blood thinner then to die from a clot.

I've had 2 csections at Winthrop and it was never mentioned... they must have just given it to me via IV.

Thanks for info everyone! I just had never heard of this before and didnt feel comfortable getting a shot of something i didnt know about. I also had complications with bleeding during my surgery so i was a bit reluctant to get a blood thinner.

I was on lovenox my whole pregnancy but when they gave it to me in the hospital they said it was standard post csection. I was able to administer it myself with the nurse supervising. Felt badass
