Re: Is it rude of me to ask people to remove their shoes when coming in my house ????

wow reading all these posts that say its rude to ask guests to take shoes off...I guess we are different up here in Canada! its weird when you walk in a house and someone says leave them on! you automatically take your shoes off when entering someones house kids or no kids!
I would be in shock if someone left their shoes on after entering my house, shoes are not worn inside often, maybe in the summer if you are just coming in for a second, but even ppl just coming in quick to use the washroom the shoes come off!
so no i dont think its rude at all to ask ppl to take shoes off, i think they should...but thats just me...

I would think its rude, and it woudl nmake me feel uncomfortable. I would have to agree wth a previous posters, why do you think people sock or bare feet are better or cleaner than their shoes??

I would just clean up after having company over if I felt the way you do.

I see all the post saying it's rude, but what specifically is rude about it and why do people have such a problem walking around in socks/stockings/barefoot?

At daycare they ask us to remove our shoes and I would never think twice about not doing it.

Anyway.....I dont' see the big deal either way, but I will say this, it rained the day of DS' baptism, we had th eparty in a tent outside, but people were coming into our house to use the bathroom and see DS' room. Needless to say, I was moping the kitchen, hall and bathroom floors after the party. As well as had to clean the carpet in DS' room.

I wouldn't say it's RUDE to ask that of people. I mean is it rude to ask someone to put their drink on a coaster? Is it rude to ask people not to smoke in your house? It's YOUR house.

People don't typically walk outside with just socks on or walk barefoot, so I really don't think their socks/barefeet are dirtier than their shoes. Maybe if they are wearing flip flops I guess.

See now I think THAT's rude..that your guests walked onto your carpet with wet/dirty feet. I guess I'm rude to think it's rude though Chat Icon

I agree. You may not have fresh out of the dryer clean socks, or fresh out of the shower clean feet, but you didn't accidentally step in mud or dog poop with your barefeet or socks. Chat Icon

This has been debated before.

I understand why people want to do this but I do find it rude, yes.

Ironically, I never ask people to do this and VERY OFTEN people take off their shoes anyway and sometimes THAT bothers me (depends on the person - like a contractor Chat Icon). I don't wanna see your stinky feet! Chat Icon

Also I have one friend that this is the policy in her house but it's because her DH is Swedish and it's customary there to do this...you just don't wear shoes in the house. I totally get that and it does not bother me to take off my shoes in her house. But anywhere else... well, sorry but this ain't Sweden! Chat Icon

Speaking of dog poop..someone walked on my rug and had it on their shoe. The same rug my DD crawls on. There is no shoe wearing in my place, they come off at the door Chat Icon

I always take my shoes off at someone's house and I expect no less from people when they come over to our place... maybe I am in the minority here, but I think it is rude when people dont take the shoes off...

I am not sure why people are getting so defensive. I PERSONALLY think it is rude to ask a guest to take off their shoes. Why? I guess if someone wants to take off their shoes, they will but to ask, or even worse, demand that they do so is rude to me. It is a personal pet peeve, that's all

BTW: The world's majority remove their shoes when entering another person's home. It's been a cultural norm for centuries. American and "the West" are actually in the minority when we keep our shoes on.

so true, I grew up in Poland and I have never heard a debate about it... it was something that you did when entering someone's home...

We don't wear shoes in our house either. If guests come over I do not ask them to remove their shoes, however, our den (completely separate room, no open floorplan) is the playroom and it has wall to wall carpeting (the only room of the house that does). DC's spend most of their day in there, roll all over the floor and put everything in their mouths.

If guests wish to enter the playroom they must remove their shoes. If they feel uncomfortable then they do not have to go in the playroom.

I was going to say that it is rude in most Asian culture NOT to remove your shoes before entering their home.

I don't ask my guest (I rather complusively clean) but I don't see anything wrong with it either.

No, I don't think it's rude. You have a child who crawls around the floors. And even if you didn't - it's your house and you have the right to ask guests to follow your rules.

We take our shoes off in our house and ask that people do the same. My daughter lays all over my floors and I don't need her laying on the floor where you have been standing with your shoes.

I would always take my shoes off in someone's house - esp if they have kids and would not be the least bit offended to do so.

Like I said, it is a personal pet peeve of mine, there is no right or wrong answer. I know that when I go to someones house, I DO NOT feel comfortable taking my shoes off.

we always ask guests to take there shoes off for the same reason...we also have hardwood floors and Jacob is crawling all them! Nobody has ever complained and seem to completely understand. If any of our guests insisted on no taking off there shoes, we wouldnt make a big deal out of it!

I feel the same. I just feel weird walking around barefoot in someone else's home....plus, what happens if you haven't had a pedicure recently? Talk about embarrasing! Chat Icon

The only one getting defensive is you. I was asking WHY people think it's rude aand have yet to see a reasonable explanation.

I don't find planning an outfit with a cute pair of shoes, showing up to someone's house and then being forced to remove said cute shoes AND lose 4 inches of height because of it especially comfortable either! Chat Icon

What if it's summer and I'm wearing open toe - now I have to walk around barefoot on your icky floors (your cat gets to track litter all over the floor and your dog walks around on the same floor after stepping in god knows what - for instance) exchanging foot sweat and what not with every other person walking around - ew Chat Icon

I'm playing devils advocate a little here. I do find it rude, but it really doesn't bother me THAT much.

I think a more polite way to do this is to have a pile of shoes at the door - that drops the hint. If the guest is comfortable taking their shoes off, then they will. Chat Icon
