I think they should use average and plus sized models, but give the woman some dignity! She looks terrible in that outfit and you can see she's an attractive woman. I'm not saying she needs to be completely covered up in clothing, but they could show off her assets rather than her flaws, IMHO, of course Chat Icon

I couldn't agree more with your statement.

I agree also!!

the outfit is HORRIBLE no matter what your size is...Chat Icon

I miss the days when Cindy, Claudia, Linda, etc. walked the runways. Chat Icon Although they weren't "average" in size, they definitely had more curves.

One of my favorite fashion shows was when Betsey Johnson used Playboy Playmates!!! Chat Icon Although most paid for their "assets", the women were much curvier/thicker. Chat Icon

As for JPG's reasoning, I think it was a big FU. Looks to me he was trying to show that a plus-size woman isn't as appealing on the runway as the skinny models. (And he obviously exagerrated his statement by using a larger model instead of an average sized model.)

I was also wondering if that was his point...I don't know much about him so I don't know what to make of it all.

I think it's great that he did that...but like others have mentioned - he should have used all sizes throughout the show - not just one plus size model. The outfit IMHO looks terrible on her though.

this is what i was thinking as well.

i dont think that he was trying to 'respond to the need for diversity on the runways'... but rather, making his point of why he thinks it should stay the way it is.

besides- was there any lingerie in the rest of his show? Chat Icon

I don't know much about the man's views, but the mere fact that he only used 1 larger model as opposed to several only shows me that his intent wasn't to have it viewed as a positive thing.

I have to say this was my first thought as well after seeing the photo.

I think its nice that he did this and tried to make a point. But Im sure his next show and everyone elses willl have the same old size 0 models. This wont last.

Re: Jean Paul Gaultier Responds to 0-sized Models

he's being an azzhole with this. it is not the "good" intention some people think it is.

if so, he would have went with a "plus size" model like Mia Tyler (I think that's her name)

he thinks it will "disgust" people and they will get off the whole weight "thing" I hope it blows up right in his face.

I also think this is what he was going for. I don't know much about fashion at all, but my first reaction is that he is doing this to show why they use very thin models.

There was something in the NYT magazine or fashion section not long ago where a designer was using a larger sized model - maybe it was him - but she looked fantastic and was modeling clothing that looked good on her.

That seems more plausible.

In the background of that shot there were other outfits that would have looked flattering on that model.

While I commend him for taking a stand, it feels like he is singling her out and if I was in her shoes, I would feel ridiculized.

That's why I was hoping he wasn't making a statement...I can't imagine how she would feel if she knew she was being used to prove a point.

Based on this one photo it appears that she's the only plus-sized model AND the only on in lingerie (or whatever you want to call that get-up). Chat Icon

I do not believe she is a size 20 -- she is larger than that.

I think he should have used an average sized woman. The average american woman is a size 12. Use that. Not an obessly overweight woman. That's just pushing it. She is not the norm either.

But you know what... There are people who are a size 20 As a "obessly overweight person" a size 12 DOES nothing for me!!!! and PISSES ME OFF WHEN THEY CALL GIRL'S WHO ARE SIZE 12 AND MODELS "PLUS SIZE" THEY ARENT!!!!!!!

I would imagine she knew his intention.

Re: Jean Paul Gaultier Responds to 0-sized Models

what i think is sh!tty is that a poster got BLASTED last week for giving her opinion on an overweight person she saw at a supermarket (buying ridiculously unhealthy food items)...yet noone says anything about some of the comments/reactions on this thread to this plus size models' pic.
