Just got diagnosed with diabetes
My ob/gyn wanted me to have a full work up since we said we wanted to start TTCing and he wanted to make sure everything was okay. My glucose was extremely high, and he sent me for the 2 hr glucose test--and I couldn't even finish the test cause my glucose was off the charts before they could give me the drink. they called the doc who asked that they take more blood to do another test...and he just called me back....he's sure its diabetes and told me i need to make an appt. with my primary care physician immediately.
my brother, dad, and grandfather all had/have diabetes....looks like i'm the latest one in the family. man this is gonna suuuuuck.

Is is they type you can manage with diet and exercise or it the type that requires shots?

So sorry Melissa! It runs in my family - when my dad was diagnosed, he was on pills, but he completely changed his diet (which also helped him lose some weight) and now he's managing his diabetes without any meds. My grandma (his mom) on the other hand, is completely insulin dependent - so I'm sure that made him all the more aware etc.
I hope you're able to control it easily!!

Same thing with my dad--he was diagnosed -- took some meds for a week and then said "nope--this isn't for me" cause the meds were killing his stomach.
he lost 60 lbs and controls it thru diet. so i'm hoping i can do the same. its crazy cause i had been losing some pounds from going to the gym and stuff...and watching what i eat, and now i REALLY have to kick it up in high gear.
i'm just a little freaked reading all the info on pregnancy and diabetes. i really don't want to have to take meds at all!

Oh Melis....i am so, so, so truly sorry....
This may sound bad - but you CAUGHT IT...you got it before it got out of hand and you were dealing with consequences of it BEING out of hand...
I am in the same boat - everyone on my mom's side has it, my dad is borderline, etc.. I have Gestational Diabetes - which on TOP of my family BS gives me a 70-80% chance of developing it later in life..(add in my family history - there's NO chance i won't have it).
The good news... Things have come a long, long way. Insulin is NOT your only option anymore. My mom, for instance, was on insulin for years and now she takes a pill called, Glucophage (sp?) and is doing very well with it.
I won't lie - the finger pricks to check your sugar SUCK and HURT - but i have been told that insulin shots don't hurt at all. I did recently have to have a blood test done and those have ALWAYS hurt me...it didn't this time - i think because all the finger pricking has 'toughened me up'....(but i still hateit more than anything)...

You are very young, so with exercise and diet, you will be able to keep it under control, and I know people who were able to get rid of diabetes....

Oh Melissa I'm so sorry, do they think it's type 1 or 2? My dad had 2 and was able to regulate it after 2 years w/ diet and excersize.
If he can do it, anyone can do it, good luck

Yikes..sorry to hear this!
But...this is a condition that is easily controlled with meds and/or the right diet. You're already on the right track if you've been hitting the gym!
my mom had gestational diabetes with my brother..it happens..but again...can be controlled and my brother was a healthy baby!
