Re: LIRR buying a ticket question
You will be able to buy the ticket at a machine at the station. They will probably be located near the station house. It's definitely less expensive then buying one on the train.

Re: LIRR buying a ticket question
I think the new charge is $5 to buy it on the train. Def. buy it beforehand.
You can always pay a step up charge if you buy off peak and it is a peak train.

Re: LIRR buying a ticket question
Buy it at the machine.
Also another thing you may need to know:
I rarely take the LIRR anymore either, and have noticed, that the stations I use, if I need a Metrocard, I need to wait until I get to Penn to buy it because a lot of the machines at the LIRR station only sell the one that is $20.00.
Make sure you bring cash with you too, because I've run into the problem, when I got into Penn that none of the Metrocard vending machines accepted credit/debit cards (only cash because this feature was out of order) then I needed to go find and ATM plus pay a fee to use it.

Re: LIRR buying a ticket question
Always buy your ticket at a ticket window from a ticket clerk! If the office is closed, then use the machine. There is a $5 penalty charge for buying your ticket on the train.
I always try to use a human being when I buy a ticket. When all the stations are closed and we complain, it's our own fault for using the machines all the time.
