Locks are for honest people
I have a friend who believes this statement and refuses to lock her doors or windows and does not have an alarm. this is even when she goes away for a trip. she lives in a nice pocket of suffolk county but is only a few blocks away from a very bad area. what are your thoughts on this statement? she believes that if someone is going to get in they'll get in.

Re: Locks are for honest people
Putting theft aside, I'd be concerned about my own safety if my doors were unlocked all the time. Not everyone who enters a home unlawfully is there for the sole purpose of robbing the place.

Re: Locks are for honest people
If someone's going to rob me, i want to at least make them work for it- its the least they could do. I also think that it would buy more time to call the cops if you hear them outside. I grew up in Brooklyn though and never even considered the idea of Not locking a door- its still a foreign concept to me

Re: Locks are for honest people
If you noticed, a lot of those night-time break-ins were because they perpetrator entered through an open door or window.

Does she have nice stuff? If so, what's her address? I could use a nice HD T.V. JK
as for her statement - why is she making it so easy for people to steal from her? if thieves are searching for houses to target, they are going to choose her BECAUSE she doesn't lock her doors or have an alarm system, not IN SPITE of it.

Re: Locks are for honest people
I don't care what neighborhood someone lives in- I would never take chances and not lock my doors-I always lock doors-keep windows closed and locked-keep alarm on- and I live in a nice area of CT
Criminals are going to go to better areas to steal, No? Either way, I would never take the chance!

ITA! Epecially if she has kids. As soon as I walk through the door, I lock it behind me. As far as her neighborhood...the robbers don't go to the poor houses...they go tot he towns next door where they can get the good stuff!

Re: Locks are for honest people
i seriously do not understand that mentality---it just baffles me! my sister's cousin is like that...she lives in an okay neighborhood--and she too will NEVER EVER lock her doors AT ALL. even on vacation she's left her doors unlocked!!!! she has said that the day she feels like she has to "lock her doors" is the day that she should move away from her town.
she also jogs early in the morning--when the sun isn't even out yet by herself--and she's a petite, attractive woman--and i've told her 'aren't you ever worried?' and she's like "nope--i refuse to be afraid in my hometown." for me its not about being afraid of your neighbors--but the ppl who are coming to your area cause they know its a nice one.
and she has 3 kids too!

Re: Locks are for honest people
I have a friend who doesn't lock his home or car doors, either. It seems like a bad idea to me, but he thinks by locking his doors, he's putting negative energy into the universe, which will cause bad things (like break-ins) to happen. He also doesn't wear a seatbelt for this reason.

wow...... I'm all for having ideals.... but if you live in your ideals too much, reality will hit you in the face one day... quite hard.
I hope these people learn from other people's experiences, and won't continue to stubbornly tempt fate

Re: Locks are for honest people
She will feel differently if she has a gun pointed at her head. I live in a nice town in Suffolk and never thought my home would be robbed....let alone while I was in it!!!
Please tell her to reconsider, at least for her childrens sake.

Re: Locks are for honest people
I had my door locked & bolted & someone still broke in, so that part is true, but. . .because it was locked, and they had to force it open, I was able to tell that someone broke in & called the cops (and DH & my super!)before I went in , just in case they were still there. (They weren't.)
That alone is enough reason to lock your doors.

That's bizarre. Especially the seatbelt part. that's not a trust issue like locks--there could be ice, deer, mechanical problems, etc, that cause an accident, not just bad drivers. Well, I hope it works for him.

I don't know why but that just made me literally LOL. Whatever...people have some warped ways of seeing thngs.
I always lock my apt and car even though sometimes DH goes down to walk the dog and forgets to lock the door behind him. I don't care how nice of a neighborhood u live in burglars drive cars and usually target the nice areas anyway.

Re: Locks are for honest people
I would not want to sit idly by when an intruder invades my home and has the potential to do serious and life changing harm to people I care about.
Criminals do not know boundaries. They steal from rich people AND poor people. People who commit heinous acts of violence are NOT honest people. they are not good people. It would be a cold day in hell before I would leave my home and my family unprotected. This is carelessness IMO.
