If someone's going to rob me, i want to at least make them work for it- its the least they could do. I also think that it would buy more time to call the cops if you hear them outside. I grew up in Brooklyn though and never even considered the idea of Not locking a door- its still a foreign concept to me
Same here. I also grew up in Brooklyn and when I moved out here everyone teased me because I lock EVERYTHING, ALL the time (including my car doors before my passengers have gotten a chance to get out ). I even have the club for my car and that shield thing that goes over the wheel to prevent the airbag from being stolen. It's true, if someone is going to steal something, they are steal it but I'm not going to make it easy for them!

What do I think about the statement?
I think it's foolish & stupid.
But I hope for the sake of her children, she's right.

She doesn't live in the sticks...there is no good reason to leave your doors unlocked. I would be scared. I lock my door even if I'm sitting right there.

Re: Locks are for honest people
That is absolutely insane.
Why not leave your cash on your front doorstep also?
I am sorry but she has issues and is delusional.
Locks are for safety period.

If you noticed, a lot of those night-time break-ins were because they perpetrator entered through an open door or window.
ALmost ALWAYS the case. I read further and see she has children. OMG. That is even more insane.
NEWSFLASH - alarms, locks, etc do work. That is why the thieves try houses down the line on a block, to find that magically open door or window so they can make the least noise possible and make out with cash.
I have deadbolts, locks and safety locks and my window and I still worry. I don't even leave doors unlocked when I am awake. And I always leave safeties on my windows.
I hate to say it but she may learn the hard way one day. Why not deter thieves the most ways possible???????

She will feel differently if she has a gun pointed at her head. I live in a nice town in Suffolk and never thought my home would be robbed....let alone while I was in it!!!
Please tell her to reconsider, at least for her childrens sake.
Can I ask you how did this happen? How did they get in, an open door or window? Do you mind telling us more to educate us? Hope you are all ok, but I can only imagine how that could affect you afterwards. I would feel so violated.

Re: Locks are for honest people
If they want to get in, they will get in, but why make it easy for them. Why not give yourself that extra protection. The five minutes they spend breaking down your door or window is five extra minutes you have to call the police and to hide. I grew up in a bad area and our apartment was broken into several times, twice while we were in the house sleeping! It is such a horrible, violating feeling. To know that someone was in your home, going through your things and worst of all while you are there sleeping. I live in a really good area now, but I am so paranoid that I sleep with the nights on when DH is not home so that I can see everything that is going on. I keep my doors locked 24/7! She's crazy! Thieves are just as likely to rob a house in a good area, than they are in a worse area.

I have a friend who believes this statement and refuses to lock her doors or windows and does not have an alarm. this is even when she goes away for a trip. she lives in a nice pocket of suffolk county but is only a few blocks away from a very bad area. what are your thoughts on this statement? she believes that if someone is going to get in they'll get in.
I know someone who has this same way of thinking. Never locks his door. And I'll never understand it

Re: Locks are for honest people
We live in a nice area and a couple of weeks ago there was a robbery around the corner from our home during the middle of the day.
I am paranoid because our door isn't working that well and if you lean on it sometimes, even though it's shut/locked it opens!

I live in a very good area, and still lock my doors, windows and have an alarm. I also plan to get a shotgun. Why make it easy? Home invasions are no joke.

Re: Locks are for honest people
That is really naive. You would not BELIEVE how many people in the south leave their doors unlocked all the time, at night, while they're at work, etc. I live in a suburb of a mid sized city, it's no NYC but high on the list of crime in the US. I would NEVER leave my doors unlocked at night or when I'm not home, even w/2 German Shepherds and a gun. Maybe that's the NY in me (that's what they tell me) but I don't care. It's called SMART.

With the outbreak of home invasions around Long Island it is just plain foolish. These days anything can happen. Its quite a dangerous way to live..especially with children in the house..

Re: Locks are for honest people
I don't even understand that statement :locks are for honest people" what does that even mean?
Our doors are always locked AND bolted, day or night, out of the house or home. We always lock our cars too. i can NOT understand people who don't lock doors and windows.
I don't care how nice your area is..it's not like there's a forcefield that keeps criminals out of Scarsdale or something.

those poor kids!
i just find the whole "nicer neighborhood" thing humorous - yeah, cuz the criminals NEVER go there! they always rob the BAD neighborhoods - why would they go where people have money and nice things??
yikes.

I grew up in a town we referred to as Mayberry. We all knew each other, but we still locked our doors. She is asking for trouble IMO.

That statement doens't even make sense. Like, as in, structurally. Locks are for honest people? I don't get it.
