Mask wearing-why is it such a big deal?

Are they really THAT awful?

I’m not joking. I really want to know why people are SO resistant. I mean, yeah, i smell my own breath and it’s impeding upon my lipstick wearing. But I’m curious because others I know aren’t THAT bothered by them either. Vaccinated people too! I mean, I don’t LOVE them and it’s hard to hear others.

But I see things on Facebook about people ready to overthrow the government over masks.

So why?
Haven’t they been helpful?

Re: Mask wearing-why is it such a big deal?

Not ready to overthrow the government or anything that extreme, lol, but I really can't stand it.
I suffer from anxiety and a lot of times it's triggered by feeling like I can't get enough air.
So I have had many moments in stores where I have had to leave because I was spiraling with that mask over my face.
I got those mask brackets that go inside the mask to give you a little more room to breath and that helped somewhat.
But especially when it's warm in a store, or wherever I am- it gets really bad. I start having bad panic attacks and feel like I'm suffocating

It's a big deal to some because they have turned mask wearing around from something we do as a collective group to protect the public health to the government trying to control them and strip away their rights. Chat Icon

Thank you! I totally understand that! I’m sorry you have that experience. Anxiety sucks!

I understand exactly how you feel as I've experienced the same panic and anxiety being a severe claustrophobic. I hate the masks too even though I wore them as required. Unfortunately, I do think some people have made wearing masks a government control issue when it's never been more than a collective effort to protect the public health.

It's not, plain and simple. But like you said, so many have turned it into a huge political statement, which is ridiculous

The only time I really hate it is when its super hot out. If its cool out, I'm fine. In the winter it actually kept me warm, lol.

Side note, my college age daughter actually like it, considers it a fashion accessory now and has one to match just about everything she wears.

This is me. I hate it when it is hot out or stuffy in a room. I feel slightly claustrophobic, but I have gotten over that part of it. The N95s are more comfortable than the surgical masks for me.

I also get anxious when it’s hot and I have the mask on. I’m a shallow breather so it can easily cause anxiety. I still wear it while working out at the gym and everywhere else though.

I tell myself that I know I’m OK and this is nothing compared to what it would be like to have Covid or be in the hospital on oxygen.

Stores are the worst for me! I think it's a combination of the walking around, the mask, the lights, something over my face...the sensory aspect of it all! I'm totally fine sitting in a mask for hours though. It's weird. I have left stores a couple of times because of what you described though!

This I do agree with. This is ALL over every single internet group I'm in. It's insane what it's turned into.

My incoming 9th grader has no issues with the mask. My 22 year old autistic son wears one all day for his day program and in all of the businesses they attend to work at.

It's not to me. It's annoying and whatever but given the alternative I'll wear it.

Mask wearing-why is it such a big deal?

My mother is 81 and suffers from depression and anxiety and mask wearing has attributed to her needing to up her medication. She also has Rosacea which is a skin condition and mask wearing makes her face breakout.

My children are being forced to wear them because the vaccine is not available to them and they also hate wearing them. it is uncomfortable to wear something for 6 to 7 hours a day like a muzzle. My children would come home with a completely soaked mask from sweat and their own saliva which to me was pointless having one on. It is also hard to understand the teachers with one on and fellow students, which in turn causes anxiety and depression on the younger generations.

My DH and I do not like them either for all of the above reasons and do not believe in the"science" behind them.

Well they must have been doing something because every school year strep, stomach virus, flu, coxsackie are all rampant. Last school year, none of that.

I send my kids with extra masks to change after lunch so they aren't wearing the same nasty one all day.

I do too but the truth is, my kids and many other kids (especially younger ones) don't change thier masks.

I'm fine wearing it for short periods of time (which is all I have to do even though I think the likelhiood of catching Covid at Shop Rite is low) but, I don't feel kids should sit in hot classrooms wearing them all day.

I send them in with two masks. Both are disgusting at the end of the day. I will be getting super thin ones if they are forced to wear them again.

And i would love to know how this have effected our immune systems in the long run of not being able to be exposed to illnesses as we should be to build it up.

Exactly.

Furthermore, if masks didn't work to mitigate the spread of germs to some degree then doctors and nurses wouldn't be wearing them at all. I know that the times I've had surgery I appreciate the medical team being masked up instead of spewing their germs and spit all over me on the table while they work.

It's ridiculous to say, "masks don't work" because of course they do. Are they 100%? Absolutely not but it's ridiculous for anyone to argue that they offer no protection at all. There is a reason why they are standard protocol in the medical field, because they absolutely help to contain the spread of germs to some degree.

Then why do people who are wearing a mask care if Joe Schmoo next to them is not wearing one? Shouldn't their mask protect them regardless? You wouldn't be able to breath in anything through those homemade cotton masks right.

I have similar feelings, and also not ready to overthrow the government lol.

I also have anxiety issues connected to my breathing, and I have felt panicky due to the mask at points. I was recently in an Uber where they are required, and I started panicking, feeling like I couldn't breathe, and couldn't just get out since we were on a parkway.

I find that the masks create communication issues, particularly in the classroom. Being able to smile or show motivation and passion for the subject with facial expressions matters. Students' facial reactions to lessons also help me to gauge how to proceed with the material at times.

Also, I mean, I like breathing without a barrier in front of my face lol.

I don't think it is wrong to dislike masks and to look forward to the day when there are no more mask mandates. I absolutely think they helped with this pandemic. It is possible to both acknowledge their purpose and need but to hate wearing them.

Mask wearing-why is it such a big deal?

For myself, I’m an adult and can suck it up when required.

But my children….it’s terrible to expect them to be in a mask for 4-6 hours. Especially on a hot school bus. In a room with no air conditioning on hot days. I have a child with severe speech delay and this was a nightmare last year. The photos their teacher took, you can’t tell if your child is smiling or upset. It’s not right to have children sitting 3 feet apart at their desk in a mask. I can understand common areas but sitting by yourself is ridiculous.

These kids are losing social skills that are usually being taught now. My one child has never sat in a cafeteria and probably won’t this year. Sounds stupid to be upset, but this is all about social growth. Learning to speak and engage with peers, how to read social cues, etc.

Plus the grossness that was on their masks at the end of a hot humid day was nauseating
