I respect our men and women past, present and future who serve this country I really do. It's the politicians that use them like it's all a big game that i have a problem with.

No, I don't beleive we're "winning" any war, I don't believe we're eliminating any sort of terrorist threat - I believe I'm safe every day b/c there are men and women willing to risk their lives to serve their country and protect me - I believe in THEM - NOT the war they're being forced to fight and die a part of .......And I beleive that b/c I have many friends who have served in Iraq over the past few years ........I'm happy that your DH was there and feels good about it, that he made a difference - b/c most of my friends feel the exact opposite ..........
And I think Matt Damon's refrence to the whole dinosaur thing was sort of an -
Good you shouldn't believe it.
In 1978 the Soviet - Afghan war began and lasted 9 years. The United States helped arm and train the Afghanistan army. After all even though Afghanistan was not one of our allies they were fighting against our biggest enemy at the time, the Soviet Union.
The Afghans took the training we gave them and used it to train terrorists with the help of Bin Laden's money and attacked this country.
Now we are doing the same thing in Iraq. Don't be surprised when it happens again. Seems our government will never learn. As to the original question yeah Matt's entitled to his opinions just like the rest of us. EFS
Do you seriously think that if the U.S. and its allies had not ousted the Taliban and sustained an offensive against them for the last 6 yrs, that there wouldn't have been an attack on the West?
That's not what I said. I just stated historical fact. We have not learned from the past therefore we are doomed to repeat it. Our involvement in the middle east for the last 70 years has not done anything to improve our status over there. imo It's always been about who do we help that is in the best position to give us access to the oil period end of story.
I'm not saying that our soldiers are not doing a great job it's not about my attitude toward the military or any of it's personnel. It's about how our government lies to us over and over and over and nothing ever changes.
I respect our men and women past, present and future who serve this country I really do. It's the politicians that use them like it's all a big game that i have a problem with.
No actually you stated that we are losing. And i understand the whole doomed to repeat history mantra. However im optimistic about the future outcome over there

Of course you're optimistic, as we all should be. I mean it's not like this is the first time our politicians have gotten us into a war we had no business in Vietnam anyone?
Our politicians got us into a war because terrorists attacked our way of life over here. although i agree we should have spent more time in Afghanistan, we still are doing a lot of good in the region imo. and winning the war on terror

ok - so - we do what? sit idly by and wait for a genocidal dictator to get nukes? THANK GOD Israel bombed their nuclear reactors in 1981! the world today would be a very different place if they had not done that.
so they got some crap for it. like they care anyway. we owe them a huge debt of gratitude.
take a look at a progressive Arab nation like Dubai. look what GOOD things you can do with all your oil $$! they're flourishing! they can't build fast enough. the wealth in that country is unreal. the other countries in that area should follow in their example.

Re: Matt Damon on Sarah Palin
I'm not saying that celebs shouldn't voice their opinions, political or not, just like the rest of us. I'm just not a fan of celebs endorsing a certain politician and people voting because they are endorsed by a certain celeb. There are people out there who do silly things like that. To be honest, while I may not agree with him, I do have more respect for what he would say as opposed to others celebs would say. Personally I don't feel as though I would have a whole lot in common w/ someone who dropped out of school and makes zillions as far as what issues would be important. Matt Damon on the otherhand went to Harvard (granted he majored in theater), but at least he is educated. Yeah it's easy to say raise taxes...it really would not hurt them. Those of us struggling to pay our bills and make ends meet just can't afford it.
Sorry for the ramble...
I just got off of work after working 10 hours and don't believe I am making much sense

He's sooo ignorant. He said McCain had a 30% chance of dying, which is untrue. It is 10%. He's a sexist pig. Palin has more Executive experience than Obama.

Re: Matt Damon on Sarah Palin
ok=--I freely admit that I don't know much more about SP than Matt does, but those comments about her being a hockey mom are sexist and offensive--no matter who you're gonna vote for and whether or not you think she's qualified. So a mom can't have a great career-can't be prepared to take on challenges...is always reduced to a stereotype? Truth be told, we have 4 intelligent public servants running for office on different platforms and w/ different experiences, but Matt Damon needs to get over himself and stop making such sexist comments!

Sarah Palin made reference to herself being a "hockey mom," I'll bet before Matt Damon did. She has already identified herself as being one. She can use the stereotype to her advantage and when suited, but he can't call her the same thing she called herself?
This is her quote. "By the way, do you know what they say the difference is between a hockey mom and a Pit Bull?" "A hockey mom wears lipstick."

I have a vagina and ears.
I didn't find his comment sexist. though I am not a fan of pulling cards of any kind, ever.
as for Tommy2, the "WEST" has been attacked my man...just maybe not the US...London, Madrid????? it's not just US (U.S.)
all you need is a grenade belt and a dream. it can happen here again at ANY time.....
and Kevin made some great points about history. I PRAY TO GOD every day that THIS TIME we will get it right.
but I don't think McCain/Palin will get us there. we went in with guns...now we need diplomacy. we need connection with the people on the ground...just like YOU connected with them, and my brother and all of the other men and women with their BOOTS on the ground...their ASSES on the line.
WE OWE YOU...WE OWE THEM...not to repeat the sins of our fathers...and keeping a miltary force in the country does not in any way guarantee they are our allies...it just means we can watch them better.
do you want their fear or do you want their trust? fear NEVER breeds love...but trust DOES.

Obama.... although a Harvard grad he has admitted to using cocaine (so much for being a smart man)
This is really a moot point. Let's keep in mind that Bill Clinton openly admitted to smoking pot.
He's also the ONLY president in a LONG, LONG TIME to leave the federal reserve in the black!!!!!!!
So, I will take a HUMAN candidate who can bring our troops home from a pointless war and maybe get us out of our multi-trillion dollar deficit, thankyouverymuch.
Yes really-do you knwo how many people got through med or law school using cocaine? Its very naive to think that a pucblic figure has never used drugs or alchool....Now I am not a fan of cocaine at all but I know it has been used widely

I don't think we will ever win the war on terror. Remember, there are countless children over there who lost parents, families, friends...essentially, those children lost reason...those children will grow up and I don't think anyone can say, with honesty, that the cycle of terror was broken.

Honestly, I don't know as much as I should about Palin. However, what do you honestly think is the reason he chose her for VP? I mean, nobody's heard of her, I've read McCain's met her once. It sounds more like he's trying to use her to get the attention put on the Republican party. Not a smart way to go, IMO. As for Damon, I think everyone has the right to voice their opinion. He just happens to be in the spotlight, and knows he'll be heard more.

I agree- that's exactly why McCain chose Palin- for the attention- he wants her to bring in the votes. But that is why virtually every single VP candidate has ever been chosen, to bring in the votes of a constituency that wouldn't automatically vote for the Pres. candidate. This is common practice in presidential campaigns. So I wouldn't attack McCain for doing exactly what Obama did in choosing Biden. Exactly what Lincoln did in choosing Johnson. Exactly what Kennedy did in choosing LBJ.
As for Matt Damon, if he is questioned about his political beliefs, he certainly is entitled to speak up- regardless of how offensive it may be to some people. It's hard to be "polite" when discussing political beliefs that you feel very passionate about. The fact that he is repeating misinformation about Palin just makes him look stupid, and unfortunately, he is contributing to the false rumors in the media about her. But conservatives in this country, while certainly not as famous, have been doing the exact same thing about Obama- he's Muslim, he's an extremist, I even heard an internet rumor that he is reportedly the "Manchurian Candidate" who will work with terrorists to overthrow democracy once in power (or something ridiculous like that). It's a presidential election, a really important one, and this stuff happens unfortunately. As I follow this campaign closely on a daily basis, it all makes me a bit sick to my stomach. I do look forward to the debates scheduled in the next two months- I want to hear the real actual proposals of the candidates (they've been avoiding that kind of talk recently), not the crap. Oh, I digress... sorry.
About the cocaine thing- I agree with a PP- many many politicans have used illegal drugs and have had alcohol abuse problems, even though we may not know about it publicly. However, I think that NOT voting for a candidate because they admitted drug use is a perfectly acceptable justification. Honestly, it doesn't particularly affect my opinion of Obama, or Bush, or Clinton. But I understand why some voters would consider this unacceptable behavior in their President.
Edited to fix my many typos.

Seriously. Tommy, how do you even define the "war on terror"? You keep mentioning that term. I know it's not just you saying it, it is the BS the Bush administration has been shoveling. It's sad to me that people actually buy it.
Do you realize it is not a "war" in the conventional sense? How do you fight belief systems with "soldiers" who could be anybody of any gender or nationality? The terrorists aren't any identifiable nation, they aren't the English red coats and they are not Iraqi or Arabic people.
I don't think you can counteract terrorism with bombs and guns. Reaching out diplomatically and changing our image overseas is the only way to combat terrorism against americans in my opinion.

He's JOKING, right? Please tell me he's joking! He can't be serious! I'm cracking up!
Her experience as a mayor and a governor are not enough for VICE president...then I wonder what he has to say about Barack Obama, who has LESS experience and wants to be PRESIDENT!
He's so "scared" because of some rumors about dinosaurs 4000 years ago and crap about book banning (neither of which are true - people MADE THEM UP!). That's much scarier than knowing Barack Obama associates with racist, anti-american radical preachers, unrepentant domestic terrorists and a slum-lord political fixer!
ABSURD!
ITA.
the book banning is not entirely made up. She is on the record as having 2 conversations with the librarian in Wasilla about the policy on banning books. The librarian has gone on record as saying that Palin asked her "what if someone wanted to take a book off the shelves due to content?" and she responded that she would never stand for it and would get the ACLU involved. The librarian also went on the record saying that Palin returned and brought up the topic again and asked "what if people are protesting the library over questionable material?" and the librarian again responded that it would be a big deal and the ACLU would be involved. A few weeks later Palin asked for her letter of resignation (in writing) , saying that she didnt feel she had the librarian's full support.
The librarian was reinstated when the town of Wasilla responded in uproar.
There is a list of books that Palin wanted to ban - THAT is FALSE. But the conversation with the librarian is TRUE.
