Moms of 2 year old boys - potty training questions - please come in!
DS will be 2 yrs old soon. The ped said not to even attempt until he is 2 but, I was talking to my mom today on the phone and telling her I would like to try to start him on the potty soon. It really is amazing how they listen to everything we say and do.. After my conversation with her, about an hour or so later he started patting his butt and pointing to the bathroom. Telling me "potty" "Bathroom". I was like "oh no, I'm not ready for this yet"! I don't have the potty seat that goes over the Toilet seat yet or pull ups that fit him.
So, the fun begins... I brought him into the bathroom and he immediately said "off" pulling at his shorts and diaper. I asked him if he had to go poopy and he said "yes". I put him on the toilet, he made some grunting sounds, tooted a little, then I asked him if he still had to poop he said "no" then he started peeing. Some urine ended up in the bowl and the rest all over his legs. So, he said "all done" I took him off the toilet, and he took the toilet paper himself and started wiping his butt, even though he didn't poop.. Lol. It was so cute! I took a wash cloth and wiped his wee wee area and legs down. He was proud of himself. After this he gave me a huge problem putting on his diaper.
Sorry this is so long, I just need to know how exactly do I get him to pee standing up.. Do I start him sitting? Even if he continues to get the urine on him?
Do I use pull ups from now on? Except for night time diapers of-course...right? I can see that this might be an obsession issue now just like he loves to brush his teeth... Lol! He will be asking me tomorrow "potty, bathroom" oh boy!
I'm stressing out how to effectively potty train him!

Get a seat...IMO the all in one molded plastic ones (arm and hammer makes one) are better then the "cute" ones that come with a seperate piece. Pee gets caught in the seat between the padded part and plastic part and it is a PITA.
Start him sitting. Remind him to "tuck" himself into the seat. At that age I had a seat in the bathroom but wouldn't force the issue at all. We would go before bath, after bath, If we were getting dressed downstairs. I started more with it when he was 2 and 8 months and within a week he was completely day trained, pee and poop. (Nap and night is another issue)

All my boys were trained by 2...I have the seat that is part of the actual toilet seat...home depot sells some...I have one by Koehler that I really like.
I always started with sitting...I had them push their peepee down to pee...it also helped them kinda learn to aim. I would def jump on it if he shows interest.
ETA:I agree, I never used pull ups either...right to underwear.

I would start him out sitting too. Also, we didn't use pull-ups during the day. We went straight to underwear. DS only slept in pull-ups and that lasted a few months until he was night trained.

DS is 2 years 4 months and we are starting to toilet train. We have the Baby Bjorn potty. It is basic, very easy to clean. DS sits down, I can't imagine him being able to aim at this point. We don't use pull ups. He is still in a diaper, I just think pull ups are a unnecessary step. I plan to go straight to underwear.

DS is 2.5. We have a seat that has a step with it- it kind of unfolds and has a step and seat in one. He sits down to pee... I just remind him to "hold it down", or if you tell them to lean forward, that helps too. I also got one of the portable potty seats for the car, for longer road trips or places where there's no potty. I still have him in pull ups when we go out because I'm paranoid about accidents lol at this point, I'd rather change a pull up in the store bathroom than worry about having a change of clothes with me all the time. I think I'll push it more once he turns 3 though. At night, we definitely still use overnight diapers. He wakes up pretty wet most days, so I'm gonna give it a little while for nighttime training. Other than that, just work with him, make a huge deal when he goes on the potty- but don't stress if he doesn't. He's still REALLY young, especially for a boy! So don't feel bad if you have to back off for awhile and start again later.

Try having him sit down backwards, facing the
toilet. He will have to spread his legs a little wider, making it easier for everything to get into the toilet and not all over the place!
