Moms of boys - circumcision question
MY obgyn is a wonderful man, who also happens to be a Mohel. I spoke to him yesterday about preforming the baby's bris.
He told me he uses anaesthesia, and when I asked what kind...I was surprised to hear he actually injects a nerve blocker into the baby.
This is what I found on the net that explains it:
"Topic: Dorsal penile nerve block (DPNB) anesthesia for circumcision Dorsal penile nerve block (DPNB) or penile nerve block anesthesia is used to numb the penis during circumcision. A health professional injects a numbing medication (such as lidocaine) at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions at the base of the penis. The injections may cause some pain or bruising."
In my gut I take issue with this, but maybe I am overreacting?
Can you give me an idea of what type of anaesthesia your son had for the procedure and if you felt it was sufficient??

Re: Moms of boys - circumcision question
For my sons bris, they gave me a numbing cream to rub on his penis a few times ( I don't remember the time intervals)And then of course, there was the wine :) He didn't even cry at all :) The lady I used was Dorothy Greenbaum.

Re: Moms of boys - circumcision question
We had the circumcision done before we left the hospital. We requested they use Emla (numbing cream) and it was fine. We had the procedure done a few hours before we brought him home and DS is okay!

Re: Moms of boys - circumcision question
I honestly have no idea b/c we had his done when he was 12 hours old in the hospital.
I think that nerve block sounds worse than it really is, maybe he could use lidocaine in another form....KWIM?

Re: Moms of boys - circumcision question
I am not the mother of a boy but I have sat front and center for a number of bris'(not sure how to make bris a plural in English). I have never seen a mohel inject ANYTHING into a baby. I thought they just gave them a wine soaked piece of gauze to suck on and the whole thing was done in a couple of minutes. The babies cry because they are cold. As far as after care goes, I wouldn't know.

Re: Moms of boys - circumcision question
The mohel we used did not inject anything into DS. He used numbing cream and wine on a 4x4 gauze. DS did not cry. We used Cantor Phil Sherman. He was very professional and I would use him again if we were having another boy.

Same here! In the hospital they only use the numbing cream from what I understand.
JMO, but I wouldnt want anything injected into my son's penis as a newborn.

Possibly, but from my experiences, the baby is in another room until the Mohel is good to go. The mother brings the baby into the room where the bris is performed (then usually leaves but doesn't have to) and then they (the mohels) do their thing in minutes. I have never seen an injection. Then the Mohel leaves instructions and goes on to the other 3 or 4 he has to do later in the day. It is quite a business!

Re: Moms of boys - circumcision question
my mohel did the injection. He is also a ped. urigolost. He injected my DS before the bris and no one saw it...including myself. Only my Dh was in the room. People commented on how nice it was that the baby did not cry and seemed relaxed. He did have two tiny bruises on either side from the injection points. He was never uncomfortable or in pain. I chose this mohel specifically for this very reason and I am very happy with my decision and the end result.

Re: Moms of boys - circumcision question
They used a numbing cream (in the hospital) from what I remember. Honestly, the worst of it is seeing it afterwards. And I was THRILLED that they used something on him. My MIL had told me they wouldn't use anything because her 3 sons didn't get anything!

Re: Moms of boys - circumcision question
I had two different mohels for my boys. One who used a numbing cream. And one who didn't. Honestly, I didn't notice a difference.
I would do what you feel comfortable with.

I was told they use numbing cream - my guess would be emla since we had to use it when it was redone.

Re: Moms of boys - circumcision question
At the Bris for both of my DS there was no numbing cream used, just lots of wine. Neither of my boys cried. We were very impressed with our Mohel and he is hysterical.

Re: Moms of boys - circumcision question
A dorsal penile nerve block is the best form of anesthesia to use during a circumcision. It is recommended by the Academy of Pediatrics for this purpose.
I can see why you'd be nervous-but its better for the baby to have slight discomfort during the injection than to feel the pain of the circumcision.

it's not the discomfort of the injection that worries me...its the meds used injected in a tiny body.
I am aware that the Academy of Pediatrics recommends it, but to be honest that holds little water with me. (Not that I am a dr. but I don't really trust all they say is safe.)
My other question is if they recommend it, then why do so few Mohel's use it?

Re: Moms of boys - circumcision question
At my son's bris there was no numbing involved. He cried for two seconds but I think it was more because he was cold and had his diaper open. They mohel left us instructions on how to care for the circumcision. Feel free to FM me if you have any questions.

Re: Moms of boys - circumcision question
Our pediatrician performed DS's in the hospital and used the Lidocaine. I was fine with it as it is not long lasting and I couldn't imagine him having it done with no anesthetic.

Re: Moms of boys - circumcision question
Reading about this makes me worry for what my little DS will go through when he is born. With a DD I didn't have to worry about that.
When DS is born, we'll go by what the Dr. recommends.
