Do you pick up/clean up all the toys everynight?

Christopher has 472,937 cars and trains and they are literally all over my house. I cannot bring myself to clean them up every night and even though we try to get him to do it, he won't (he says it is a "big, big mess" but doesn't want to pick them up)

Nope Chat Icon My DH works late and it is just me all day long....so by bedtime I am fried. Usually DS will put away a few things, but there are always things left out.
I try to kick them all to the side of the living room but some nights I go to bed with cars and trains all over the ottoman.
I know a lot of Moms who can't relax at night til all the toys are away....not me! I will clean the kitchen, do laundry and kick the toys to the side and I am OK with that most nights.

Genevieve does this with her plastic disney dolls and Billy does this with his cars. They have bags/containers to keep them all in. If they refuse to pick them up, I put them away and they are not allowed to play with them the next day.

Lately, they've been good at picking them up.

Re: Moms of Toddlers..toy related

The living room I do clean up every night, we have a toy bin and everything goes in there, not soo hard a clean up.

The playroom I would say 50% of the time! Thats were all his trains and stuff are so sometimes him and Daddy make a big mess and I dont feel like cleaning it!

I have just started including DS in the clean up process. I tell him we have to clean up and just sing that and I tell him what to pick up and where to put it! I do 90% but its a start!

Yes, I did even when they were toddlers. I would sing the clean up song and I always made them help a little, and if they didn't I took away a favorite toy for a day. When they'd ask for it the next day I'd tell them that I was sorry but they don't get to play with XYZ because they didn't care enough about it last night to put it away to sleep. Then I'd remind them that they needed to help clean up that night to get the toy back or I'd take another.

Now I just have to say "Hmmm, which toy am I going to take?" and they both jump up and start cleaning up.

Re: Moms of Toddlers..toy related

have seen a few good ideas about this.

1. The toy fairy-when toys don't get picke dup the toy fairy comes and borrows them for a week(kinda mean but hey)

2. set a timer and make a game of it. The first few times you can help him and act all crazy he will probably get a kick out of it

See, that's how I feel too.

DH works nights, so he sleeps all day and doesn't leave for work until 9.30, and thats when Christopher goes to bed and I am ready to drop.

Re: Moms of Toddlers..toy related

I do, especially the toys in my living room. There are nights when I am too tired (or in too much pain) to get to the office/playroom but I do try to do it mostly every night.

It drives me crazy if I don't.

#1 would be a good idea if it was a big toy. But he doesn't have any of those anymore (just a train table) he has a bizillion little cars, so if I took them ALL away, I'd kill myself the next day and if I took one away, it wouldn't matter, you know?Chat Icon

DS cleans up his own toys. He isn't allowed to take out a new toy until he puts away what he is playing with.

Re: Moms of Toddlers..toy related

No. The living room generally gets cleaned up every night, but his playroom does not.

Sometimes I just toss stuff from the LR into the playroom. Chat Icon DS isn't 2 yet, so I may change up the routine soon, but we usually have about an hour and a half from the time we arrive home until he goes to bed. For me, cooking dinner, cleaning up the kitchen and the bathroom and doing laundry usually trumps a daily cleanup of the playroom. I just don't have the time or the energy to do it everyday.

Re: Moms of Toddlers..toy related

Most of his toys are in the family room. The family room looks like a tornado hit as soon as he walks into it. After he goes to bed, I clean al the toys by putting them back in their containers, bins, etc. and lining the bigger toys against the walls. He'll clean up if we make a game of it and help him, but honestly, I'm so tired and ready to put him to bed at that point, it's easier to do it myself. If we try to clean any earlier than the minute he is going upstairs to bed, it's completely pointless because he takes everything back out again.

Re: Moms of Toddlers..toy related

I clean up whats left at the end of the night. It's usually not too much.

I encourage DD to clean up one thing before she takes out another, sometimes she does sometimes she doesn't. If she ask for her tent and tunnels, or the arts and crafts stuff, or anything else that is bigger or messier that I have to take out then we do a full clean up first.

I try to have a quick clean up with her before dinner or before bedtime and she's usually helpful.

Re: Moms of Toddlers..toy related

I usually sing the Barney cleanup song with DD right before bedtime and that gets her to help me.

But I keep their toys in bins- legos, blocks and bigger stuff have their own bins. Basically we just toss them in.

Could you get a bin for all the cars so its more fun to clean them up?

Yes I clean them up everyday. We have a designated section in the living room and I have them all in order every night. Our house is too small to leave them out all the time.

same. Josh cleans up on his own most times. I have a small bin for his cara so he just dumps them in there.

Same here. Bry is old enough now to know to clean up before bed. I do help him out, but, he does a majority of it.

Re: Moms of Toddlers..toy related

we do most nights....and I'll tell you that I get so mad when I wake up in the morning after we didn't pick them up. Even when I know that in 2.2 seconds DS it goes back to the same way because DS is inevitably trailing right behind me. it just starts my day off wrong.

I clean up after him all day and ask him to help...like, "can you put this over there or in there, etc". I never let it get too messy during the day.
