Moms who BF for first year - question about transition to whole milk

DD will be 1 in June. My ped said I can start introducing whole milk to her around 11 months. He suggested giving her one small bottle of milk during the day to start. I'm definitely ready to start weaning but I just wanted to see how some other moms went about it. Did you mix the milk with pumped bm or did you give it to your LO straight up? How long did the transition take?

Any advice would be appreciated Chat Icon

I am so interested in the responses to this question. DD is almost 11 months, she is still ebf, but of course gets solids too!, and lately my supply is just tanking.

Someone told me that their ped suggested mixing whole. milk and breast milk:

1st week 3/4 bm, 1/4 whole milk

2nd week 1/2 & 1/2

3rd week 1/4 bm, 3/4 whole milk

I would also like to know whether anyone bypassed whole milk and went to almond milk or rice milk instead!

Re: Moms who BF for first year - question about transition to whole milk

We tried milk a few days after his first birthday. He hates it. We have tried a few times with no luck. So we will wit a few more months to try again. He still loves nursing often at almost 14 months so I am not pushing milk for now.

Same. DD never liked whole milk, so when we weaned I just gave her water with meals. We discovered coconut milk recently and DD likes that.

Re: Moms who BF for first year - question about transition to whole milk

We started around 11 1/2 months. First 3/4 bm and 1/4 cow's milk then the next week 1/2 and 1/2 and the third week 1/4 bm and 3/4 cow's milk. Once we went all the way to cow's milk she decided she hates milk. Now she barely drinks any milk at 14 months old and I'm still nursing her three times a day. She eats cheese and yogurt for the calcium and takes a vitamin. I'm ready to try to wean her from nursing and I'm afraid of how it will go.

Hopefully you'll have more luck with cow's milk than a lot of us nursing moms have had!

I started at 11 months and SLOWLY transitioned, adding a little more cow's milk each day. . .she still loves her milk!

Re: Moms who BF for first year - question about transition to whole milk

I started offering milk when DS was a little over 12 months. I tried giving it to him in a sippy cup, but he wouldn't drink it. The only way he'd drink it was in a bottle and warmed up. Within a few weeks, he was drinking it in a sippy cup, but it still needed to be warmed up. Eventually he was ok with drinking it cold. It took about a month to fully transition him to milk and the sippy cup. I was still BFing him in the morning and occasionally at night.

I offered him a cup of whole milk warmed up. He hated it. Then I offered it to him cold and he drank it up so fast.

It was never a transition with him. I never mixed my BM with it either.

I guess he just really liked the taste lol. He was about 11.5 months at the time. He wasn't nursing as much.

Re: Moms who BF for first year - question about transition to whole milk

I'm a FTWM but I would nurse DS morning and night and he got 2 bottles of pumped BM at daycare. I stopped pumping at 1 year and at daycare DS got a bottle of pumped milk and a sippy of whole milk for a week and then the following week he only got sippys of whole milk. I still nursed morning and night until 14 months. I never gave him whole milk in a bottle- I used this time to get him off bottles completely and it worked out fine.
