My son was bit twice now at daycare...

by the same kid. Apparently, my son is not the only one to have been a victim. I already have spoken to the director and wanted to make sure that this was being addressed formally with the parents. What should I do? What expectations should I have with the daycare/ I mean can a one year old really understand not biting another kid? My son was bit so hard yesterday that the kid left his teeth impressions in Frankie's forearm. This is the second incident in less than three weeks.

Re: My son was bit twice now at daycare...

I don't have any experience with my DC being bit but i can tell you what we and the daycare did when my DC was the one biting and maybe it can help the daycare with the child biting your DS. It was mainly becasue she was teething and we tried everything teething rings and pacifiers it just wasn't working. So what they did for two weeks was write down everythig she did so we could see a pattern, just in case it wasn't teething. And they would give her a sticker if she was good, and she wore that thing like she was so proud. You would never expect an 18 month to know what it meant but she did. ANd i would tell her every day to be nice to her firends and not to bite By the end of teh two weeks it stopped. But she did have four teeth come in. We also had the teacher her bring her into the office if she bit, so it was kind of like a punishment. This alll worked and the teachers really kept up with it. But her pediatricain explained to me its how they get there frustration out, not much you can do. Just thought maybe your daycare can do soem of these things and it might help.

ETA: Sorry your DS was biten Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: My son was bit twice now at daycare...

I don't know if you remember but Michael was bit his first week in daycare. I happen to find out accidentally who the little kid was. My director takes this type of situations very seriously...apparently the child has some behavioral issues that my director wanted the parents to address, have him evaluated, etc. The parents declined, and so my director asked them take their child out of the center. He is a danger not only to other kids but also to himself (throws things, pulls things down)...it takes two teachers to control him and watch like hawks over him to make sure that he doesn't hurt other kids. My director just couldn't have that...not fair to other children and the teachers.

Anyway, I would make sure that you know exactly what precautionary steps are taken to ensure that this child is not biting other kids. I mean being bit twice by the smae child and being not the only victim seems unnacceptable to me.

If the child is constantly biting they need to have a shadow in the room until he stops. Unfortunately biting can be a normal part of a child's development as they are learning to talk and can get easily frustrated. They eventually grow out of it. If it continues I would tell them that you want a shadow in the room. Good Luck Chat Icon

My dd was bit 5 times. They wound up switching teachers in the room and she hasnt been bit since. I am not sure if that is the reason it stopped or not.

Re: My son was bit twice now at daycare...

My DS was bit, and was a biter, too. There is not much you can really do as a parent, really. The daycare seperated my DS and this other boy - they had a love/hate thing and would be best friends one minute and biting the next. I think I got 1-2 letters a week for like 3 weeks, seriously. We were working on it, followed all the tips given to us, but at that age, they can't express themselves and this is one way they do it unfortunately.

I know it's upsetting, I was upset when he was bit, and mortified when he bit back. Check your daycares policy - ours is if they break skin 3 times, they are out. Other serious biting gets them sent home for the day.

You can always request a move in rooms for your DC or the other child, if that is an option.

I'm sorry you're going through this. But, I remember being LIVID when my DS was first bit, and then when he was the biter and I couldn't fix it, thinking OMG what these other parents must be thinking about us to have such a problem child...Chat Icon Luckily it passes...

eeks so sorry! have no advice but i'm wondering what would happen if i put DD in daycare she is such a biter! at home we try to redirect her, tell her stern "NO BITITNG!" etc etc but she still does it. why do kids bite?! why can't they just eat food insted of biting? lol.
