North Fork Crash
I know the owners of the last vineyard they were at, vineyard 48.
The news just said many limo drivers have been getting ticket for making that U-turn as it is too tight for a car that size

I can only hope that this becomes the catalyst for a change to the law, that they are charged with murder, or attempted murder....every.single.time. someone gets pulled over or in an accident while under the influence.
There is barely a penalty for DWI/DUI - not enough to keep people from doing it.
I pray for these families.
Sadly this crash won't change anything. I think it was almost 10 years to the month that that family was hit head on and that little girl was decapitated on the Meadowbrook because of a drunk driver and what has changed? Nothing. I'm so disgusted.
Why aren't penalties harsher for DWI's? Are there pro-drunk driving lobbyists?? And I'm asking seriously...how does this work? Why isn't anything changing? None of us are safe and it feels like no one in a position to do anything about it cares.
MADD has been valiently fighting this fight for years. The problem is, drunks don't think. I have a relative who's been picked up several times for DWI and always convinced herself that she hadn't done anything wrong. It wasn't until another state caught her and threw her in jail that she woke up to reality. Thankfully, she never hurt anyone, but she easily could have.

I read this also, and some of the comments on the news pages from people that know that intersection, have stated that many liimos have to actually back up to be able to make that u-turn. I hope the limo driver is charged as well.
I also just saw a statement from authorities on the news that a witness saw the limo driver pull right out in front of the truck.

North Fork Crash
A vehicle making a left turn or uturn always has a greater duty to yield right of way. It was a perfect storm of a wreckless, at fault limo driver and a driver whose reaction time was diminished from drinking. Fault all around, it's so awful.

Sadly, I believe if it wasn't the drunk driver, it would have been someone else. Traveling 55mph when a very long car pulls out in front of you really makes for a dangerous situation. Especially considering that the eye witness said he pulled out right in front of the truck. I don't know that anyone would be able to stop in time in that circumstance. Not excusing the drunk driver at all either before anyone says that.

Don't know how close the drunk driver was but maybe if he wasn't drunk, his response time might have been quicker and he could have steered the car farther from the limo.

Re: North Fork Crash
It was the "perfect storm". I think they are both at complete fault. Had the DD not been on the road AT ALL like he shouldnt have been, he wouldnt have been there for this to happen. Had the limo driver used better judgement, or ANY judgement at all, it wouldnt have happened either. Its so awful, so so so awful

Has his Blood Alcohol Level been released?
Nevermind...just saw this:
"Two key pieces of information were not yet known, he said: One was Romeo's speed before the crash. The other was the level of his intoxication."
"Spota said investigators were waiting yesterday for the results of a blood test to see how intoxicated he was."

Exactly. And this is yet another reason I won't drink and drive. Say I had a couple drinks and was sitting at a red light minding my own business, and along comes someone who rear ends me. Despite any wrongdoing or negligence of my own, I'm likely getting arrested and going to jail.

I don't think so. The last I saw and read was that he said he had "a couple" of beers at home and then went out.

My friend is home from the hospital. Thank you for your prayers. I can only hope she is able to eventually find peace. She's lost so much at a young age, and now her bff and three other friends. I can't fathom it.

Re: North Fork Crash
My heart goes out to the families and friends of all those involved. Such a tragic accident.
But as others of stated, it was the "Perfect Storm." 1. A limo driver who may have unintentionally (because of a large blind spot) cut the pickup driver (with right of way) off on a 55 mph road.
2. Compromised safety because seatbelts are rarely worn, coupled with structural integrity of a vehicle of that length and a side impact.
3. A possibly impaired driver going too fast and/or unable to react.
I know they stated he failed a field sobriety test, but the driver was hospitalized so I wonder if he had any trauma/injuries that may have impacted his results. I'm curious to see what his toxicology results will come in at.
I'm by no means defending driving under the influence, but the pick up driver made not have been able to avoid this accident regardless of whether he was under the influence or not.
Regardless, my thoughts and prayers are with all those involved.

I am also very curious to see what his testing reveals. One of Spota's comments made me think that maybe alcohol wasn't as large a factor as initially thought. I also thought BAC results came back more quickly than this? Obviously I am in NO way defending drunk driving, just to be clear.
What a heartbreaking tragedy. I have driven that stretch so many times and I do find it scary. It's a high speed stretch where people can turn or go straight across four lanes of fast traffic with just a blinking light. Why not have a regular traffic light there??

A resident who lives on that road was quoted as saying he had called the town several times about that spot asking for a real light to be installed and even told them that there was going to be a fatality with a limo one day. He was right. Sad that it takes a horrific accident to get anything done- rather than be proactive and saving lives.

Horrible tragedy. I believe a witness said that the limo was stopped and the witness saw the approaching SUV and the limo continued the U-turn. I think the limo driver might be charged as well. So sad.

Re: North Fork Crash
Just saw updated news report. Lowered drivers bail 50k cash - 100k bond. Blood alcohol test was taken 1 hr and 40 minutes after crash and showed 0.66 which is why they reduced bail and charges.
My question is does that amount of time allow for the alcohol level to drop significantly? Also wonder if he was put on IV that whole time which would also help flush him out.
They said they didn't do breathalyzer on scene bc they were too busy trying to help the hurt people. I get that, but believe that was 100% negligence by police. It could mean the difference between a slap on the wrist and life sentences.
I truly hope they get to the bottom of this

That is complete horse.
A family member of mine, a Southold Town PO, was on the scene. The drunk criminal who killed those girls refused the breathalyzer at the scene. This was after he tried to leave the scene and they went after him and he changed his mind. He lawyered up right away too. Don't believe anything you read in the news - they get shit wrong CONSTANTLY. It is such a shame because then many in the public will read it as truth.

Yes and yes.
Many refuse the test so that they can get the IV and/or consume water and urinate in the interim. And yes, the level of intox in NYS is .08 so absolutely that time frame could have reduced him from being legally intox to impaired -- which is a lesser charge. Which is crazy because at both levels you are pretty darn shit-faced.

.066
So just under .07, meaning.
