Goobster...you should watch what u say. Insane is talking about something you have zero knowledge in. Mothers of sick children use collected milk...if a mother chooses bm for her child and caanot produce it..why not go to a different source?

I am not including those who tried but did not succeed for medical reasons..and to you, my heart aches and I am honored to stand beside you as a mother who took the path of least resistance ? The amount of guilt that fuels this senseless debate over and over again is so sad.? You can still be a great mom if you choose a less beneficial method of food and soothing. ?
I breastfed both my children & you come off like a sanctimonius, self-righteous ass with the above statements.
We all get that IDEALLY breastmilk is better. But you have to admit that sometimes IT'S NOT. For those with poor nutrition, for those with jobs that make it extraordinarily difficult & put someone's livelihood in jeopardy, for many, many women AND for their children, it's not the best choice.
This is what is missing from this initiative.
I personally didn't BF, didn't want to and didn't try. I don't have guilt. What fuels the debate from me is dealing with ignorant statements like Grills.
She must grow her own food, and raise her own livestock b/c in her book, you have to do all these things to successfully feed your DC.

I won't watch what I say. For ME and MY CHILD, it would be an insane choice in this day and age.
I am not referring to people whose children are sick and they strongly believe in it. But for me with a healthy child to use another mother's milk when FORMULA exists, I find that an INSANE choice. I could never be ok with using someone else's milk for my healthy child who was just fine with formula. JMO.

Just because you wouldn't do it doesn't mean it's wrong. I find it frustrating that while you are calling Grill or whatever the hell her name is out you are doing the same thing in just another way. It's clear you had no desire or drive to bf, and fine, whatever but don't make something as AWESOME as milk sharing seem horrible. You could just say it's not for me. As a bfing mother and one who has nursed her cousins daughter and has had her child nursed by another there is nothing wrong with milk sharing. It is a beautiful gift.

Re: Not sure if it's been posted already...did you hear about Bloomberg's latest initiative?
I think it's insane. I could never consider that as even a choice, for my child, when formula exists. Sorry if that offends.
I was speaking for myself and my child, that's where my opinion comes from.
Everyone else can do what they want but it's not a choice I would ever consider with a child who could thrive just as well on formula.

The point I was trying to make is that we all feel a certain way about things and while I do not think Grill did a good job expressing herself is she not just as entitled to her opinion no matter how insane it sounds? What offends me is that in one breath we (I am being general here) slam people for what they say and then do the very same thing.

Thank you for that.
I know a vegan who could not produce...so another mother shared her milk. She did not want to use cow based formula.
A huge benefit to nursing is how green it is. There is no pollution or factory waste in sharing BM.

I am very proud to say I have donated over 600oz to 2 mother's in need. 1 had a baby with Failure to thrive and could only have BM and one was for an adopted baby. I wish I could have done more If you are truly honest and upfront it is a great gift to give someone. It's not about nutrition always, but about the health benefits for the baby.

Re: Not sure if it's been posted already...did you hear about Bloomberg's latest initiative?
I was livid over this until I read the actual initiative. It is written to support new mothers who decide to BF. I think that support is really important. I started out BFing, and asked to see the LC at South Nassau. She came in, worked with me briefly on my latch, then left and told me to call for her if I had trouble with the other breast. That was it. I definitely needed more support, and should have asked for it later that day or the next, but I was tired, had lots of visitors and figured I was doing it correctly until I got home and DD was still screaming after feedings. I had a case of free nursettes, and I used one to supplement, which quickly became a complete transition to FFing because it was less stressful. The truth is that if I didn't have those free samples, I probably would have tried harder to BF, so I do understand the initiative, but in the end it was totally my decision to stop BFing, free samples or not. That said, no one who chooses to FF in the hospital should be made to feel badly or be given a lecture with each bottle requested. A new mother's mental health is so important, and there is no need to impose guilt. Formula should not be treated as a medication, rather than a form of nutrition.
We also have to keep in mind that the LIF population is not at all representative of the NYC population. There are many, many people who are unaware of the benefits of BFing and do need the education so that they can then make their CHOICE.

Thank God for people like you who donate! I wonder if the people who find donor milk "gross" have a personal relationship with the cow that produces the milk used in formula.....boggles my mind that the milk of another species fortified with vitamins that comes from a CAN is a "better" choice.

From the initiative website: Mothers who decide to formula feed and cannot afford formula will be referred to WIC (Women, Infants and Children), a food and nutrition program for low-income families.
so what happens to a mother who can't afford formula but has no milk supply? she leaves the hospital with nothing but WIC paperwork to fill out. she then has to wait to be approved (let's hope she is) before she's able to get formula for her baby. how long do you think that will take in the great bureaucracy that is NYC?
I don't understand? So we should give all mothers 1, 2, 3 months of formula in case their milk runs out while they wait for WIC? There has to also be some initiative on the MOTHER'S end too in this case. If i'm pg and I am not going to bf and I can't afford formula then I should be figuring something out well before I leave the hospital. It's not the nurses job to do that. I also believe that it is a part of the prenatal care...at least it is where I go.
With WIC, you make an appointment, show up, get approved THAT DAY and receive your checks THAT DAY. It's not endless months of waiting for approval like other programs.

Goobster, let's be real, you would never ever consider providing your DC bm, even if it was raining from the sky and it was the only drink available for days you still would be against it..you have been anti BF in literally every single thread I could ever think of. So reading your opinions on any nursing topics ever leave me scratching my head.

She is entitled to her opinion. I respect her opinion that breastfeeding is the better choice (in fact I agree with her that nutrionally speaking it generally is). But she could use a whole truckload of tact & tone down the sancti-mommy posts, no? The problem I see is it's a good message that gets lost because of the delivery.

For me, I dislike Bloomberg so that is why I had a negative reaction to it. However I do feel the initiative itself is a good, positive thing, educating women on BF is in no way bad IMO.
What sucks is the nasty, HTH women on here who get off on putting others down. You BF'ed your child, that is wonderful, you FF, that is great too. You gain nothing by making others feel bad. I hope that in addition to giving your children good nutrition you teach them to be tolerant of other people and their decisions/choices, it is just as important to raise a decent child as it is to have a healthy one, just saying.

Here's a quote from the article I referenced:
"lactation was the only one found to lower risk of breast cancer throughout a woman's life."
This language combined with the other terms in the article (evidence, convincing evidence) are the best we can ever have in science, with all the confounding variables that exist in studies like these. If a woman needs more "proof" than this that BFing is the better choice, then I would venture to say that she is protecting a decision she made that deep down she may question. I don't even understand how there could be a debate about BF and FF. I mean....do what you want, but realize that if you chose to FF without giving BFing the good, hard effort it deserves...you are picking the less beneficial option for yourself and your child. It's just so simple, entirely supported in the medical literature and simply preposterous to even debate it. It should not be a matter of legislation. But like heroin...sometimes the government needs to step in to protect it's people from themselves (or in this case, from their parents!).
And FTR, I think heroin should be legal too. To each his or her own. Your body, your choice.
See, BF'ing my first child and the sleep deprivation that occurred due to this decision to exclusively BF almost led me spiraling into postpartum depression. So please don't tell me that FF'ing is "less beneficial" for me and my children. For MY family, formula is definitely the right choice. Sometimes mental health of the mom outweighs any of the potential benefits from breast feeding.

Re: Not sure if it's been posted already...did you hear about Bloomberg's latest initiative?
Well I, for one, wish I could go back and not BF my DC and formula feed them instead....maybe I would have my cute, perky boobs back instead of the pancakes I am left with!
But seriously, who cares, FF...BF...do whatever you want as long as your baby is fed and taken care of. As long as you still have a choice, as long as you can still get formula in the hospital if that is your choice, things are still OK in my book. If extra education in the hospital could make some women change their minds about BFing, I don't think that is a bad thing. There are a lot of benefits to BFing....save money, don't have to wait for a bottle to heat up, milk is always readily available, helps you lose weight faster...and maybe there are women out there who aren't aware of all the benefits. Give them a chance to possibly change their mind and if they don't...give them formula.

???? I think that he should stay out of how a mother feeds her child, he's a politician. IMO he shouldn't be involved in this. I did in fact breastfeed my daughter it was my decision that doesn't make me any better then a mom who chose not/could not breastfeed.
