Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
I think it is adorable! My DS is always pointing out my fingers and toes and saying "Oh! Mommy's nails pretty"
If he wanted to do this I am fine with that. He's just a kid, it's just nail polish. If it freaks anyone else out I'm okay with that because they don't live with my kids
ETA quote from the article:
"Psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow told Fox News: 'This is a dramatic example of the way that our culture is being encouraged to abandon all trappings of gender identity."
Um, what the flip is wrong with that? Maybe our skewed views on gender identity are the reason why women in the workplace are STILL fighting for equal pay and legitimate maternity leave while men don't have to worry about any of that.

Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
I see no big deal at all - I know DH would freak if I painted Cai's nails.... but what do you think as an ad for a company - does it encourage anything in terms of gender identity issues??? i think that's kind of a stretch

And what about all the rockstars with painted fingernails, why is it ok for them, but not a little kid?
I'm ok with it, he's just expressing himself.

Honestly (and I'm sure I'll be in the minority) but I wouldn't paint my son's toenails. HOWEVER I also do NOT think that by this mom painting her son's nails...she is going to cause him to have an identity issue. *IF* he were to be confused about his gender identity- painting or not paniting his nails wouldn't matter. To each his own

Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
MAYBE if the kid was fully dressed in pink, lace, and bows, I would think it was a bit weird - but he is completely all boy, having fun with his mommy!

I would love to see how many TG/TS men had THEIR nails painted when they were young. I am going to guess a small percentage - if ANY....

Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
I think this is an ad.
this kid probably isn't even this lady's son. it's a gimic. so I don't think much of anything.
ETA: now that I've read the article, this whole thing is just ridiculous.
I still think it is probably a gimic. something she saw on gwen stefani's son and thought it would be cool.
as for the kid...boy or girl...they don't have these gender issues yet. that is US. putting our **** on the kid.
there was no real reason for her to send this particular part of her day with her son other than to cause some buzz. it's any way you slice it. contrived on one side, and a sad platform for angst ridden homophobes on the other.

Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
Strange ad and it sure is getting a lot of publicity. I vividly remember getting ready for a ballet show and my mom doing my nails. My brother who is 18 months younger than me insisted on having his nails painted too.
When I was teaching 3rd grade ,before having DS, we had "market days" during our study of economics. Each child had a job; some children were private employees of our city and some had public jobs. Every year there were nail salons and every year my boys had their nails painted. Not one parent complained, and these parents liked to complain. Actually my DH came into shop and also had his nails painted. That could by why there was a long line of boys waiting to also get hot pink
It is just nail polish!

Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
I used to dress my brother up in my dresses and paint his nails and put on jewelery.. he loved it! It's just a costume and an expression. . he DEF grew out of it and it has zero to do with his expression as an adult male. .
and I have a friend who is TG and like the PP said. . they sure did not have his nails painted as a kid and in fact grew up playing football, working on his/her father's boat etc. .
I think it's all about letting kids play in whatever non harmful way they want as long as i doesn't bring harm to themselves or anyone else. .

Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
My first reaction is this mom (if she is the mom) is trying too hard to make her son "cool." The glasses, the long hair, the pink polish. What is this kid...4? This has probably a lot more to do with the parents' agenda than it does the kid's...
That said, in real life if my son wanted me to paint his toes pink--or any color for that matter--I probably wouldn't be too thrilled with it. But since I "let" my younger DD be Spiderman for Halloween and have a "racecar" birthday party, I guess I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't let him try it... He's only 5.5 mos. I think I'll cross that bridge when I come to it (and with two older sisters this is a possibility!) and in the meantime pray I don't have to.
My DH, on the other hand, would divorce me.

Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
I'm sure I'll be in the minority, but I don't care if I had a boy and he played with dolls etc...but I don't know for some reason painting his nails seems a bit much for me, BUT again, I will be the first one to admit that I think it's my own cr@p that I'm putting on him...I don't have a boy so it's really a very easy thing for me to say now, I may not have a problem with it if I did have a son and actually lived it KWIM

It is her kid - the article discusses that she is someone in J Crew, and it's her only kid... etc...
I don't think she is trying to hard to make him cool. We dress our kids in our own personal style until they assert their own styles (and usually parents don't let their kids do that anyway)

ITA with this.
I also don't see any big deal about kids not living up to gender related expectations or being into things that are even "taboo" by some standards. My brothers both wore nail polish and played with dolls. My father was not pleased but both boys loved the ladies and were definite teenaged horndogs. So no harm done.
