Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
Would I initiate this activity with my DS? No, it never even occurred to me to paint his nails.
If he asked me to do it? Yes, I'd do it for him, but I admit I'd make sure he wore sneakers that week-- as much as I never want to stigmatize any feelings or interests he might have, let's face it... people are cruel to anyone who is even remotely "different".
You and your child can have fun doing a pedicure together at home, but there's no reason to knowingly subject him to judgment and mockery.

Everyone knows that if you polish your nails you must be very effeminate....
IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE
Hey, if that's what she does with her DS, then so be it. At least she's spending time with her DS. That's the important thing....
Not for nothing, with the exception of Charlie Sheen (obviously it was supposed to be funny for the show) they are all wearing dark gray or black nail polish. That kid is wearing bright pink polish. Why didnt they just put a headband on him while they were at it?
Personally, I wouldnt even date a guy who painted his nails. Not my thing. If Heidi Klum likes it, that's great for her.

This was my first thought. I noticed that too (black or dark nailpolish). And Charlie Sheen, well we all know about him. No, really, as for Charlie Sheen, that was a script on a tv show, not his personal choice.

Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
I personally find the ad distasteful and would not paint my son's nails pink. I may cave to a black or navy blue, but not pink and only for Halloween or something that warrants it. Call me traditional, but I encourage and I guess expect some gender preferences. I'm not saying if my dc to be is a boy he would only wear camo, but it would be normal camo not pink. Does that make sense?

umm yeah I'm sure they could've picked another Saturday activity - they obviously did it to provoke controversy. As a frist grade teacher - I would never encourage it. Kids are cruel and not as "open" to nontraditional things. My kids would go nuts if a boy picks pink construction paper....

Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
I don't think it's a big deal. Personally though, if I ever had a son I would not paint his nails. I don't think it would give him gender confusion if I did, but it's just not my taste. Just as I wouldn't want my little boy trying on my heals or makeup. But even with that said, I don't see the big deal with this add. I kinda feel like they did it for the reaction they knew they'd get. They could have just as easily had a little girl with her mom in this ad. I think they're getting exactly what they want - with both the positive AND negative feedback.

Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
I read about this on another blog- Sarah Hoffman, who writes about her "pink boy" a boy who loves girl things. She indicated that this is the creative director's son, who apparently likes pink things.
There are plenty of kids out there who are non-gender conforming. Some turn out to be gay or transgendered, some do not.
I read a lot of comments from people who believe the mother initiated this, or wanted the child to look a certain way. But the truth is, some kids BEG for non-gender conforming things. He looks to be about 4 years old- my 4 year old girl is extremely girly, she wants the brightest, pinkest, most sparkly things. No amount of talk can steer her desires.
What if it was my 4 year old SON? There's a lot of talk about "I would never let my kids do X, Y, or Z" But what if that made the child truly miserable? What if that child felt unloved and unaccepted, because I would never listen to what they really wanted?
I have no problem with the ad, though if it is her son, and he does love pink, she is making it very public. There's nothing wrong with boys liking pink things, or nail polish, or dolls in my opinion, but I think privacy is really important. But I think it is also nice for families that do have boys who want nail polish to acknowledge there are other kids out there. And if it was a cute girl in a football helmet with her dad, everyone would think it was adorable.

This is truly a sad thread.
How can we have an hope for future generations when some people are so easily freaked out by painted toenails?

Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
Well, I'm that mom. I painted my ds' nails. He sees me do it, he sees me paint my dd nails. He sees his sister pick out cool colors from racks of nail polish and that has to appear to be so much fun to him...not only do you get to pick out cool colors but now you get permission to paint yourself! I did it...he picked blue. I didn't like the way it looked but I did it and I would do it again. It's fun for them. I am embarrassed to say that I didn't like it because I was afraid of what others may think of him. He was 2 and I'm afraid of others labeling him.

ehh...it doesn't bother me, but I am sure if I ever painted DS's nails my DH would throw a fit, only because they have chemicals in them!

Honestly (and I'm sure I'll be in the minority) but I wouldn't paint my son's toenails. HOWEVER I also do NOT think that by this mom painting her son's nails...she is going to cause him to have an idnetity issue. *IF* he were to be confused about his gender identity- painting or not paniting his nails wouldn't matter. To each his own
I agree....

What kind of hope are you hoping for future generation by painting a boys toenails bright pink?
To be honest I dont understand why the new "thing" is for people to be so liberal in letting girls dress like boys like Brangelina's kid and letting boys wear hot pink nail polish? I'm confused. What's wrong with girls being girls and boys being boys?

Tolerance, equality, acceptance, understanding and the like.
Gender stereotypes restrict some people from being who they REALLY are because they feel judged. Sexuality and gender identity do not need to be black and white ( or pink and blue )...

Re: Not sure if this was posted - J Crew ad... Thoughts?
i wouldn't paint my kids nails if it was a boy or girl that young. I don't approve of all these little kids running around with designer items, painted nails, make-up. they're little kids and there is no need for them to play grown ups.
my DS is 7 months. if when he grows up he wants to paint his toenails, i'd have to say no. and i'm not one to want a tough guy son. i just think it's too weird for me. i'm all for gender equality. i will tell my son boys DO cry and it's fine and healthy. but no to nailpolish.
just my opinion.

If my DD and my DS see me painting my toenails, and they both want to do it too, why should I say no to DS and yes to DD? What harm will it to do DS?? He will still be a boy and DD will still be a girl. Why does there need to be such a divide, such harsh stereotypes?? So should I have told my son who just colored in a little mermaid coloring book that it was for girls and handed him the cars coloring book instead? When he sees me put a headband on DD and asks for one too should I tell him no, thats for girls, and make him cry? I let him wear headbands, color in little mermaid coloring books, and if he asks me to paint his toenails, I will do that too. I am sure as he gets older he will be all into "being a boy," and will tell me himself these things are for girls. And if he doesn't - well thats fine too. I

Would there be such a controversy over this ad if it showed a dad and daughter and the daughter dressing up in the dad's suit and tie?

There is nothing wrong with "girls being girls and boys being boys." No one said that, not sure where you are getting that from. What *I* feel is WRONG is prohibiting a boy from expressing himself by wanting, liking and doing what most people view as "girl" things, and vice versa. And it's not a new thing at all. I was a total tomboy and my parents encouraged it. I'm not gay, transgenered, transsexual or confused. I am who I am, and I am so grateful to my parents for letting me be ME.
